"That was what we were talking about," I continued as I let out the breath I had been holding the entire time. "She showed me our maternity test results and it was a 99.99% match. I am her daughter, Xavier," I revealed, as my eyes were running wild with emotions. I pulled the maternity test results out from my bag and placed it in his hands.

His eyes flickered down to look at the piece of paper in his hands, staring at it for a long time before he finally lifted his head and we locked eyes.

He was now looking at me, shock swimming in his dark brown eyes and disbelief was written all over his face. Silence settled among us and the air continued to crackle with unspoken tension until he broke the silence.

"...What?" He muttered softly under his breath. He looked at me before he turned to look at Natalie, his eyes darting between the two of us and finally stayed on mine. "You are her daughter?" He repeated with an incredulous look plastered across his face.

I nodded without saying a single word.

"But how..." His voice trailed off. "How is this po–"

I interrupted, cutting him off before he could finish the sentence. "It was Evelyn. She found out about what we were doing so she tampered with the results which was why our test results..."

"...Said that you and Jennifer were a 99.99% match," he muttered more to himself as realisation finally dawned upon him and he quickly understood what was going on. "She didn’t want you to find out the truth..." he mumbled under his breath and I could see the gears in his head shifting as his mind buzzed with thoughts and questions.

"I know this comes as a shock to both of you..." she began as she chimed in, breaking the silence that stretched between us once again. "And it is also shocking to me," she admitted.

She turned to face me this time and her dark brown eyes bored into mine as she exhaled deeply. "I know you need time to process this, I will give you time but call me when you are ready to talk, okay?" She asked in a soft and gentle tone. The warmth of her palm seeped into my skin as she held onto my forearm with a slight smile etched onto her face and I returned the smile as I gave her a light nod.

I watched as she grabbed the maternity test results from Xavier and shoved them back into her purse. "I will just keep this with me for now," she declared. She looked up to meet Xavier’s eyes this time. There was a moment of hesitation before she let the words roll off the tip of her tongue. "Take care of my daughter for me, okay?"

Third Person POV

"Evelyn, I brought you some soup," Jennifer announced as the corners of her lips were curled upwards into a smile. She carefully walked over, holding the bowl of piping hot soup in her hands before setting it down on the table beside her.

"I don’t want it," Evelyn said coldly, barely sparing her or the bowl of soup another glance as she only stared out of the window with her lips pressed into a thin line. She looked as though she was in deep thoughts, her mind racing with thoughts.

Jennifer’s eyes widened slightly at the harshness of her words that seemed to pierce through her chest and into her heart like daggers. Hurt flashed past her eyes for a fleeting moment but she quickly let a smile graced her lips as she leaned in closer towards her.

"Why not?" She asked, the smile still lingering on her lips. She twisted her body slightly to pick up the bowl of soup from the table before turning back to face her. "I spent hours making this. This is good for you, you need something to nourish your body."

Without a single warning, she turned around and pushed the bowl of soup out of Jennifer’s hands. "I said I don’t want it!" Evelyn shrieked, her high-pitched voice pierced through the tension that was brewing in the air between them.

A yelp escaped from Jennifer’s parted lips as the hot soup scalded her hands and feet. The bowl hit the ground and shattered upon impact, pieces of the broken ceramic were scattered across the ground and the soup was splashed all over.

Anger crossed Jennifer’s face for a split second but she quickly took in a deep breath and maintained her calm demeanour all for the sake of her. Without saying another word, she was about to turn around to go grab the mop and broom when Evelyn’s voice reached her ears.

"Can you stop being so nice to me?" She said, her voice carrying a slight edge to it. "Why are you so nice to me all the time? Why do you treat me so well?" She questioned crudely as her voice trembled slightly and emotions ran wild in her dark green eyes, even though she knew exactly why.

Slowly, Jennifer turned back around to face her, her eyes glistening with tears that were threatening to spill at any second. She didn’t care about the pain on her hands and feet, she didn’t care that it might cause blisters. She was only looking at Evelyn, her eyes boring right into hers with an intense look.

"Why can’t I be nice to you? Is it wrong to care about you? I have seen you grow up as a baby and now that I know that you are diagnosed with cancer, it breaks my heart," she admitted as her voice cracked towards the end of the sentence.

A soft chuckle emerged from Evelyn’s throat.

"You are just a maid here at the Lloyd’s mansion," she reminded her harshly. "Aurelia is your daughter, maybe you should show her more care and concern! Not me!" She said pointedly as her heart drummed in her chest.

Impulse clouded Jennifer’s judgement and before she could stop herself, it was too late. She burst out yelling. "Aurelia is not my daughter, you are!"

It was at this moment when they heard a glass shattered upon hitting the ground. Immediately, they whipped their heads around to find themselves looking at one of the other maids working here. The glass of water she had been holding in her hands slipped from her grip and fell onto the floor when she heard the words that left Jennifer’s mouth.

Both Jennifer and Evelyn felt their hearts sink to the pit of their stomach and a flustered look was plastered across their faces when they realised the situation they were stuck in.

"I... I..." The woman stuttered nervously as her eyes darted around the room anxiously and her heart was pounding loudly against her chest. "I... didn’t hear anything. I’m sorry," she apologised.

"I will clean this up right now," she said and spun on her heels to leave when Evelyn called out to her and she stopped in her tracks.

"Jane," her name left Evelyn’s lips in a serious tone. "You will not tell a living soul about what you hear today, okay?" She demanded through gritted teeth.

Jane gulped audibly as she nodded. "Yes, of course."

"Good. Trust me..." Evelyn’s voice trailed off. "You don’t want to know what will happen if the word got out," she warned, her voice heavy with a threat.

"No, yeah don’t worry, I won’t say anything!" Jane said in a hurry before she turned to leave, leaving just the two of them alone again.

An uncomfortable silence enveloped them both and Evelyn turned to look at Jennifer, her voice breaking the silence.

"So you knew? You knew all along that I am your real daughter."

"I...I..." Jennifer stuttered as if there was a lump stuck in her throat as she struggled to find the right words to say. "Why are you so... calm? Are you not surprised?"

"I knew you were my biological mother. I got it checked a while ago," Evelyn revealed, her voice remained cold and icy as she spoke.

"And you didn’t mention a word about it? Don’t you want to know what happened?"

"I’m not interested. Why would I?" Evelyn asked, her voice carrying a sharp edge to it. "I love being the daughter of the Lloyd family and I’m not going to let you ruin it," she sneered with a disdainful scorn.

Jennifer let out a breath. "Who said I was going to... I wasn’t going to ruin anything. I swapped the two of you when you were babies, to give you a better life."

Evelyn leaned in closer, their faces now merely inches apart from one another. "Then let me continue living this life. Stop getting too close to me or they are going to start suspecting something, and it’s going to be all your fault!" She said, spitting the words out like they were poison in her mouth.

"Nobody is going to –"

Evelyn cut her off before she could even finish her sentence. "Aurelia is already suspicious. Did you know she hired a PI to investigate and if it wasn’t for me tampering with the results, she would have found out the truth!" She yelled. "So just stay away from me, okay?"
