Elara’s POV

My attack skill: Leafbolt—though I preferred calling it Leaf Storm.

I moved fast, disappearing into the venom fog as I channeled my power. Green light flashed through the dark forest in rapid bursts. Fighting with both hands came naturally to me—a perk of my constant mental back-and-forth.

One hand braced for landing, the other unleashed Leaf Storm.

Three male insects? I had plenty of fight left.

"Smoke’s toxic—split up and chase her!"

"Run! Something’s coming!"

The other two insects thought they’d misheard. They looked up to see a thick storm of leaves slicing straight toward them.

The second my feet hit the ground, I vanished again. The recoil from Leaf Storm launched me forward.

"Is it a female?" one insect asked.

"Definitely—she’s got powers."

"Powers are good! Unlimited healing, unlimited breeding. Finally found a useful female. Bring her back to the hive—we’ll all share. Split up. Cut her legs off once you catch her."

I rubbed my hands in excitement.

Counting their chickens before they hatch? Cute. A hive, huh?

"She might have spatial power—be careful."

"Not sure. She’s using a Dragonfire Blaster. I know that weapon—it’s..."

His words cut off mid-sentence. His head was gone.

I appeared out of nowhere, moving like a ghost, and struck at point-blank range.

My lightsaber hummed. Slimy insect blood splattered all over my face. I scoffed.

Giant cockroaches? Please. I’d seen plenty of these during the apocalypse—just needed a slipper to kill them.

I redirected Leaf Storm with a flick of my wrist. The remaining two insects finally realized how dangerous this female was. Breeding didn’t matter anymore—they flapped their wings and shot toward the sky.

I wasn’t about to let my Feral Cores get away. "You wanted to catch me—why run now?"

As I spoke, vines shot straight up. Using my spatial power, I leaped a dozen times in a row, weaving through the air with Leaf Storm. Alone, I cut off the arrogant insects’ escape route.

I landed on a vine, haloed by starlight from the galaxy above. Lightsaber in hand, hair blowing in the wind, I held a bloody insect head in my other hand.

The two remaining insects locked eyes, then activated their battle armor and charged.

"This cocky female thinks it’s just us three?"

With their armor on, swarms of insects poured out of nowhere, darkening the sky.

"Damn it," I cursed.

Rushed again—no honor in fighting fair.

I’d always thought I was a little crazy. When others panicked, they cried or screamed. Not me—at life-or-death moments, I just wanted to laugh.

Why?

Because my greed kicked in. I stopped caring if I lived or died.

Insect wings could be made into armor. Their lean meat tasted amazing when fried, packed with energy—better than many nutrient bottles.

Thanks to the truce, these goods were scarce and overpriced, with no one selling them.

So were these insects? No—they were credits, money.

Though they were ugly—really ugly. Staring at the endless swarm below, I hesitated.

Can something this gross really drop a Feral Nexus?

I stuffed the severed insect head into my space, then ran along the vines while reactivating Venomforged.

It was late afternoon. Alistair had searched the entire sanctuary and still hadn’t found Elara. Staring at the endless sea of stars, he couldn’t sit still.

Tell the others?

They were all stuck inside—knowing wouldn’t help, just make them panic.

Rewrite 007 and the other patrol droids’ orders to search for her? No. The droids were controlled by the system. He could hack them, but not change their core commands.

Elara, where was she?

Rustling insects climbed up the vines, closing in fast. I glanced back, pointed the Dragonfire Blaster at my feet, and fired.

Flames exploded. A wave of burnt stench hit me. I gagged and jumped into my space. Two B-class males with battle armor—definitely not easy.

This was going to be a tough fight.

Looking around, I dropped my smile. I couldn’t laugh anymore—I realized even in my space, the insects were tracking me.

"Shit," I cursed.

I took a quick breath, chugged a bottle of strong liquor, then jumped out of my space, reenergized.

My lightsaber hummed with battle intent. By now, the two insects had recognized my weapons: Kaelen’s Dragonfire Blaster and Barrett’s Moonshadow Blade.
