Claire’s POV

"You don’t need to worry about it," I said coldly, pulling my hand free from his grasp. My voice was steady, but inside, I was crumbling. "It doesn’t matter anymore."

I turned on my heels, refusing to look back, though I could feel his piercing gaze following me. His eyes were filled with something I didn’t want to acknowledge—something that made it harder for me to walk away. But I couldn’t let him see how much his presence, his concern, stirred everything I had worked so hard to bury.

"You can’t leave!" Evander’s voice rang out behind me, firm and unyielding. "I am not letting you leave!"

I stopped in my tracks, my fists clenching as anger bubbled up inside me. I spun around to face him, my glare sharp enough to cut through steel. "And if I want to? What then, Evander? Would you force me to stay with you against my will?" I hissed through gritted teeth as my fury started rising.

His expression didn’t waver. If anything, his jaw tightened, and his eyes darkened with determination. "If that’s what it takes... I would," he said, his voice low and resolute.

Before I could even process his words, he closed the distance between us in one swift motion. His hands reached for me, and I gasped as he scooped me off the floor effortlessly.

"Evander! Put me down!" I shouted, my fists pounding against his chest, but it was like hitting a wall. He didn’t flinch, his grip on me firm yet careful.

"Stop fighting me," he said as he carried me out of the café, his tone calm but laced with a power I couldn’t defy.

"Evander, this is insane!" I protested, twisting in his arms. People in the café stared, their whispers buzzing in the background, but he didn’t care. "Everyone is looking at us!"

"Let them look," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, yet I felt its weight. "I don’t care what anyone thinks, Claire. I am not letting you walk away from me like this!"

His words left me stunned; my protests weakened as my breath caught in my throat. I didn’t know whether to feel furious or... something else entirely. Something dangerous, something I couldn’t afford to feel.

But as he carried me further away, his hold strong and unrelenting, I realized one thing—Evander Kensington never did anything halfway. And I wasn’t sure if that terrified me or made me want to trust him just a little bit more.

Evander carried me to his car, ignoring my protests, and gently placed me in the passenger seat. His movements were calm, but he had a strong grip on the situation. Without a word, he walked around to the driver’s side, slid into the pilot seat, and started the engine.

Before we could leave, a sharp knock on the window startled us both.

I glanced over and saw Sissy standing outside, her face flushed with anger. I sighed and lowered the window.

"Damn it, Claire! You scared the hell out of me!" she snapped, glaring furiously. Her eyes were wild with concern, and I could tell she had been worried sick. "How dare you go to see that venom of a woman all alone? Have you completely lost it? Don’t you remember how much she tortured you? To the point you needed therapy!" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

"Sissy, please—" I tried to cut her off, my voice low and pleading.

"No!" she said sharply, her anger only growing. "Don’t you dare try to shut me up right now! How could you even think of facing her after everything she has done to you?"

"Sissy, please be quiet!" I said more firmly, glancing nervously at Evander, who was sitting next to me, completely still but clearly listening to every word.

Sissy’s fiery gaze shifted to him, and her glare could have set the car on fire. "What?" she spat, her tone dripping with venom. "So what if he hears, huh? He should know! He should know that his mother is a devil!"

The tension in the car was suffocating me. I could feel Evander’s presence beside me, his silence was louder than any words. His jaw tightened, and his hands gripped the steering wheel, but he didn’t interrupt.

"Sissy, enough," I said, my voice trembling. I wasn’t sure if it was from frustration, fear, or the weight of her words.

But Sissy wasn’t done. "You have suffered enough because of that woman, Claire. If he didn’t know before, then he would better know now. His mother destroyed you once, and I won’t let it happen again!"

I clenched my fists, my heart pounding as I looked at Evander. His face was unreadable, and his dark eyes focused straight ahead. For a moment, I thought he might say something, but he didn’t. The silence stretched, heavy and oppressive.

"Sissy," I said softly, my voice barely above a whisper. "That’s enough. Please."

She exhaled sharply, her anger still simmering, but she took a step back. "Fine," she muttered, her glare flicking between me and Evander. "But don’t think this is over."

With that, she turned on her heels and stormed away, leaving an awkward, stifling silence between the two of us.

I leaned back in my seat, my mind racing. Evander still hadn’t said a word, and I wasn’t sure if that was better or worse. Finally, I mustered the courage to glance at him.

His knuckles were white on the steering wheel, his jaw tense, but his voice was calm when he spoke. "Why didn’t you tell me?"

What? Was he not angry that his mother was being criticized, called as a devil and compared to a venom?

I swallowed hard as my throat turned dry. "Because it wouldn’t have changed anything."

His eyes flicked at me, piercing and unreadable. "You don’t know that," he said quietly, his voice steady but carrying a weight that made my chest ache.

I looked away, unsure of how to respond. All I knew was that this was far from over.

"Of course I don’t!" I snapped, my voice trembling with a mix of anger and frustration. "But have you ever tried to ask me? Have you ever thought about how I felt, Evander? Did you even care?"

His hands tightened on the steering wheel, but he didn’t say a word. The silence that followed was deafening, making my chest feel heavier with every passing second.

He started the car without a reply. As we drove, the silence was broken only by the soft hum of the engine and the sound of our breaths.

I stared out the window, my mind racing. I didn’t know where we were going, and I wasn’t sure if I cared. All I could think about was the storm of emotions swirling inside me.

After what felt like an eternity, the car came to a halt. I looked up to find we were parked in front of our home. My stomach tightened at the sight.

There I was again!
