As soon as the words left my lips, Serena whipped her head around to look at me as shock flashed past her eyes for a fleeting moment.

"What?" She muttered under her breath, her voice laced with a hint of confusion as her brows were knitted together. "What are you –"

Julia and the rest of them started laughing in a condescending manner before I could even say another word, also interrupting Serena. Her eyes flickered over to glance at Serena before she turned back to meet my eyes, raising an eyebrow at me with an incredulous look plastered across her face.

"Her? Quit this job?" She mocked as a snicker emerged from her throat. "What is a stay-at-home-mother going to do? No one else is going to hire her, she should be thankful that we even let her have a job here," she snarled with a disdainful scorn.

A cold chuckle escaped from my parted lips as I kept my gaze steady. "For a sales assistant, you sure talk like you are the store manager," I retorted as my features hardened. "Aren’t you scared that you will lose your job for acting like that?" I asked through gritted teeth.

She scoffed loudly with an arrogant look etched onto her face, smugness radiating from every inch of her skin. She folded her arms over her chest and took a step towards me, closing the gap between us.

"Scared? Why would I be? I may not be the store manager but my boyfriend is," she announced proudly as her eyes gleamed with a knowing look. "You couldn’t try to fire me even if you wanted to. Serena, on the other hand...I could get him to fire her if I wanted to," she boasted.

"You know..." she drawled, her voice trailing off she savoured every syllable of the words that left her mouth. "She should thank me for being so generous and understanding. If she had been in some other store, she might have already been fired by now," she sneered as a snicker escaped from the gaps between her fingers.

Another chuckle left my lips again. I raised my brow at her, unfazed by her taunting and mockery. "Fire her?" I repeated, tossing the words right back at her. "There’s no need to. I told you that she is quitting. No need for your generosity and understanding at all." I reiterated as my voice remained unwavering and a look of certainty was stretched across my face.

I turned to meet Serena’s eyes, a mixture of worry and concern swirling in the depths of her eyes. I reached up to place my hand on her shoulder and the corners of my lips curled upwards into a reassuring smile.

"Don’t worry. I will help you get a better job..." I assured her before my eyes glanced over to look at them. "So, you don’t have to deal with people like them," I spat the word out like they were poison in my mouth.

I watched as Julia’s eyes grew wide, burning with a fiery blaze as she clenched her jaw tightly. She stared at me as her eyes narrowed into thin slits. "What do you mean by people like us? What are you trying to say?!" She hissed, her tone carrying a sharp tone to it. "Who do you think you are? You think you could just get her a job so easily? What a joke!" She cackled.

I let out a breath as I stepped closer towards her, forcing her to take a step back to create a small distance between us. I looked right into her eyes as I let the words roll off the tip of my tongue.

"A joke?" I asked and I couldn’t hold back the snicker that left my lips. "I’m the vice president of a company, why can’t I get her a job?" I retorted as I glared into her eyes.

A surprise expression masked Serena’s features as she looked at me, shocked at the sudden revelation. Even Julia looked surprised as her eyes widened slightly but it was quickly replaced with a nonchalant expression as she laughed right in my face.

"You? The vice president of the company? How funny. Do you expect us to believe it?" She mocked as she gestured to the people around her. "Maybe you slept your way up the corporate ladder... that I would believe," she sneered as her eyes filled with disdain.

From the corner of my eyes, Xavier who had been watching quietly behind us the entire time, his face darkened visibly and he clenched his fists tightly beside him as soon as he heard the woman hurling insults at me. That’s when it crossed the line.

He stepped forward, his body hovering above her head, an intimidating look crossed his face.

"What did you just say about my wife?" He asked, his deep voice boomed loudly as he stared at her, causing her to gulp inaudibly as she stepped back.

"I...I..." she stammered as though there was a lump stuck in her throat and she couldn’t get her words out. In a split second, her strong and smug demeanour collapsed as fear flashed past her eyes for a brief second. "I was just... saying."

But he didn’t seem to care about the fear swimming in the woman’s eyes.

"Don’t talk shit about my wife and expect zero consequences," he warned, his voice heavy with a threat as he kept his eyes fixed on her. "You can pack up your things and get ready to leave."

There was a brief moment of silence that stretched between us before he spoke up again. "Actually, all of you. You can take your things, and leave. You are all getting fired," he announced in a cold voice.

"What?!" They echoed in shock. "You can’t fire us!" They shouted, their voices carrying a hint of desperation and surprise.

"You may be the president of a company but that doesn’t mean that you can just fire us. You don’t have the right or power to do so!" Julia fought back, her eyes glistening with a mixture of defiance and anger.

A low chuckle erupted from his throat and I watched as a smirk tugged at the corners of his lips. He leaned forward and arched a brow at them.

"Are you sure about that?"
