- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
"Where are you going?" I found myself asking as I watched him stand up from the chair.
He let a smile fall on his lips as he looked down at me to meet my gaze. "I’m going to get you a drink. A nice one that isn’t made in the hospital," he said as he shot me a playful wink, eliciting a soft chuckle from my lips. "I won’t be long, I will be right back."
The corners of my lips twitched upwards into a small smile as he leaned in to give me a quick kiss. "Sure, I’m looking forward to it."
I watched as he walked out of that door and I was now all alone in the hospital ward, surrounded by nothing but the sounds of the beeping machines and constant buzz that lingered in the air.
I was staring out of the window, admiring the scenery outside as my mind was racing with thoughts. It felt like only a couple minutes had passed when I heard the door being pushed open, the sound broke me out of my little reverie.
My eyes lit up in excitement within the next second. "Back already? That’s..." My voice faltered as I whipped my head around and found myself looking into my mother’s eyes. "...quick."
"Hey darling," she greeted with a small smile etched onto her face, the niceness in her tone felt off-putting and foreign to me. "I heard from Blake that you were in the hospital. How are you doing? Feeling better now?" She asked seemingly out of concern but a frown found its way onto my face almost immediately.
"Why are you here?" I questioned, my tone carrying a sharp edge to it as my voice pierced through the air and I narrowed my eyes at her. I sat up straighter this time, my posture stiffened as my features hardened. "I don’t need your fake concern," I spat the words out like they were poison in my mouth.
She continued to maintain that nice demeanour as she let the door shut behind her and slowly approached me, closing the distance that was once between us in a few strides.
"I came to see you, of course," she replied. "I even bought you your favourite cake," she declared and my eyes flickered down to glance at the paper bag she was carrying in her hand.
I watched as she set it down onto the table carefully before looking back up to meet my eyes.
"I don’t want it," I answered coldly. "You can have it." I barely spared the cake another glance.
"But –"
The door flew open once again, cutting her off before she could complete her sentence. I turned my attention to the front door, and much to my surprise, it was Evelyn who greeted me.
"Sorry I’m late, I had to use the washroom. Hope you don’t mind," she said with a smug look plastered across her face as a slight smile tugged at the corners of her lips when she met my eyes.
"Actually, I do mind. What the hell are you doing here?" I sneered with a disdainful scorn. My heart was bursting with contempt as I was reminded of the harsh and cruel words she said to my face in the restaurant not too long ago, mocking me for losing my child.
"Just wanted to see how you are doing."
"Bullshit," I cussed, clenching my jaw. "We are not friends and let’s be real, we hate each other. Don’t even try to convince me otherwise. I don’t want to see you here, leave," I snarled as anger was coursing through my body and my fists were balled up tightly.
"Aurelia!" My mother’s voice boomed loudly with a stern expression that masked her features. "Be nice, why are you being so rude to her? We are just checking on you."
A cold chuckle erupted from my throat. "Yeah, sure..." I mumbled under my breath, the words that left my lips were dripping with sarcasm. "She mocked me for losing my child. Did you know that? How long are the two of you going to put on this act for? Just tell me what you are really here for," I demanded through gritted teeth as I glared at them with an intense look swirling in the depths of my eyes.
Silence stretched between us for what felt like an eternity before my mother broke the silence once again.
"I told you," she began. "We are just here to see you. I know you hate us for what we did to you and I know you despise me for lying to you about your past and your fiance. But can’t we just put the past behind us already? I’m here because I want to make amendments, and so does Evelyn."
"Make amendments with the cake you got me?" I retorted, my voice laced with malice as I kept my gaze steady.
It was at this moment when Evelyn’s eyes flickered down to look at the paper bag sitting on the table in front of me and her green eyes flashed with recognition and joy in a split second. "Oh my god! That’s my favourite peanut cake from that store downtown," she exclaimed with excitement. She turned to face me this time. "I didn’t know you like this too."
Another humourless laughter escaped from my lips as I let out a breath. "I don’t like this. In fact, I’m allergic to peanuts," I revealed bitterly, the words leaving a sour taste in my mouth. Then I looked up, my eyes boring right into my mother’s eyes. "But my mother wouldn’t know that, would she? If she even cared to remember."
"I... I..." she stuttered, struggling to find the right words to say. "I mixed it up. I thought it was your favourite. I must have seen Evelyn eating it much too often," she commented, letting out a laugh to cover up the awkwardness that washed over her.
"Oh come on, Aurelia..." Evelyn drawled, a smug look was plastered across her face as she looked at me. "No need to be so bitter about it. It’s an honest mistake," she said dismissively, brushing me off.
"What makes you think I am bitter about it?" I retorted with a raised brow. "Why would I be bitter when I am not her daughter anymore, right? She said it herself, remember?" I snarled.
My mother’s eyes widened with anger but she inhaled deeply, trying her best to maintain a calm demeanour. "You know I didn’t mean it," she explained, retracting her words from before but it was too late the moment she let those words tumble out of her mouth. "It was just in the heat of the moment, I said it out of anger," she continued to justify her actions.
"Well, there’s no take backs, unfortunately. This isn’t a game where you can just quit and restart it whenever you feel like it," I hissed as my face darkened visibly. "It’s too late now."
"We already came all the way to visit you in the hospital, what more do you want from us?" My mother questioned, annoyance and impatience clearly written all over her face. "We just needed you to put in a good word for Evelyn."
I let out a scoff. "There it is... The true motive of why you showed up here today..." I murmured under my breath as a smirk morphed itself onto my lips. "Why do you need my help to put in a good word for you?"
"The video of our argument at the restaurant went viral... and... let’s just say it’s not a great impression on the art directors," Evelyn confessed.
I couldn’t hold back the snicker that emerged from my parted lips. "So I’m guessing that your daddy’s money didn’t work this time?"
"You!" Evelyn’s sharp voice pierced through the tension that was brewing in the air between us and I watched as her eyes widened with anger and rage spread through her body like a wildfire she couldn’t seem to control. "You know what?! I’m done trying to be nice," she snapped as she finally lost her temper and couldn’t hold it back any longer now.
She leaned in closer towards me, our faces were now merely a few inches apart. "You better do it, or I will make you regret it," she threatened, her voice dropping to a hush whisper as she glared at me. "Don’t fucking test me, I can ruin you if I wanted to."
I remained unmoving as I kept my gaze steady, moving in closer towards her, I murmured next to her ear. "Go ahead, I would love to see you try," I said, as a chuckle left my lips. "Besides...Why should I help you salvage your career when you and my mother tried to ruin mine the other day?" I asked as my eyes were narrowed into thin slits as I glared at them.
"Aurelia, you are unbelievable," my mother commented this time, her eyes filled with disapproval. "Evelyn needs your help this time, can’t you be the bigger person and just help her?"
"No. I don’t want to be the bigger person," I retorted.
"Why do you have to be so petty?"
"Me? Petty?" I repeated with an incredulous plastered across my face. "I will show you what is petty!"
My hand reached for the glass of water sitting on the table and I splashed the water right onto Evelyn’s face.
