- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
I was still on the ground as my gaze glanced down to look at the shattered phone. I couldn’t hold back the cold chuckle that emerged from my throat as I looked up at them with an incredulous look plastered across my face.
"Repay your kindness?" I echoed after him. "Exactly what kindness are you referring to? I would like to know," I snapped back, my voice carrying a sharp edge to it, which only earned me a death glare from my mother who didn’t seem to give a fuck about me.
Her distant eyes flickered down to look at me, her face void of any concern or worry for me. I was certain that she still haboured hatred and anger for me ever since the day she stormed over to Xavier’s house to lash out on me for ’ruining Evelyn’s future’ because I exposed the truth about her being involved in bribing the judges at the competition.
"Aurelia Holt, that’s enough!" Her shrill voice pierced through the air as she glared at me with disdain clearly visible on her face, not a single ounce of warmth was detected in her voice. "Have you not done enough yet?" She yelled loudly as a subtle smirk appeared on Evelyn’s face while she watched quietly with satisfaction.
I gritted my teeth, clenching my fists tightly by my side as I pulled myself up from the ground and stepped forward, closing the gap between us and we are now standing face to face with one another.
"What exactly have I done, Mrs Holt?" I spat out of spite, refusing to call her mother as the memory of the day popped back into my mind. She doesn’t think of me as her daughter anyway.
Within the next second, I watched as her face turned red with anger and her eyes burned with a fiery blaze from within.
"You already put my job at risk once and you are going to do it again? The Lloyd’s were kind enough to allow me to stay, why couldn’t you be more sensible like Evelyn?! Why did you have to go and ruin everything over something so minor!" The words rolled off the tip of her tongue smoothly, it felt almost as if she had always wanted to say those very words and now she finally had the chance to do so. I didn’t understand what was so good about this job anyway.
Evelyn left her father’s side to rush over to my mother’s side, her brows knitted together with concern as she placed her hand on her arm as if to comfort her and calm her down.
"Auntie Jennifer..." she began in a soft voice before she lowered her head, acting shameful and guilty but only I could recognise her act while everyone else in that room had fallen for it. "It’s not Aurelia’s fault, don’t blame her or scold her for it. She must have done it in a moment of anger, I don’t blame her at all..." she continued to say in a meek voice, playing the innocent little girl as always.
Another cold chuckle escaped from my lips as I witnessed the scene unfold before my eyes. I looked up and locked eyes with my mother from a distance.
"You don’t even know what happened and you immediately took her side?" I questioned with a trembling voice as I tried so hard to hide the hurt and anger in my voice. "Do you not want to ask me what happened? Don’t you want to know?" My hoarse voice cracked towards the end of the sentence.
"What’s there to know? I know everything already," my mother sneered with a disdainful scorn as she remained indifferent to the hurt in my voice. "You impulsively smashed Evelyn’s phone out of anger. It was just an honest mistake, can’t you be more understanding and mature?" She blatantly accused me.
Every word that left her lips was piercing through my chest, stabbing at me painfully but I slowly grew numb to it over time. I thought it wouldn’t have affected me by now, but somehow it still did.
"Exactly. And why would she take your side when you are clearly in the wrong here?" James butted in this time, his voice breaking me out of my reverie and snapping me back to reality. "What could my daughter possibly do to deserve this from you?"
I scoffed loudly before I turned to look at Evelyn and my eyes landed on hers, seeing them twinkle with a mixture of amusement and satisfaction.
"What did she do? She would know it best."
A frown appeared on her face as she feigned innocence once again. It was nothing surprising at this point in time.
"What..?" She stammered. "I didn’t do anything, I don’t know what you are talking about," she denied without even batting an eye as she maintained the pitiful look that was still etched onto her face.
A slight smile tugged at the corners of my lips.
"Of course... of course you don’t know," I commented casually, my voice dripping with sarcasm as I kept my gaze on her the entire time. "You have always been great at playing the innocent victim, anyway," I muttered emotionlessly under my breath but it was loud enough for it to be heard by everyone near me.
James stepped forward in anger but my mother was quicker than he was.
"You –!" She raised her arm but before she could hit me, I grabbed onto her arm in the air and tightened my grip around her wrist as I glared at her, emotions running wild in the depths of my dark eyes. "Let go of my arm!"
I released my grip on her but I never once broke eye contact.
"You need to stop with your nonsense and childish behaviour, you are not a kid anymore. How could you say such a thing?!"
"Why not?" I retorted sharply as tension continued to brew in the air between us and injustice grew inside of me with each passing second. "Did I say something wrong? She is always playing the innocent little girl and you would never fail to believe her but I will always be the evil villian in your eyes, right? That’s all I will ever be to you."
She ignored my words and the expression on her face remained cold and distant. A moment of silence lapsed between us before her voice broke it.
"Apologise to Evelyn," she demanded through gritted teeth, working hard to reclaim justice for someone else instead of her own daughter. "Apologise to her now!" She yelled when I didn’t say a word.
"If you apologise to her now, I will let this matter go," James chimed in this time, his voice firm and icy while Evelyn relished in the moment with great satisfaction and accomplishment seeing everyone turn against me. "It’s not that difficult to apologise, right?"
"I’m not apologising. I did nothing wrong," I reiterated, my voice unwavering with a look of certainty that was stretched across my face as I looked between the both of them. "If anything you guys are the ones who owe me an apology." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞
James let out a loud scoff. "We don’t owe you anything. Do you even deserve to receive an apology from my daughter, much less myself? Only in your dreams," he spat, contempt swimming in his dark brown eyes as he stared at me, burning holes through my skull.
"Then none of you deserved an apology from me either!" I fought back. As I turned to leave, James’ loud voice pierced through the air and reached my ears in the next second.
"Guards!" He bellowed, his voice echoing in the living hall and they didn’t waste any second as they appeared almost immediately. "Hold her down!" He commanded as his finger jutted out to point right at me with an intense look in his eyes. His blood boiled with anger and his cheeks were now flushed red and even his breathing was getting heavier.
Their eyes zoomed in on me and they marched over.
"Get away from me!" I screamed, flailing my arms around in desperation. "Let me go! I did nothing wrong!" I pleaded, my own desperate voice echoing in the house while my mother only watched without saying another word.
I struggled and gave it all of my strength as I tried to push the guards away but they had successfully grabbed onto both my arms, holding me down in place and I couldn’t even move a single inch.
"Apologise to Evelyn... now!" He demanded once again as his voice shook with rage and his eyes widened with anger.
I must have been too focused on everything going on right here in the living hall that I didn’t notice the chaos and fight that was going on outside of the mansion.
It was at this moment when a familiar voice boomed loudly behind me.
"Let her go right this instant!"
