Claire’s POV

"Leave me alone, you bastard! Go to your mistress! I am nothing to you!" I snapped as I shook myself out of his grip and pushed him away. But his hold on me was firm, refusing to let me go.

"No! I never had a mistress!" He insisted and pulled me closer, his arms wrapped around me even tighter. "If I had one, it would only ever be you!"

"What?" My eyes widened in shock. His words didn’t make sense to me. Did he really believe that I was nothing more than a mistress, a golddigger in his life? Anger surged through me, and I pinched his waist, finally managing to break free from his embrace.

I shot him a glare. "Listen, Mr. Kensington! I am not the kind of woman you are looking for. I don’t sell myself for money!"

"What? What are you talking about?" He looked taken aback, his expression genuinely confused as he stared into my eyes. It seemed like he didn’t understand what he said, how his words had hurt me, or why I was reacting this way.

"Get lost!" I shot back as I turned my head away to the other side. I couldn’t believe I had ever fallen in love with such an oblivious fool. How could he act so blind? And here I thought that this low-EQ person could cheat on me! I bit my lip, fighting back a smirk at his completely bewildered expression.

"Oh! No, no, no, no!" he stammered, his face paling as he rushed around to face me again. "Please, forgive me! That is not what I meant to say."

"Really?" I arched an eyebrow as I could barely hide the amusement that crept onto my face. "I have been married to you for years, and that’s exactly how I have felt all this time. Now you finally admit it— that I am just a mistress for you!"

"No! I swear, I didn’t mean that," he pleaded as he grabbed my hand.

"Don’t lie to me!" I yanked my hand back. "You just admitted it yourself!" I wasn’t about to let him off so easily. After all these years, I had felt like I was nothing to him. I wanted him to understand just how much he had made me feel invisible.

We both went quiet, and the silence filled the room. He looked like he was struggling to find the right words, his eyes darting around as if the answers were somewhere in the room. Finally, he sat down on the bed across from me, his gaze steady as he spoke.

"Claire, you are my wife. You are the only woman I want in my life, whether as my girlfriend, my wife, or anything else. I have never wanted or loved anyone but you."

Wait—did he just say he loved me?

I let out a sharp laugh, shaking my head. "Hah! Mr. Kensington, are you trying to fool me again?" I felt the urge to push him away, to guard myself from his words, so I looked away and told him to leave me alone.

But he didn’t budge. "If I didn’t love you, Claire... I never would have married you," he replied, his voice soft yet firm. Those words were as simple as they were, but it started a storm within me!

How could he say these things so easily after everything he had put me through? The pain, the endless nights of feeling worthless— it was like none of it mattered to him. Yet here he was, acting like he could just sweep it all away so easily.

"First of all, let me make myself clear, Mr. Kensington," I said, my tone steady as I tried to keep any trace of emotion out of it.

"Go ahead, Mrs. Kensington," he replied, flashing me a smile with a hint of playfulness.

What on earth did I just see and hear? This man, who always had a cold edge to his words, was not only speaking to me softly but actually smiling. Did he even know how to smile? I couldn’t remember a single time he had smiled at me or at anyone like that.

And "Mrs. Kensington"? I narrowed my eyes and felt my heart squeez! I always longed to hear that from him and from anyone. What did he mean by calling me that now, as if I were anything to him? After everything, he thought he could just say a few sweet words, and I would forget the pain he had caused?

I took a deep breath. "Don’t call me that. You have treated me like nothing for so long, and I don’t intend to fall for any sweet talk now."

He blinked, surprised by my words, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of guilt. But it didn’t matter to me now! "The thing I wanted to say to you is that I am not your wife! I sent you the divorce papers, so... I am not your wife anymore." I said in a steady tone, hoping that he would finally understand.

"Do you really believe that, Claire?" Evander asked, raising an eyebrow. "Let me remind you, Mrs. Kensington, it takes two to tango. And guess what? You were the only one who signed those papers, not me."

"What does that mean?" I stared at him, my eyes widening in disbelief. "Why didn’t you sign them? I made it clear in my letter that I was leaving because I had fallen in love with someone else!"

"You did say that, Claire," he replied calmly. "But you never said I needed to sign the papers too. And nowhere did it say that I had to stop loving you just because you claimed to love someone else."

I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. He looked at me, and for once, I could see a hint of vulnerability in his eyes, a depth I hadn’t noticed before.

I felt my heart race, not knowing what to say, his words both infuriating and confusing me.
