Xavier was the one who kicked down the hotel door without a second thought. There he was, standing by the door as his dark eyes were burning with a fiery blaze and he had his fists clenched tightly beside his body.

"I said get away from her!" His voice boomed loudly, catching the attention of the couple as both Stella and Aaron whipped their heads around in an instant, looking at him with shock evident on their faces, it was almost as if they had not expected him to show up there.

It was also at this moment when Aaron loosened his grip on my throat as they locked eyes from a distance. I could finally breathe again, inhaling one deep breath as my sight slowly came back to me although I remained light-headed.

"Xavier..." His name left my lips in a voice that was barely above a whisper, and I was certain that my face was ghastly white.

Before I knew it, Xavier was marching over, covering the distance between us in no more than a couple of steps. With his fist still tightly clenched, he swung down on the man with zero hesitation. In the quietness of the room, I could practically hear the sound of his jaw cracking as his fist landed squarely at his jaw.

A loud yelp emerged from the man’s throat while a gasp left Stella’s lips as she watched on, her hands flying up to cover her mouth as she watched in shock while the situation unfolded before her eyes.

But before Aaron could even react or even try to fight back, Xavier had delivered another blow right into his stomach, causing him to tumble over and fall to the ground as he grimaced in pain, clutching onto his tummy and curling up into a fetus position.

"Aaron!" Stella called out, her voice laced with worry and concern as her eyes were wide with horror.

Impulse and rage continued to cloud his judgement as anger spread through his body like a wildfire he couldn’t seem to control. He didn’t stop there, all sense of rationality and control were thrown right out of the window at that point in time. Even as Aaron was lying on the ground defenseless with his arms up to shield himself, I watched with wide eyes as Xavier continued to kick and punch at him until I could see the blood oozing out of his fresh wound.

"Xavier!" I yelled out loud this time but he barely turned around to spare me another glance as his eyes were fixated on Aaron. "Xavier, stop! You are going to kill him!" My words sliced through the tension that was thick in the air and he finally stopped.

He turned around to look at me, anger and rage were still swirling in the depths of his dark eyes as his heart raced inside his chest. My eyes flickered down to glance at his bloodied knuckles and tears started to glisten at the brim of my eyes. I could barely recognise him, I have never seen him look like this before.

Behind him, Aaron was still on the ground, cowering against the corner of the wall as he inched away from Xavier with an expression of fear plastered across his face. Stella rushed over to Aaron’s side to check on him, concern evident on her face as she looked at him, speechless.

Everything felt as though it was in slow motion. I was just about to take a step forward towards him when the police came running through the door within the next second. The next thing I knew was that I was watching as the police put Xavier in handcuffs and they took him away while Aaron was sent to the hospital to treat his wounds and injuries.

"Oh my god..."

I found myself sitting at one of those cold hard plastic chairs at the police station as I waited for Xavier, tapping my feet against the ground anxiously as my eyes wandered around the place. The police were still taking his statement in the interrogation room while I sat alone outside with my own thoughts buzzing inside my head. I picked up my phone to dial Serena’s number but I was thrown straight to voicemail no matter how many times I called.

This time, the phone screen lit up, it was a text from her.

"I’m sorry for what I did, but I needed to do it. Don’t worry about me and the kids, we are safe now."

I tried to call her back but I realised I was blocked. It was at this moment when the noise from outside snapped me back to reality. I looked up from my phone to see Xavier’s parents came rushing in through the front door.

They barely spared me another glance, running right past me as though I was invisible. Their eyes were darting around anxiously as they scanned the area, looking for someone they could speak to.

"Where’s my son? Where the hell is my son?!" Paula yelled. "Release him now!" She demanded through gritted teeth as she glared at the officers, making a fuss the entire time.

One of the officers stood up and started walking towards them. "Ma’am, please take a seat and I am going to need you to calm down," she said, gesturing towards the chair behind her.

"Don’t tell my wife to calm down when you arrest our son for no good reason. Do you know who we are?" Charles butted in, sneering with a disdainful scorn. He jutted out his finger and pointed at all the officers present in the room as his eyes were narrowed into thin slits. "I’m going to sue all of your asses if you don’t let my son out right this second."

"Sir, ma’am, we have the right to detain and question your son. Xavier Wilder, am I right? He is arrested for assault. Please just take a seat in the meantime, he will be out soon."

It was at this moment when Paula snapped her head around and she finally noticed me sitting there. As soon as her eyes met mine, she let out a loud scoff and her eyes were filled with clear contempt and disdain for me. She sauntered over towards me, closing the gap between us as she looked down at me, her body looming above me.

"Of course, it’s you," she snarled, spitting the words out like they were poison in her mouth. "You are the reason my son is in jail right now?!" She screamed, the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation as she glared at me like she wanted me dead.

I looked up at her, keeping my gaze steady as I spoke. "I didn’t do anything." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

A cold chuckle escaped from her parted lips this time. "Didn’t do anything?" she repeated, tossing my words right back at me with an incredulous look etched onto my face. "Then how come my son is in jail right now?"

"He is not in jail," I answered through gritted teeth, still shaken from what happened earlier. I sucked in a deep breath. "The police are just questioning him and taking his statement, that’s all."

"That’s all?! Did you think that this is some kind of joke?" She spat, her eyes burning with a fiery blaze. Without a single warning, she raised her arm and slapped me across the face as I stared at her with wide eyes. "How dare you talk back to me at a time like this? I have always known that you are a bad influence on Xavier, leading him astray. You are the reason why he ended up here, you good for nothing slut!"

As soon as the last word left the tip of her tongue, my gaze hardened and I stared right into her eyes. Without saying another word, I stood up and slapped her right back without a second thought.

"Don’t call me a slut," I warned as I clenched my jaw tightly while she looked at me with shock written all over her face, stuttering as she was unable to get the words out of her throat. Beside her, I watched as anger and rage appeared on Charles’ face as he glared at me for having the audacity to slap his wife, my mother-in-law, like it was nothing. "I’m not going to let you speak to me like this."

"You–!" Charles raised his hand, but the word barely left his lips when a familiar voice interrupted, his deep voice piercing through the tension that was lingering in the air between us.

"What do you think you are doing?!"

I whipped my head around and my eyes landed on Xavier who was standing not too far away from us. He rushed over to my side immediately, putting himself between his father and myself.

"Can someone tell me what the hell is going on here?" He demanded through gritted teeth. He kept his gaze steady as his dark eyes bored right into his father’s. He questioned his father once more, his voice carrying a sharp edge to it. "Were you going to slap her?"
