Rosalind had dragged Silas into this mess too, but Silas wasn’t playing by anyone’s rules. He slapped his resignation down in front of Liam without a single word.

The sanatorium was history, but at least they’d managed to salvage those treatment pods. Liam still wanted to push forward with his original scheme, but one glance at Silas’s expression made him bite his tongue.

Yeah, that guy’s definitely not the cooperative type.

Elara’s POV

I got back around noon. Finnian had dragged me to Frostpeak World for some shopping spree. He’d been riding high all morning.

Fresh off his honeymoon high, he’d not only gotten one over on that pain-in-the-ass Silas, but he’d also gotten to spend the whole night with me. Then we bumped into some wandering merchant named Xander...

And Xander just had to acknowledge me. Finnian’s face went stone cold when he heard "Ms. Pendragon."

Ms. Pendragon?

I could practically hear him thinking, "So my wife’s got herself another identity floating around. Pendragon?"

Finnian was seething. The second we walked through the door and he spotted Silas, his jaw clenched tight.

"Look who finally decided to show up," Silas drawled from his spot against the stone pillar, hands shoved deep in his pockets, eyes boring into Finnian.

That tone? Oh, Silas’s definitely pissed. Seeing Silas all worked up actually lifted my husband’s mood considerably.

"Wasn’t planning on it," Finnian shot back, "but I got worried some poor rabbit might suffocate on his own rage."

He knew exactly where to hit where it hurt.

Silas’s laugh was sharp as a blade. "You trying to get yourself killed?"

Finnian snorted. "What? You mean this?" He flashed his ring. "Elara picked this out for me. Said it was perfect. And these cufflinks—what’s your professional opinion, Dr. Pendragon? Looking sharp?"

Silas’s face went dark. Honestly, if I wasn’t standing right there, those two probably would’ve started throwing punches already.

Who asked for his opinion anyway?

While they were locked in their testosterone-fueled standoff, I was busy playing with Dorian using a feather toy.

The little leopard was going absolutely wild in the flower beds, so excited his human form slipped completely. Tail wagging, licking my fingers, rubbing against me—he pulled out every adorable trick he knew, and I couldn’t help grinning.

I caught the tension crackling between Silas and Finnian.

But honestly? I was having way too much fun with Dorian. If they wanted to duke it out, that was their business—I really couldn’t care less.

Back at the sanatorium, maybe I would’ve tried to smooth things over to keep Silas calm. Back then, I worried about the one trapped inside getting the raw deal. But now? They were all free. They could settle their own scores.

I was perfectly content watching this drama play out.

Both Silas and Finnian glanced my way at exactly the same moment, then let out identical sounds of disgust.

Silas sneered, "Guess you’re not as important to her as you thought."

Finnian fired back, "Right back at you. She’s not exactly rushing to your rescue either."

Silas’s stare turned glacial. He kept that smile plastered on, but anyone with eyes could see he was boiling inside. "Remember when you were locked up in that ward, acting like some feral animal? She was right there beside me, offering comfort."

Finnian’s smirk widened as he crossed his arms, dropping his voice to a dangerous whisper. "Is that what you’re calling it? Because she was holding me pretty damn tight..."

That statement could be interpreted two very different ways.

Silas tilted his chin up, affecting boredom. "Congratulations."

The word came out like broken glass.

"Much appreciated." With that, Finnian snatched up his shopping bags and stalked inside.

Silas watched him disappear.

Held him tight?

I saw a slight smirk play at his lips, as if his mind had wandered to that four-piece set he’d discovered in my room. But there was still one irritating obstacle to deal with.

He headed for the kitchen and filled two glasses with water.

"You two worn out yet?" he called over. "Come hydrate."

Dorian let out a tiny growl, shrinking into his leopard form and curling up in my lap. Silas’s expression was all sunshine and rainbows as he met my eyes, offering one glass to Dorian. "Parched, Your Highness?"

Dorian’s ears flattened against his skull, eyeing Silas with deep suspicion.

His suspicious glare seemed to say, "Since when is he playing nice? There’s no way he just watched me bond with Elara and suddenly decided to be generous. This water’s definitely spiked with something nasty."

Before Dorian could spiral further into paranoia, Silas took a long sip from the glass. Reassured, Dorian finally lapped some up.

He looked pleasantly surprised, as if thinking, "Sweet. Actually tastes pretty decent."

Silas observed, that faint smile still ghosting his lips.

I guessed he was originally planning to serve it to Finnian, but realized Dorian was just as much of a pest. Way too many people cluttering up this place.

After Dorian finished drinking, Silas shifted his focus to me, his expression going soft. "The others are occupied. What sounds good for lunch? I’ll cook."
