Evander’s POV

I could barely keep myself in check. If Gloria hadn’t been my mother, I wouldn’t have stopped myself from strangling her right there and then. My fists were clenched so tightly my knuckles had gone white, and I forced myself to take a slow, deep breath to keep from losing it completely.

But her words kept echoing in my mind: Eliam isn’t your son. It felt like a slap to my face and a reminder of what I had been through!

Without another word, I turned on my heel and left, my steps heavy and fast as I stormed out of that house. The cold night air hit me when I reached my car, but it didn’t help me cool my anger. I got inside, slammed the door, gripped the steering wheel, and started the engine. My hands were shaking with anger, but I took off, speeding down the road with no plan of where to go. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Going home didn’t feel right. I couldn’t sit still, not with these thoughts tearing me apart. Sleep was impossible.

It took me a while to register where I had ended up— the memorial, where my brother’s ashes were kept. I sat there in the car for a few moments, my eyes fixed on the building. Finally, I took out a bottle of wine from the compartment and stepped out, closing the car door softly behind me.

I walked up to my brother’s memorial, his picture smiling back at me through the small glass window. It felt like I was staring at a reflection— my brother, Elijah. He looked so much like me. Though he was a few years older, we had the same eyes and the same stubborn expression. I raised my hand, gently brushing my fingers over the glass, tracing the outline of his face.

"Brother... you left too soon," I murmured, my voice barely a whisper. With a sigh, I uncapped the bottle of wine and chugged it down. I could feel the burn down my mouth. "Now there is no one left to share a drink with me," I muttered as I wiped the tears that blurred my vision.

"You should have lived, Elijah... I was the one who deserved to die, not you." My voice cracked as I looked at his picture, and my chest tightened with guilt and sorrow. "I thought... I thought maybe if I worked hard enough, if I gave it everything I had, maybe if I worked hard to make Claire fall in love with me. But even that was too late. She was already gone by the time I reached home."

I took another sip, letting the wine settle the ache in my chest, and looked up at his picture again.

"Do you know, brother... you have a son," I whispered as my voice trembled. "He is just like you. He even has those same eyes that everyone used to say held too much in them, just like yours did." I chuckled softly, feeling warmth break through the sadness for a moment. "He calls me ’Daddy,’ and at first, I didn’t know what to do with that. It felt strange... but it made me so happy. I thought maybe... maybe I wouldn’t be so alone. You left me someone— a piece of you that I could hold onto."

The smile faded as I wiped my mouth with the back of my sleeve, sinking down to sit on the cold floor, my back against the wall beneath his picture.

"But now... that woman, our so-called mother, she is threatening to take him away from me." My voice shook as the anger and pain twisted inside me together. "He is my son, Elijah, mine... but you know her. She is heartless, brother. How could she ever be a mother? How could she think she has the right to take him?"

I closed my eyes, letting the weight of exhaustion wash over me. "But brother..." I murmured as I gripped the bottle tighter. "I hate you; you know that? Why did you keep Lexi and your baby a secret from me?" I laughed bitterly. "Did you think I wouldn’t have been happy for you? Did you think I wouldn’t have congratulated you? Or... were you just planning to leave me behind, like always?"

I was lost in my own thoughts when a man appeared beside me, speaking words I could barely piece together. After chugging down more than half the bottle, my head was spinning, and I could barely focus. I wasn’t much of a drinker compared to Elijah, who could handle far more than I ever could.

"Who are you, mister? It’s barely five in the morning, and you are already here bothering the dead so early?" He asked; his voice was distant and muffled.

"Just... leave me alone. I came here to talk to my brother," I slurred, waving him off, hoping he would take the hint and go away.

"Oh! You are Mr. Kensington!" he muttered after realizing who I was there for. He quickly pulled out his phone and started dialing, his fingers moving on the cell phone.

"Get lost," I mumbled in a weak protest as my vision faded more and more. "Just let me be..."

But before I could push him away, the world around me turned dark, and I felt myself slipping into an endless and silent blackness.
