Chapter 39: Heart of Sun

Chapter 39

Dang!

Ashton swung his axe at the chains as thick as an adult’s arm.

Dang!

Ashton’s axe began to lose its sharp edge while chipping away the chains.

Dang! Dang!

A deep gash appeared on the chains, while his axe was completely destroyed. However, he didn’t have to worry about it as he had brought supplies for months. Enough axes to form a small team and clean this entire Filth Drop of any trees.

Taking out another axe, he began his job as a woodcutter or a steel cutter in this case.

’Is her penetration really that awesome? She severed this chain with only two thrusts.’ The woman Ashton was speaking of is Anastasia.

In the original timeline, following the book, Anastasia wasn’t this deeply injured except for Rias. His fate was the same as now.

Just like that for ten minutes or so, Ashton broke four axes. It resulted in having his right hand bleed once again, dyeing the bandage in red. However, this didn’t matter because he was finally able to shatter the chain with the new fifth axe.

Thrang!

The moment the chain shattered, it sprang up like a spring and dangled midair. Fortunately, Ashton had already left the top of the iron cage.

Standing in front of it, Ashton saw a thin line appear in the middle of the iron cage. Gradually it deepened before a gap was visible. Just like a book, the iron cage parted, kicking away the dust on the floor. The thick dust filled the air, making it difficult to discern the inside of the iron cage.

However, everyone didn’t have to worry about it, as Filth Energy, thicker than the dust, began gushing out, blowing away the dust.

"Here comes another one." Ashton shook his head in dismay as he stood calmly, bracing for the Filth Energy hitting his body; so did others.

The final Lingering Reality of this ward quickly sent them to one last memory lane.

...

"Quick, save your father, child."

A mother rubbed at the confused girl’s head. Her five-year-old brain couldn’t comprehend what she was ordered to do.

Kill me.

"You are a disgusting wrench."

A boy spoke with extreme repulse toward the girl that was experiencing the teenage years.

Kill me.

"Hahaha... guys, this thing is the best. I can release as much as I want without worry."

A man buckled his pants, gesturing to his companion to enjoy the girl that just entered the age of maturity.

Kill me.

"Oh, Miss, you can really give birth in such a unique way. Look at him."

A nurse handed a baby with a spiky head, its jagged teeth biting its own lips. It growled like an animal. However, the woman on the bed took the child in her arms with motherly love filled in her eyes. She didn’t care what the baby was; at least it was hers.

Kill me.

"Ah... I am really curious. How can you smile? Watching others suffer has taken the smile away from my face. So, how can you do it while suffering ten times more than others? Does stopping the disease from spreading make you happy or seeing these disgusting creatures as your children?"

A plague doctor sat by a bed. He asked the woman with her belly expanded. There was fresh blood and hair visible on her face. To the plague doctor’s question, the woman gave a gentle smile in response, melting with the warm sunlight illuminating the room filled with baby cribs.

Kill...me...

Watching the children she gave birth to slowly gnawing away her body, her smile still remained. But this time, it was a deliverance of relief.

The woman finally spoke, whispering to the babies around her.

"Thank you."

...

"Ahhhhh! Ahhhh!" Just as the Lingering Reality ended, Anastasia screamed. Letting out the grief in her heart. She who was devoid of motherly care since birth had her heart impacted the most.

Tears rolled down Lovia’s face, mixing with snot. She only felt sad reading this part of the story, but experiencing it herself, she understood her imagination was holding her back.

Meanwhile, Rias’s face contorted into anger with tear-filled eyes. His hatred towards the world secretly increased unbeknownst to him.

On the other hand, Ashton shed no tears like the previous times. Instead, his face filled with disappointment towards the human heart. He had already shed tears when reading it for the first time.

"Kill...mee..." A coarse, womanly voice sounded, grabbing everyone’s attention.

Forcing their tears to stop, they looked at the Filth that was inside the iron cage.

The woman from the Lingering Reality was lying down on a bed. Her face was dishevelled, with deep gashes on her head, revealing the beating brain. She was as thin as a wooden stick, as most of the meat looked eaten away. Her bloated stomach, double her size, had been ripped apart. A miasma-like substance is constantly dripping on top of her.

The woman turned her head to the side, looking at their group. She spoke with long pauses between each word. "Please...kill...me..."

"I... I can’t watch it anymore..." Anastasia turned her back, and so did Lovia. She, too, can’t look at the woman’s face.

At that moment, Ashton presented a sword to Rias. "Take it and quickly end her misery."

Without hesitation, Rias took the sword and limped forward with Ashton’s help.

After they arrived in front of the woman, she looked straight into their eyes with joy.

Rias didn’t kill her instantly. Instead, he asked Ashton with a deadpan expression. "What should we call her? We can’t kill her like she is an unknown woman."

Ashton put on a thoughtful expression as if he was coming up with a name, but he didn’t have to do the hassle, as the author had given a worthy name.

"Let’s call her the Sunshine Girl. The girl whose heart can never embrace darkness."

The woman—no, the Sunshine Girl’s eyes flickered undetected by Ashton and Rias.

"A fitting name." Rias nodded his head in approval.

"Indeed." Ashton agreed, as someone so pure couldn’t represent the Filth.
