Evander’s POV

I stood up, carrying Eliam in my arms as I made my way to his bedroom. "Let’s pick out your favorite clothes," I said, trying to lighten the mood. "What do you think?"

We stepped into his room, and I set him down carefully. As I helped him wash his face. "See? All clean," I said as I dried his face with a soft towel. "Now, let’s get you dressed."

Eliam gave me a shy smile, his earlier tears forgotten for a moment. As I helped him into a small suit that mirrored my own, I couldn’t help but notice how mature he looked for a child his age. The thought made my heart ache, but I pushed it aside.

"Son," I said softly, kneeling in front of him as he sat on the bed. His small hands fiddled with his jacket buttons, and I gently stilled them. "Listen to me carefully, okay?"

"What is it, Daddy?" He tilted his head, his big, innocent eyes staring at me with curiosity.

I hesitated, searching for the right words.I was always a man of action, not explanations. But this was Eliam, my son, and I wanted to talk to him and tell him everything that is important.

"You see," I began slowly, "when we go to your mother’s workplace, you can’t call her ’Mommy’ there."

His smile fell instantly, replaced by a look of shock. His little hands clutched at the edge of his jacket as tears threatened to spill again. "What?" he asked in a small, trembling voice. "Does Mommy not want me anymore?"

I panicked a little, my chest tightening at the sight of his watery eyes. I was never good with emotions—never good at saying the right things. And now, seeing my son on the verge of tears, I felt utterly helpless.

"No, no, no, Eliam," I said quickly, reaching out to pat his hair, my voice softer than before. "It’s not like that at all."

"Then... why?" he whispered, his bottom lip quivering.

I sighed heavily, feeling the weight of his innocent questions. "Your Mommy loves you very much," I explained as my tone was patient but strained as I searched for the right way to put it. "It’s just... where she works, no one knows that she is married to me."

"Why?" His voice was louder now, confused and stubborn. "Does she not want you too, Daddy?"

I couldn’t help but let out a small, tired chuckle at his innocence, though it was almost the truth, but it might not be in the future. "No, son, it’s not that." I paused, carefully brushing his hair back from his forehead. "It’s just... your Daddy is a rich and powerful man, remember?"

He nodded slowly, his brows furrowing in concentration.

"Sometimes," I continued, my voice quieter, "people can be unkind. If they find out that your Mommy is married to someone like me, they might treat her badly or bully her. We don’t want that to happen, do we?"

Eliam shook his head firmly, his little fists curling in determination. "No! I won’t let anyone bully Mommy!"

I smiled faintly, feeling a swell of pride in my chest. This little boy—my son—already had so much spirit, so much heart. "That’s my boy," I murmured, lifting him into my arms. His small arms instantly wrapped around my neck, and I held him close, pressing my cheek gently against his head.

"Then, you have to promise me something, Eliam," I said, my voice soft but steady. "If you want to come and see your Mommy, you have to be on your best behavior. You can’t call her ’Mommy’ there, okay? Just call her ’Miss Claire,’ like everyone else does. Or Auntie is fine too."

He pulled back slightly, his tear-filled eyes looking into mine. "But... I want to call her Mommy," he said with a sniffle.

"I know you do," I said gently, my thumb brushing the corner of his eye where a tear threatened to fall. "And when we are home, you can call her Mommy as much as you want. But this is important—this will help protect her. Can you do that for me and for her?"

Eliam’s little brows scrunched together, and after a moment of deep thought, he nodded bravely. "I promise, Daddy," he said, his voice small but full of resolve. "I won’t let anyone bully Mommy or you."

I felt a strange tightness in my throat as I hugged him again. "Good boy," I whispered, my voice rougher than I intended.

As he sniffled into my shoulder, I patted his back gently. "You are a strong boy, Eliam. And you will see Mommy soon, okay?"

"Okay," he mumbled, his tiny fingers gripping my collar tightly.

In that moment, holding my son in my arms, I realized just how much I wanted to protect him and Claire. Even if I wasn’t the best with words, my actions would speak for me, and I will try to change myself too. I would make sure they were both safe, no matter what it took.

I took Eliam in my arms and drove to the office where Damian had invited me. Though he always irritated me, I felt a flicker of gratitude that he had reached out.

As I entered the building, yelling echoed through the hallway. The sharp tone made me stop.

Then I heard her voice—calm yet upset. My fist clenched at Claire’s words.

Holding Eliam closer, I walked toward the noise. My steps were steady, but my heart was pounding.

As I turned the corner and saw the scene unfolding, my body stiffened.

"It seems the director is very direct with his work," I said as I entered the room, Eliam still in my arms.
