- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
Paula’s dark eyes were staring directly into mine, a mixture of doubt and anger swirling in the depths of her eyes by my insistence. She opened her mouth to say something but only a single word left her lips.
"You..." Her voice trailed as she struggled to find the right words to say like there was a lump stuck in her throat. Her eyes were shifting around, as if she was searching for some form of clarity. The anger on her face was prevalent, I knew for a fact that she wanted to shout and yell at me as always, telling me that I was being ridiculous. Yet deep down in the hollow of heart, it was swelling with doubt as she stuttered. "No, this can’t be..." she shook her head.
Silence enveloped us all for what seemed like an eternity.
"You are saying Evelyn was the one who ran over my son?" She asked, disbelief written all over her face as she glanced over at her with a betrayed look. Perhaps she has somehow been swayed by the certainty and seriousness in my tone.
"Yeah," I confirmed immediately. "Why would I lie to you about this? I stand nothing to gain from this lie."
Evelyn was frozen in her spot as her blood chilled and reality began to sink in. But as soon as the words left the tip of my tongue, she quickly moved towards me, extending her arms to roughly shove at me.
"You have every reason to lie!" She shouted in defence, her sharp voice piercing through the tension that hung in the air between us like a thick blanket.
I stumbled a couple steps back but Serena quickly caught me with a frown resting between her brows.
"Hey!" Serena protested on my behalf as she shot Evelyn a deadly glare.
I straightened my posture, unfazed by Evelyn’s little outburst as she was glaring at me with narrowed eyes that were filled with disdain and contempt.
"You are trying to put Paula against me and make me be the bad guy, so you made up all these exaggerated lies and claims!" She yelled loudly, claiming her innocence while the words that left her lips dripping with accusation. "What the hell is wrong with you?!"
A cold chuckle erupted from my throat.
Serena was watching with her lips pressed into a thin line as she tried to maintain a calm demeanour while Paula watched quietly in shock. I kept my gaze steady and an amused smirk tugged at the corners of my lips. I remained unbothered, leaning in closer towards her, our faces were now barely a few inches away from one another.
I arched my brow at her. "Why are you so worked up and agitated?" I questioned intentionally and my eyes gleamed with a knowing look as I watched hers widened with anger.
"You!"
"I can’t make you the bad guy, Evelyn," I paused briefly for a dramatic effect. "You are the bad guy. Admit it, you drove the car down the street, right at us, you have no remorse, do you?" I taunted and watched as anger once again flashed past those dark green eyes within the next second and impulse clouded her judgement.
"I will show you what’s bad!"
The words barely left her lips when she pounced forward and pushed me once again without a single warning. A surprise gasp left Serena’s parted lips and even Paula was shocked to see her act this way, the usual good girl impression was quickly shattered in a couple of seconds.
This time Serena couldn’t grab me in time and I found myself falling backwards when all of sudden I felt my back collided into something behind me, breaking my fall. A soft yelp reached my ears on impact.
Slowly, I turned around and my eyes landed on a pair of familiar dark brown eyes. I sucked in a breath. I felt my heart skip a beat as I stared at the person with a blank expression that masked my features and I remained frozen for a while.
It was Xavier.
It turned out that he had decided to take himself to the park within the hospital grounds despite being wheelchair-bound and witnessed the commotion happening right in front of his ward when he came back. His hands grabbed my shoulders, the warmth of his palms slowly seeping into my skin as I stayed seated on his lap, looking at him in shock as I was left speechless.
"You okay, Aurelia?" He asked, his voice carrying a hint of concern and worry, even in his eyes, there was warmth, warmth that was missing yesterday, warmth that I wanted so badly just the day before.
I had a confused look stretched across my face as my gaze lingered on his face, unable to make sense of the situation.
Just yesterday, he didn’t want anything to do with me, he didn’t even want to lay his eyes on me and he wanted me to leave, but all of a sudden he changed?
I only nodded, mumbling a soft "yeah" under my breath then quickly pulled away and stood up, standing next to Serena who held onto my arm.
He turned to fix his gaze on Evelyn this time and his face darkened visibly in an instant.
"What are you doing here?" He sneered with a disdainful scorn, his tone carrying a sharp edge to it and he clenched his jaw tightly.
I watched as Evelyn immediately put on an innocent look when she realised it was Xavier who was before her eyes. She flashed him a smile like nothing happened. "I heard from your mum that you were in a car accident," she began. "So I brought you some flowers and came down to see if you were okay," she explained, the smile still lingering on her lips as she tried to hand the flowers to him.
His gaze flickered down to look at the bouquet in her hand for less than a second but he didn’t give it a second glance, he could care less about it. A scoff erupted from his throat the next moment.
"Flowers? To see if I’m okay?" He repeated, tossing the words right back at her with an incredulous look etched onto his face. "What are you playing at, Evelyn? What games are you playing?" He questioned, his voice filled with accusation as his eyes held hers captive.
There was a brief silence.
A nervous laughter slipped through the gaps of her fingers, panic evident on her face. "What... What do you mean by that?" She stammered. "I’m not playing any games or doing anything," she insisted, continuing to feign innocence.
"Xavier, what are you trying to say?" Paula pressed this time as the frown that was etched onto her face deepened even further.
He shifted his gaze to fix on his mother’s face, a serious expression masked his features. "I saw her. It was Evelyn who hit me with the car," he revealed, confirming my words from earlier, my words that she refused to believe.
Shock crossed Paula’s face within a split second when realisation finally dawned upon her while Evelyn remained rooted to the ground, surprised that he knew. Their jaws dropped simultaneously, both for very different reasons.
"So it’s true..." Paula murmured softly under her breath as the gears shifted inside her head and she recalled my words. She lifted her head to meet her son’s eyes. "It’s true? Evelyn was the one who did this to you? You are not lying to me?"
"Yes, she’s the one who did this, I remember everything."
His confirmation elicited a loud gasp that left her parted lips as she stumbled back a couple of steps and clutched onto her chest.
She whipped her head around to look at Evelyn, betrayal swimming in the depths of her eyes. "How could you?!" She questioned, hurt evident in her voice. "How could you do this to my son?!" Her voice came out much louder this time, breaking towards the end of the sentence.
"Paula... I..." She stammered nervously, not knowing what to say now that she couldn’t pretend anymore. She reached out to try and hold onto Paula’s arm but she immediately recoiled at her touch.
"I trusted you! I..." Her voice trailed off and she exhaled deeply. "Leave! Just take your flowers and leave! I don’t want to see you! And don’t you dare to come close to him ever again!" She demanded through gritted teeth despite the hurt in her voice.
"I..." Evelyn tried to explain but it was too late, Paula’s mind was made up. Nothing she says or does is going to help, nothing was going to change what she did.
"Leave!" She shouted once again when Evelyn didn’t budge. Her eyes glistened with tears as she stared at Evelyn with wide eyes. "Get ready to have the police knocking at your door again, I’m not letting this go," she warned, her voice heavy with a threat.
The second Evelyn left, silence fell upon us once again and air was still crackling with unspoken tension. Paula turned to me, her gaze softened this time, a hint of regret evident in her eyes.
"I’m sorry," she apologised unexpectedly, catching me by surprise. I raised my brow at her, not knowing what to say for a second as she continued on. "I was wrong, I wrongly accused you and blamed you. I’m sorry."
