Third Person POV

The words that left his lips were like a tight slap to the face, rudely slapping her back to the present as the pain of the new found reality began to seep into their world without a single warning.

Their eyes went wide in an instant and they let out the breath they had been holding, obviously filled with despair and sorrow. Evelyn’s heart sank to the pit of her stomach within the next second, along with her parents. They felt as though the world had stopped spinning and time had come to a standstill. They simply couldn’t believe their ears, disbelief, shock and denial written all over their faces.

"What..." Evelyn muttered softly under her breath, her voice was barely above a whisper and she appeared to be in a daze, staring blankly at her wringing hands. "I have cancer?" She whispered to herself as tears filled up the brim of her eyes, threatening to fall any second now. Everything had just changed in a split second and she was clearly unable to believe the words that had just left her lips.

Seeing her daughter’s trembling lips and tears glistening in her eyes, the image pierced right through Natalie’s heart like it was a sharp dagger twisting through her chest and stabbing at her heart. A sour feeling shot up her nose and a single teardrop rolled down her cheek. "Oh, my baby..." She cooed as she wrapped her arms around Evelyn to comfort her as they cried together.

James on the other hand, had his head lowered as he stared at the ground with a blank expression that masked his features. "Kelvin, please tell me this is not true..." he mumbled under his breath, his voice trembling as he spoke. He then lifted his chin to look up this time, his gaze fixated on his friend. "Tell me my daughter is not diagnosed with cancer!" He yelled out loud, his voice cracking towards the end of the sentence.

Kelvin reached up to place his hand on James’ shoulder trying to calm him down.

"James... I –" He started but was quickly cut off as James pushed his hand off of him, clearly agitated and anxiety was pumping through every single vein inside of his body.

"Eve is perfectly fine and healthy!" His voice boomed loudly, echoing in the large room. "And no one in our family has a history of breast cancer. How could she be diagnosed with cancer?! There must be some kind of mistake!" He denied the cold hard truth that was thrown right at him.

"You need to do a retest. I don’t believe this. It’s wrong!" He continued to scream and shout, absolutely losing his mind as his heart drummed in his chest.

James isn’t someone who would cry, he wouldn’t be caught dead even having a single teardrop falling down his cheek, he thought that he needed to maintain that tough and cold demeanour. Without saying another word, he rushed out of the ward to be alone. He stood at a corner, hidden away from everyone else as he held back the tears swimming in his eyes. It didn’t take too long before he slid down the wall and squatted down with his shoulders slouched over as he broke down and sobbed quietly.

The room felt eerily silent as soon as the door slammed shut.

Kelvin turned to face Natalie and Evelyn who were still embraced in a hug as the nurse watched quietly behind him. He cleared his throat inaudibly and took in a deep breath.

"Natalie, Evelyn," he called out to them and continued even when they didn’t look up. "I know this sounds scary, but the good news is, stage 2 breast cancer is very highly curable. We just have to start treatment early and Evelyn can be completely cured with a very low chance of recurrence," he explained.

"We will make sure to give her the best treatment and doctors and nurses available, as always," he assured, in hopes that his words could offer some kind of solace and comfort to the mother-daughter duo. He carefully walked over to the edge of the bed and rested his hand on their shoulders. "Don’t worry, I will make sure Evelyn gets a full recovery."

Natalie lifted her head this time to look up and they locked eyes. "You... promise?"

The corners of his lips twitched upwards into a slight smile.

"I promise."

First Person POV

"That’s a pretty deep cut," the doctor remarked with a tiny frown resting between his brows. "What happened?"

"It’s nothing, just an accident," I quickly said, brushing off his comment. My gaze remained fixed on my now bandaged hand as I continued to stare at it absentmindedly, my mind still buzzing with thoughts.

Xavier stood next to me with a concerned expression that masked his features. He had one hand holding onto my shoulder, giving me a slight squeeze as if for comfort and reassurance. "Doctor, when will her injury be fully recovered?" He asked, his deep voice carried a slight hint of worry as he spoke.

"It’s hard to tell. It could be weeks or even months," the doctor began, then I watched as his gaze flickered down to look at my palm before he looked back up to meet Xavier’s eyes. "Judging by the cut on her hand, I would say at least about a month or so."

I let out a breath as I sank into the chair with a defeated look plastered across my face. "So I won’t be able to paint until I’m healed?" I questioned as a wave of deja vu washed over me in an instant, bringing me right back to the time when I injured my hand right before the art competition.

"Yes, try to avoid it if you can. At least until you are at least about 85% healed," the doctor confirmed and I could only nod in response, not uttering a single word.

But the moment we got outside, I plopped myself down onto one of the chairs that lined the walls as silence settled among us.

Xavier got down to my eye level and interlaced his fingers with mine as he let a smile grace his lips. "Aurelia, babe. This little injury isn’t going to hold you back, and you know that," he encouraged, his eyes holding mine captive. "You did the last time, you can do it again this time."

I managed to crack a smile despite the pang of sadness that was weighing me down earlier. I gave him a light nod. "Yeah, you are right," I muttered softly under my breath as a surge of motivation and hope coursed through my body in a split second. "I can do it."

The smile etched onto his face widened as he reached up to gently cup my face in his hand.

"That’s my girl."

A familiar high-pitched voice pierced through the air and reached my ears, shattering the happy moment that we shared.

I snapped my head around to find myself looking right into a pair of familiar green eyes, those eyes were wide open, anger swirling in the depths of her eyes.

"Mum...?"
