- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
She had a bright smile plastered across her face, her eyes gleaming as she held onto a bouquet of flowers, probably the ones with a "Get Well Soon" card attached to it.
How ironic is that?
Memories immediately rushed into my mind, flooding my brain without a single warning. It was back to haunt me. The scene from yesterday popped into my head. I could picture the exact moment of her tearing down the streets in the car, driving straight at us and her wide eyes filled with so much hate and disdain glaring right into mine. I could even hear her cackles echoing at the back of my mind somehow, I was going crazy.
’Aurelia," I heard my name left Serena’s lips, her soft voice snapping me right back to reality. "Isn’t that..." Her voice trailed off, carrying a hint of recognition. She stared ahead with a frown etched between her brows as realisation dawned upon her.
The words barely left the tip of her tongue when I saw the door swing open. It was Paula who had walked out, coming to the door to greet her. The corners of her lips were also curved upwards into a grin, there was no doubt that she was happy to see her.
I watched as she placed her hand to rest on Evelyn’s shoulder as they locked eyes, talking to one another with smiles still lingering on their lips as they laughed without a care in the world. Before I could even react or register the situation, Serena had already wrapped her fingers around my wrist, pulling me straight towards them.
"What are you doing here?" Serena snapped as a frown crept onto her face, resting between her brows.
Evelyn and Paula immediately whipped their heads around at the voice and their eyes darted between Serena and I, a look of displeasure immediately crossed their faces in a split second.
Evelyn’s perfectly groomed brows were quickly furrowed into a deep frown as she stared at us. Her eyes fixated on Serena this time and she sneered with a disdainful scorn, looking at her with pure disgust as recognition flashed past her dark green eyes.
"Oh... It’s you."
Paula turned to look at Evelyn with a confused expression that masked her features. "Who is she?"
"She’s the woman who tried to ruin my art studio, they are friends, of course," she explained, her words laced with venom as she spoke.
A scoff emerged from Paula’s parted lips as she seemed to recall what Evelyn was saying. She then turned to fix her gaze on Serena this time, a frown evident on her face. "Who the hell are you to question Evelyn and I? And what are you doing here with this woman? She is not welcomed here." Her eyes flickered over to glance at me as she spat the words out like they were poison in her mouth.
Serena let out a loud scoff as the frown etched on her face deepened to form creases on her forehead.
"What do you mean by this woman?" She questioned as she leaned in closer towards her, their faces now merely inches apart from one another. "She has a name and she is also Xavier’s wife, mind you," she snapped back at her snarkily, unfazed by the crudeness in Paula’s voice.
Silence stretched between all of us for a brief moment before my voice broke the silence. I managed to recover from earlier and I told myself I cannot be weak in front of them ever again, I’m seeing Xavier today whether he or they like it or not. I’m not letting the woman who tried to kill me and almost killed my husband into the ward. It’s not happening as long as I am here.
"Exactly. I’m here to see my husband," I announced, my tone carrying finality and my face wore a look of certainty. "So if you don’t mind, please move out of the way," I demanded through gritted teeth as Serena watched me with a proud smile etched onto her face, like she was proud of me for standing up for myself and not being the same girl crying and refusing to do anything back in the office.
A mocking chuckle emerged from Paula’s lips as soon as the words left my mouth. Without hesitation, she immediately positioned herself to block the door with her body, not allowing me to walk through or enter. She looked at me, smugness radiating from every inch of her skin as a slight smirk morphed itself onto her lips.
She arched her brow at me as we locked eyes. "Did you not get it? Xavier already said he doesn’t want to see you," she reminded me crudely, her sharp words were meant to stab at my heart. "So just leave, don’t make me get the guards to drag you out," she hissed as her eyes were narrowed into thin slits, her voice heavy with a threat.
"I’m not leaving. I’m not leaving here until I get to talk to him," I insisted, my voice remaining unwavering as I kept my gaze steady and the air crackled with unspoken tension.
Beside her, Evelyn had a smug look that was stretched across her face. Her gaze glanced down to look at my empty hands and a soft chuckle left her parted lips with a self-righteous look.
She stepped forward as she straightened her posture. "Paula already said that Xavier doesn’t want to see you, he wants nothing to do with you," she snarled, chiming in to support Paula as expected.
"Besides..." She drawled as if she was savouring each syllable. "You came to see your husband empty-handed?" She questioned, the words that left her lips were dripping with mockery and arrogance.
"Don’t you think –"
I interrupted her, cutting her off before she could even finish her sentence. I arched my brow at her as I never once tore my gaze away from hers.
"You are just his ex. I am his wife, who are you to question me on what I do?" I retorted without a second thought as I stared at her with a cold expression. She only looked at me blankly as she remained dumbfounded. "Did you think some flowers are going to change the fact that you were the one who almost killed him?"
I watched with satisfaction as her eyes widened instantly with a mixture of fear and horror swirling in the depths of her eyes. Panic engulfed her entirely within a split second. I could see the way her smile dropped and the smirk was quickly wiped off her face as her heart sank to the pit of her stomach.
She opened her mouth as if she wanted to say something but no words came out, like there was a lump stuck in her throat.
Instead, Paula was the one who said something, her sharp voice piercing through the tension that was lingering in the air between us.
There was a puzzled look that was plastered across her face as she tilted her head slightly so that her eyes met Evelyn’s. A tiny frown was resting between her brows as she struggled to register the words that left my mouth.
"Evelyn, what is she talking about?"
"I... I... don’t know..." She stuttered, struggling to find the right words to say as her eyes darted around anxiously and her heart raced inside her chest. "I don’t know," she continued to feign innocence, acting as if she didn’t know what I meant.
A cold chuckle left my lips as I stepped forward, closing the gap between us. "I think you know it very well, Evelyn, don’t you?" I taunted her with a wicked smile lingering on my lips. "Did your daddy take pity on you and bailed your ass out of jail? You sure are lucky, aren’t you?"
"Evelyn, what is she –"
"Shut up!" She burst out yelling as her high-pitched voice rang in my ears. "You don’t know what you are talking about!" She shouted again as her voice shook with anger.
"I know what I saw and I saw you behind those wheels, you were the one driving down the street, heading right for Xavier and I!"
The colour drained from Evelyn’s face almost immediately. But before she could even utter a single word, Paula was already glaring at me with wide eyes full of disdain as rage spread through her body like a wildfire she couldn’t seem to control.
"Nonsense!" She yelled. "How dare you accuse Evelyn of trying to kill my son?!" She snarled as her blood boiled with anger and rage. I watched as she raised her arm with the full intention to hit me across my face once again.
"Aurelia, watch out!" Serena warned. I didn’t even flinch. I quickly reached out to grab Paula by her arm, holding her in a tight grasp as my eyes bored into hers.
I let out a breath. "No, you are wrong," I began. "I wasn’t accusing her at all, I was simply telling you the truth." 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
I let go of her hand as soon as the words left my mouth and her arm fell back to her side as she stared at me blankly for a while, not knowing what to say.
I continued.
"Are you really going to let her in after knowing that she was the one who landed your son in the hospital?"
