Don’t drop your guard. Foxes are cunning. He’s probably putting on this sweet act.

Ugh, here we go again.

Time will reveal the truth. Just be patient.

I blinked.

I just barely escaped death and made my decision. I’m not chickening out now.

Go for it. Let’s see just how dangerous a fox can really be. One lethal rabbit in this place is plenty—we don’t need two.

"Elara..." Finnian looked away.

When he turned his head slightly, most of his pale neck showed. Beneath his golden-white hair, his earlobe glowed crimson, partially concealed.

I cocked an eyebrow. Without all those romance breakdowns I’d studied, I would’ve completely missed his little maneuver.

Unlike the others’ clothing, the fox sported a flowing, cinched white embroidered robe. Simple-looking at first, but stitched with silver thread in an intricate traditional design, making his lean figure shine where he stood.

My playful streak kicked in. I hooked my finger into his collar and dragged him toward the hatch. The sudden proximity made us both flush.

Finnian’s dense, curved lashes created shadows on his cheeks. Underneath lay skin like porcelain and tender lips.

The control panel announced: "Chamber Six, Finnian: Spirit collapse level reduced by 2 points. Current spirit collapse level: 52."

I yanked him closer. Finnian leaned in instinctively. Before he could process what was happening, he felt gentle lips press against his.

The control panel spoke again: "Chamber Six, Finnian: Spirit collapse level reduced by 5 points. Current spirit collapse level: 47. Communications restored."

Kaelen’s sharp voice cut through: "Got your comms back already? Lucky bastard."

Julian whined next: "Everyone else’s levels drop except mine."

Dorian said: "Nice work."

Barrett added: "Agreed."

Alistair ate silently across from them. He had no commentary. If Finnian could get me to touch him by choice, that showed skill.

As the most enigmatic resident, Alistair seldom talked to Finnian, even when they were face-to-face. They barely knew each other—their longest exchange had been when Alistair frightened me.

"I understand everything now," Finnian said, his beautiful eyes shimmering.

He carefully stepped back, retreated, and bowed as if honoring something sacred. "Thank you, my lady."

I grinned: "Don’t mention it. I’ll work hard and look after you."

Foxes captivated scholars—and I wasn’t immune.

I could sense that Finnian, like Silas, genuinely cared for me. It was all above board, and I had a weakness for attractive faces. Everything clicked.

Finnian smiled through his tears.

"How could I not be grateful? Without you, I might have perished in this prison. I adore you, Elara."

She was the beacon in his shattered, dark existence.

In Chamber Seven, Silas spun away quickly when he spotted me. He acted like he was hiding, but his arms dangled uselessly, fingernails cracked, blood streaming down his skin. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Next to him lay the destroyed medical robot in pieces.

"Why didn’t you get your injuries treated?" I asked.

Silas stayed silent. He just stood defiantly with his back turned, blood spreading across the carpet.

"Talk to me." I raised my voice.

Silas’s chest rose and fell rapidly. He was livid—furious with me.

I’d spent some time at Kaelen’s hatch, a brief moment at Julian’s, and even more time with Dorian and Barrett.

Alistair had transformed into human form.

And Finnian...

Silas swallowed his fury and turned gently, whimpering like a wounded pup. "Elara, it hurts so badly."

Tears leaked from his bright crimson eyes. I froze, my thoughts scrambling.

Wait—he’s actually crying? This isn’t how things are supposed to unfold.

"Don’t move. I’m coming in," I said.

Gorgeous faces really did make people reckless.

I shoved the delivery robot out of the way and crawled through the hatch once more.

Silas’s grin emerged.

"My mate walked straight into my snare again. My mate!"

Once I was inside, he switched back to looking pathetic.

"Why didn’t you seek treatment?" I asked.

Silas whispered: "The robot injured me. And you walked away. I thought..."
