Barrett jumped in right away, "Count me in. No way I’m letting someone else cover for my mate." He quickly added, "Front it for me for now–I’ll pay you back the moment I get my comms back."

Alistair was ready to brush him off. "’She’s my mate too.’"

But before he could speak, the others chimed in.

"Me too!"

"And me!!"

"Me!!!"

Watching everyone so eager to contribute, Alistair felt quietly pleased. At least they understand–can’t just freeload off another man’s mate.

"Alright then," he said with a soft laugh. "Just keep one thing in mind: as far as anyone else knows, Elara’s a powerless nobody."

Finnian responded flatly, "Understood."

Alistair concluded, "That wraps up today’s meeting. Hope we’re all clear."

The six "volunteers" responded together, "Roger that."

"Wait–hang on. There’s a problem with the plan," Kaelen interrupted.

"What is it?"

"Do those three know anything about this?"

Julian rolled his eyes. Dorian looked completely fed up. Barrett let out a bitter laugh. Silas remained silent as always. Finnian had nothing to say.

Alistair answered evenly, "Why do you think she got expelled from her family? If those three hadn’t cut our supplies, he probably never would’ve tapped into her ability."

His mate was far cleverer than he’d expected–and far more loyal to him and Barrett than they’d understood.

A perfect misunderstanding, created by poor communication, was now set in stone.

Elara would like to set the record straight–she just wanted to feed herself properly.

Hearing this, quiet settled over all seven wards. "’Our mate cares for us so deeply. She risked discovery just to grow food for us.’"

"Who’s grinding their teeth?" Alistair asked.

"General Barrett."

Alistair sighed. "We’re trapped here without communication. Let things unfold for now."

The moment he got access to a working communicator, he was going to ensure those three faced consequences. Immediately.

For now, their task was maintaining secrecy. Elara wouldn’t speak; they wouldn’t probe. And they’d focus on treatment compliance to get discharged faster.

Elara’s POV

Ah–choo!!!

"Am I getting sick?"

Ah–choo!!!

Perfect. Just perfect. First superstitious nonsense I’ve heard in forever.

Who the hell is discussing me way out here? Those three worthless exes?

Beatrix started it, and the other three joined in. And, like before, I found myself picturing their smug expressions.

I walked back to the greenhouse. Today’s mission: clear two more large planting areas.

Peppers? Potatoes?

No. I wanted fruit. While purifying the soil, I pulled out strawberry seeds. Usually you’d start with seedlings–but I didn’t need to.

I was a bit obsessive about organization; the squares had to be perfectly aligned and uniform. As the vines grew in circles, I grabbed my pruning shears and trimmed any irregular spots.

Then the second large square. This one I designated for potatoes. They’d pair perfectly with meat, and there was milk in the kitchen. Later, I could make creamy mashed potatoes and fries.

Now that I had tomatoes, I could harvest some later for ketchup. Oh, and strawberry preserves... freeze–dried strawberries, sliced strawberries...

Wiping my mouth, I was already drooling.

After completing both squares, I used my wood ability to sprout the potatoes, chopped them into sections, and set them aside for planting.

Swinging the hoe kicked up dust everywhere, but I didn’t feel worn out at all. I loved this independent lifestyle.

After a while, I finally finished working the purified soil. With my ability, I didn’t need fertilizer, but I had to handle pests. I scattered ash as foundation, bordered the area with vines, then used a small hoe to form the rows strawberries on one side, potatoes on the other.

Once everything was planted, I was covered in soil and completely drained.

Another day, another reason to respect farmers.

The instant I activated my wood ability, the potatoes sprouted and the strawberry vines extended. A gentle green light emanated from my fingertips until the potatoes bulged from the earth and large, bright–red strawberries dangled from the vines. Only then did I withdraw.

My hidden area now contained three large planting squares. I felt pretty satisfied about it.

After all that effort, I picked several strawberries. No fertilizer, accelerated growth–but they were still massive, gorgeous, and tasty. I popped one in my mouth, and the sweetness overwhelmed me like a tide. Now this is what I call fulfillment.

I collected some potatoes and tomatoes as well.

When I emerged from the greenhouse, it was still early. Thinking of the guys in the hospital rooms, I didn’t return to the dorm. Instead, I wove several vine bracelets, grabbed the strawberries, and headed toward the wards.
