- Chapter 2: I am what?
- Chapter 1: Our Second Anniversary
Whenever I find myself watching a movie or drama, I never understand why the male lead pushes the female lead away instead of running away together when they see a car zooming down the street, heading straight for them.
But now I finally understood why. With only a split second to make a decision, he decided to push me away to try and save my life instead of his.
Tears were gleaming in my dark brown eyes as I looked at him lying on the ground with his eyes closed shut and he was covered in bright red blood.
I choked on my tears, disbelief written all over my face and I was in a daze, unable to comprehend the scene I had just witnessed. I didn’t even notice Evelyn driving off, skidding down the street as my eyes remained fixated on Xavier as I breathed heavily. I was unable to mutter a single word for the longest time, frozen in shock even though I knew I was supposed to call for help but the word was stuck in my throat.
Everything around me was a blur as people on the streets began to gather around us, watching on like it was some kind of spectacle. The curious and worried eyes were darting around the place as they looked at us.
"Hi, we need an ambulance here at..." The unfamiliar voice faded into the background, blended with the murmurs and whispers that filled the heavy air.
Tears were streaming down my face at this point, blurring my vision. I slowly crawled towards him, my palms and knees scraping across the rough road. I didn’t care about the pain that was pulsing through my veins and burning on my palms and knees, all I cared about was him.
"Xa...vier..." His name left my parted lips in a soft voice, my voice was barely above a whisper as I stuttered like there was a lump stuck in my throat. I extended my bruised arm, reaching out to hold onto his bloodied palm. "Oh god..." I muttered under my breath as I clung onto his hand, refusing to let go.
"Stay... with me, don’t leave me. You have... to be okay..." I continued to mumble in between sobs as I broke down in front of all the strangers that had crowded around us. "Promise me... you will be okay."
***
In a haze, I somehow found myself sitting outside on one of those cold hard plastic chairs that lined the corridors of the hospital. My wounds were bandaged properly and I was told that I only sustained superficial cuts, nothing too serious.
Thoughts were swirling at the back of mind, occupying every inch of my brain as a concerned expression masked my features. I lowered my head and I was staring at my wringing hands as my heart drummed in my chest. The operation theatre light was light flashing a bright red, signalling that an operation was ongoing inside.
Guilt and worry was eating away at me as the seconds crawled by.
It was at this moment when the sound of hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor and soon, a familiar voice reached my ears.
"Aurelia!" The person shouted loudly, the voice filled with disdain, anger and contempt all at once.
I lifted my head and my eyes landed on his parents, Charles and Paula. Her eyes were filled with rage and anger as she marched towards me with a deep frown etched between her brows. We locked eyes and she slapped me across my cheek before I could even react.
Pain shot through my body as I stared at her with a blank look plastered across my face.
"This is all your fault!" She screamed, her high-pitched voice piercing through the air as the words that left her lips were dripping with accusation. "If it wasn’t for you then he wouldn’t end up like this!"
I watched as Charles held her back, wrapping his arms around her torso.
"Why couldn’t you be the one lying on the operation table instead?!" She shrieked, her eyes filled with anger and disdain. She turned to meet her husband’s eyes that were running wild with emotions, and all of a sudden, her gaze softened and tears began to glisten in her eyes. "Why couldn’t she be the one in there? Why has it got to be my son?" Her voice cracked towards the end of her sentence as her knees buckled beneath her but Charles held her up.
His gaze dragged over to mine, the frown that was already etched onto his face deepened this time. "Look at what you have done to her," he sneered with a disdainful scorn as his eyes were narrowed into thin slits. "First you put my son in the hospital, now are you also trying to land my wife in the hospital too?!" He questioned sarcastically as his blood boiled with anger and he clenched his jaws tightly.
I was in too much pain, physically but mostly in my heart. I was too worried and concerned about Xavier that I simply didn’t have the energy to fight or talk back to them. But I broke this time, the words bursting out of my lips.
"Enough!" My voice boomed loudly, shaking slightly as it reverberated in the corridors. My eyes met their intense gaze and I rose from my seat. "I know you two don’t like me because of what happened, and I’m not going to try and convince you to like me or anything like that.
I paused briefly as I kept my gaze steady. "But instead of blaming me for what happened, why can’t we just sit out here quietly while we wait for Xavier to come out of the operating room?" I suggested as hot tears stung my eyes. "Not for me, just for his sake."
They were left speechless as they simply stared at me with wide eyes, struggling to find the right words to say as though there was a lump stuck in their throats. Silence stretched between us for what felt like an eternity as I plopped back down onto the cold, hard plastic chair and buried my face in my hands, while I sat slouched over, clearly distraught.
"You..." She muttered under her breath, taken aback by my response. Her eyes flickered down to glance at my bandaged arm and she didn’t say another word. She only pulled her husband and they sat down next to me, leaving one chair in between us.
The sound of the doors being pushed open reached my ears, breaking me out of my little reverie as the thoughts that were once buzzing in my head became silent for a second, I lifted my head and quickly wiped the tears off my face as hope reignited in my eyes.
I dashed towards the surgeon immediately, and so did Charles and Paula.
"How is he?" We asked simultaneously, our voice blending into one. "Is everything okay?"
"The surgery is a success," he announced and I felt myself let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding as a wave of relief washed over me in an instant and the weight was lifted off of me. Beside me, I watched as they let out a sigh of relief, a slight smile tugging at the corners of their lips. "But he will have to remain in the hospital for a couple more days for further observation."
Grateful looks were plastered across our faces as we immediately extended our thanks to the surgeon, thanking him profusely. The surgeon left and it was just the three of us once again. Paula turned to Charles as he wrapped her arms around her, letting her bury her face in his chest as he patted her on her back.
"I told you... everything is going to be okay, our son is okay."
***
I was standing outside of the hospital ward, looking through any gaps I can find, trying to sneak a peek at Xavier.
Charles and Paula refused to let me inside, saying that they would never forgive me for what I put their son through. Little did they know that this was all because of Evelyn, the one that they claimed to love and like so much.
The sun had set by now, I was still sitting outside, refusing to leave until I got a glance of him. I was leaving up against the wall, hugging my knees to my chest when the door creaked open. Almost immediately, I looked up and found myself looking right into Paula’s eyes.
She arched her brow at me. "You are still here?" She questioned, her voice laced with a hint of surprise and disbelief at my persistence. She folded her arms over her chest this time, looking down at me. "I told you we are not going to let you see him, and he doesn’t want to see you."
"I don’t believe you," I said immediately. "If I don’t hear those words come out of his own mouth then I am not leaving," I insisted.
I stood up and pushed past her before I pushed open the door. The air crackled with tension as my eyes landed on Xavier who was leaning against the headboard of the bed. He turned to look at me and we locked eyes from a distance.
The next few words that left his lips made my heart sink.
"Leave."
