Claire’s POV

Evander’s shoulders slumped slightly, the anger in his posture giving away to his sadness. "And now... now he is not even here to explain himself."

I reached out hesitantly, placing a hand on his arm. "Evander, he loved you. That much I’m sure of. Maybe he didn’t tell you because he didn’t want you to see him differently, or maybe he just didn’t know how to tell you. But I know he cared for you deeply."

Evander didn’t respond immediately, his gaze fixed on the floor. When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter, filled with a deep ache.

"Maybe," he said, more to himself than to me. "But it doesn’t make this any easier to accept." He said and walked away from there.

I stood frozen in place, watching his lonely figure as he turned away from me. His broad shoulders, usually so confident and commanding, now seemed so lonely and said that my chest tightened painfully, and before I could stop myself, tears welled up in my eyes and streamed down my face.

No matter how much I told myself I hated him, seeing him like this—broken and vulnerable—was unbearable. The ache in my heart was sharp and overwhelming, even more intense than the pain I had felt when I thought he had betrayed me.

I wiped my tears quickly, trying to steady myself as my eyes landed on the notice Gloria had sent to Evander.

I couldn’t believe there was a mother in this world who wanted to kill her own son! The thought sent a shiver down my spine, and I felt a surge of anger bubbling up within me. How could anyone stoop so low?

I picked up the file, clutching it tightly in my hands as if holding onto it could somehow steady my emotions. "I never knew, Evander... that you were as sad and as lonely as me," I whispered, my voice cracked, and tears kept streaming out of my eyes.

Gloria wasn’t just cruel—she was a force of destruction. She had ruined so many lives: Elijah’s, Lexi’s, Evander’s... and now, she was trying to destroy Eliam’s.

I felt my resolve harden. I wouldn’t let her win.

But then another thought hit me like a bolt of lightning. If Lexi couldn’t get pregnant, then whose son was Eliam? The question made my heart race, doubt creeping into my mind. Was Evander lying? Could he be hiding something even now?

I shook my head, forcing the thought away. No. I couldn’t doubt him—not when we were on the same side and when I had decided to fight alongside him.

"I shouldn’t doubt Evander if I have to work with him," I said aloud, as if hearing my own voice would solidify my determination.

With a deep breath, I stared at the file in my hands. This wasn’t just Evander’s fight anymore—it was mine too. Gloria had taken too much from us, and I wouldn’t stand by and let her continue.

Evander’s POV

I couldn’t believe what I had just heard. My brother... Elijah... was in love with the same gender. It wasn’t that I was judging him, not at all, but the fact that he never told me? That deeply stung!

Why? Why was I kept in the dark about something so important? I had always confided in him. He was my rock, the one person I could trust with everything. Even when I married Claire, it was Elijah who helped me plan everything. He supported me, guided me, and stood by me through it all.

"Damn it!" I muttered under my breath, clenching my fists. All this time, I had been so wrapped up in my own life, with my own struggles—that I never once stopped to think about what Elijah might have been going through.

But then another thought struck me like a hammer. Why did he marry Lexi? Was it out of love? Or... was it because he felt he had no choice? Was it to hide his true self from the world?

The more I thought about it, the more questions flooded my mind. If Elijah was forced into a life that didn’t reflect who he truly was, then how much pain must he have endured? And why did he never trust me enough to share that burden?

"Was I so blind?" I whispered to myself, the weight of guilt settling heavily on my shoulders.

I sat down, burying my face in my hands as the memories of our times together replayed in my mind. All the times I leaned on him, all the moments he supported me without hesitation... How could I have been so self-absorbed?

"Whatever you were hiding, brother," I said aloud, my voice firm with determination, "I will uncover it. And I swear, I will make things right! If someone is behind your demise, I will kill them with my bare hands."

I punched the wall beside me with all my strength, the impact sending a sharp pain through my hand. Blood trickled from my knuckles, but I barely noticed it. The physical pain was nothing compared to the storm raging inside me.

I loosened my tie as I yanked it completely, and a suffocating weight pressed down on my chest. It felt like the walls were closing in, the air too thick to breathe. No matter how much I tried to reason with myself, no matter how many times I told myself to stay calm, it was useless.

My breaths grew ragged as each inhale burned my lungs. I clutched my hair, I sank to the floor, trying to make sense with everything that Elijah had one. Why? Why had My chest tightened, and a wave of regret hit me so hard I thought I might collapse under its weight. "Damn it!" I shouted, slamming my fist into the floor.

I was still sitting there, my back against the wall, trying to figure out my next step. No matter what had happened with Elijah, one thing was clear—I needed to protect his son. I couldn’t let Gloria ruin Eliam’s life the way she had destroyed so many others.

But how? The thought gnawed at me, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth. I had never been loved, I didn’t know how to express my feelings; I didn’t know how to comfort or nurture anyone.

Eliam didn’t deserve any of this chaos, and I couldn’t shake the thought of him being dragged into it. He was innocent and a child who had already lost so much.

But where would I even begin? Protecting him wasn’t just about keeping him safe from Gloria. He needed love, stability, and reassurance—all things I wasn’t sure I could give.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. "I can’t fail him," I whispered to myself.

"You won’t fail him." I was still in my thoughts when a hand appeared on my shoulder and Claire sat beside me. "I will help you get Eliam back from Gloria!"
