- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
A high-pitched shriek pierced through the air within the next second, echoing in my ears. I may be the one lying on the hospital bed, but that doesn’t mean I am an easy target.
"What have you done?!"
I watched as the water slowly trickled down her face and down onto her neck, soaking her blouse and skirt as it dripped onto the floor. Evelyn’s green eyes grew wide open, shock and anger was written all over her face. She was fuming with anger as she glared at me with disdain swirling in the depths of her eyes.
"Oh my god, Evelyn!" My mother gasped loudly in surprise and almost immediately, she rushed towards Evelyn with a frown etched between her brows.
With that look on her face, one would think that I splashed acid on Evelyn’s face or that I did something absolutely horrible. She didn’t waste any time as she quickly took out a piece of tissue and started wiping Evelyn’s face and neck in a hurry with a concerned look that was plastered across her face.
"Are you okay?" She asked, her voice laced with worry as her brows were furrowed together.
"No, I’m not okay!" Evelyn snapped at my mother, her shrill voice reverberated in the room. "I’m completely drenched! And this is my favourite blouse!" She whined.
A smirk tugged at the corners of my lips as I watched them. "Relax, Eveyn," I mocked, only causing her to be more heated in the next second as her cheeks were now flushed red with anger. "It’s just water. Not like I splashed rotten eggs or piss at you. It’s not a big deal. Considering what you said about my child, I already went easy on you, this is barely the tip of the iceberg," I warned through gritted teeth.
"How would you like it if I splashed water at you?!" Evelyn shrieked.
My mother then whipped her head around, staring directly into my eyes as she took a step forward. "Aurelia, are you crazy?! What the hell was that for?" She spat the words out like they were poison in her mouth as her green eyes burned with a fiery blaze. "You have gone too far this time, you have crossed the line!"
"What?" I asked with a raised brow, feigning innocence as I kept my gaze steady and my voice remained unwavering. There was a brief pause as I set the cup back down onto the table beside me. "I told you I will show you what petty is."
"One thing about me is..." I continued. "I don’t lie about what I say... I’m not like you," I snarled as we locked eyes and I knew she knew exactly what I was talking about.
"When are you going to stop bringing that up?!" She questioned, agitation and frustration clearly evident in her tone.
My face darkened visibly as I clenched my jaw tightly. "Never. Not in this life and not in the next life. I don’t know why you hate me so much but I will never stop reminding you of what you did to me and how you ruined my life because you think my fiance wasn’t good enough for you," I hissed, my heart full of vengeance and dissatisfaction. "I’m never letting it go until I take my last breath."
She inhaled deeply, letting her eyes flutter shut for a moment before she opened her eyes once again. "I lied for your own good, Aurelia," she justified. "Why don’t you see it?"
"I don’t think I can ever see it. I can’t see something if it wasn’t real," I retorted, my eyes gleaming with a knowing look. "And I don’t believe you. I think there is more to it, I think you are hiding something from me, are you?" I questioned, the words that left my lips were dripping with accusation as my eyes held my mother’s eyes captive.
My mother was rendered speechless by my sudden accusation as she stared at me with a blank look etched onto her face, yet shock and surprise was swimming in her eyes. She opened her mouth wanting to say something but alas, nothing came out.
Silence stretched between us for what seemed like forever until Evelyn’s voice sliced through the tension that was lingering in the air, hanging between us like a thick blanket.
"Auntie Jennifer, don’t bother reasoning with her," She butted in this time as she glanced over at me with disdain. "She will never understand your good intentions. In her eyes, you are not her mother, you are only the bad guy who robbed her of her marriage with the man she loves. You will forever be evil to her. You heard what she said, didn’t you? She is never going to stop bringing it up," she continued to add fuel to the fire as my mother balled her fists up tightly beside her, her own finger nails digging into her palm.
"You are right, Evelyn. All we did was come here to wish her well, trying our best to make things right and just ask for a tiny favour, but she had to overreact and be so cold and heartless." She let out a loud sigh and her demeanour shifted entirely as she lowered her head. "I think I have failed as a mother. I failed to teach her well."
A cold chuckle left my parted lips upon hearing the words that rolled off the tip of her tongue as she put on a pitiful look on her face.
"This is my fault..." she continued on. "It’s my fault that she wouldn’t help you. It’s my fault that your career is at risk."
Evelyn reached up to hold onto my mother’s shoulders as she looked into her eyes. "Auntie Jennifer, please don’t ever say that. It is not your fault, I don’t blame you."
My mother turned to me this time and our gazes matched. "You can hate me all you want, but Evelyn is innocent, don’t take it out on her. I told you, she is still young. You are going to ruin her future over this small matter? Won’t you feel guilty about it?" She tried guilt tripping me this time but it won’t work anymore.
Another humourless laugh escaped from my lips. "Innocent?" I repeated with an incredulous look plastered across my face. "That’s funny, that’s hilarious, actually," I said, my voice laced with sarcasm.
"You know what?" I questioned. "I think this might be the funniest thing I have heard all year long. And no, I won’t feel guilty at all, not a single bit, to be very honest with you," I said as another chuckle emerged from my throat.
The frown on my mother’s face deepened as she glared at me, clicking her tongue in annoyance. "What’s so funny?!"
"I mean..." I drawled, my voice trailing off. "Unless your definition of innocent is taunting and mocking someone for losing her child while they are grieving, or someone actively trying to break apart a marriage and ruin the person’s life, then yes, I guess you could then say that she is innocent."
"You!" My mother’s eyes widened as rage spread through her body like a wildfire. "But today she came to visit you, didn’t she? It means that she cares," she continued to defend her as though her life depended on it.
I couldn’t hold back the snicker that slipped through the gaps of my fingers. "So is that supposed to magically fix everything and change the fact that she is constantly trying to ruin my life?" I challenged with defiance gleaming in my dark eyes. "The only thing she cares about is getting me to help her so that her career isn’t ruined. And the only thing I care about right now is seeing the two of you get what you deserved."
"Aurelia, are you threatening us? You should know better than to mess with someone like Evelyn. I don’t understand why you are so stubborn all the damn time."
"Oh, trust me, I know," I said as a smirk morphed itself onto my lips and a knowing look flashed past my eyes. "But I’m not afraid and I’m willing to take that risk if it means that you and her will never get a second of peace, that the both of you have to constantly be on high-alert."
"Aurelia, you–!"
Before she could finish her sentence, the door flew open and my eyes landed on Xavier walking into the room with a drink in his hand. "Babe, I got you your favourite..." his voice faltered towards the end of the sentence as he looked over to see my mother and Evelyn standing in front of him.
His smile quickly faded away and his face fell within the next second, replaced by a frown that crept onto his face. His face darkened visibly the next moment as he glared at them with clear disdain and his voice boomed loudly. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
