Evander’s POV

I knocked on the door desperately, my heart pounding in my chest. I had no idea if Claire was inside, but after seeing the open balcony door, I couldn’t ignore the hunch. The moment she opened the door, relief surged through me like a wave.

There she was— safe and standing before me. She had only been gone for a few moments, but it felt like an eternity. I had been losing my mind searching for her, and now, seeing her again, I could finally breathe.

Her presence grounded me and made me feel alive. Her scent, warm and familiar, filled the air, calming the chaos raging inside me. Without thinking, I pulled her into my arms, holding her close. For a moment, I forgot everything— the rage, the heat building within me— everything except her.

I scooped her up in my arms and went inside the room. My body felt like it was on fire, every nerve tingling with an unfamiliar sensation. My legs wobbled as I guided her toward the bed, my grip on her tightening to keep myself steady.

Something was wrong with me... terribly wrong.

As frustration bubbled inside me, the realization hit me... I had been drugged. The thought sent a surge of anger through me, but I forced myself to stay calm for Claire’s sake.

"I think I have been drugged," I admitted through gritted teeth, my hands trembling as I tore the tie from my neck. The constricting fabric felt suffocating, and I needed air—desperately.

"What!?" Claire’s eyes grew bigger in shock as tears welled up in her eyes.

I sank onto the edge of the bed, trying to catch my breath. The fire coursing through my veins was relentless, making it harder to think clearly.

Claire knelt in front of me. "It’s all my fault! If it were not for me, you... you wouldn’t have..." She sobbed as she lowered her head as her concern was evident in her soft voice.

"Shh!" I shushed her gently, cupping her face to make her look at me. "It’s not your fault," I said in a low, soothing tone. Her trembling lips parted as if to protest, but I didn’t let her.

"It was them," I continued, my voice hardening with resolve. "The ones who tried to harm you. But I won’t let them go." Determination burned in my chest as I rose to my feet, the thought of retribution coursing through me but at the moment, I couldn’t control the heat in my body.

"I... I will be in the washroom," I said abruptly, turning away before I did something I might regret,

I rushed into the washroom, my body still burning with heat. I turned on the cold shower, letting the icy water run as I tried to steady my breath. My gaze landed on the large jacuzzi in the corner, and without hesitation, I turned the tap to fill it. Maybe the cold water would help calm whatever was raging heat inside me.

But even as the water poured in, the fire within refused to subside. My hands gripped the edge of the sink, my reflection staring back at me. I was flushed, frustrated, and was losing control.

"Evander?"

I was still trying to control myself when Claire’s soft voice reached me, pulling me back to reality. I turned sharply to see Claire standing at the doorway, her brows knit together in worry as my heart started to pound.

"You shouldn’t be here," I said in a strained tone.

"But you don’t look okay," she argued, stepping closer. "You are burning up. Please, let me help—" she put her hand on my forehead to feel my temperature.

"Claire, leave!" I snapped, harsher than I intended. I clenched my fists, trying to keep my tone steady. "I can’t... I can’t control myself right now."

Her eyes widened, but instead of backing away, she stayed rooted in place. "I am not leaving you like this," she said firmly.

Her defiance sent a pang of frustration through me, but also something else and even something more dangerous. The fire inside me surged as her scent filled the small space, intoxicating me and made it impossible to ignore.

"Claire," I warned, my voice dropping low. "Please. If you don’t leave now..."

But she didn’t move. Instead, she stepped closer, her hands reaching for mine. "Evan, I... I can’t leave you like this," she said softly, her gaze locking with mine.

Evan! She called me Evan! When was the last time she called me that?

The last thread of restraint I held onto snapped.

In a single motion, I pulled her against me, my lips crashing onto hers. She gasped against my mouth, but instead of pulling away, she leaned into me, her hands clutching at my shoulders.

The cold water from the shower spilled over us as I pressed her against the wall, my body demanding her presence, her touch. My lips moved hungrily against hers, and she responded just as fervently, her fingers tangling in my damp hair.

"Claire..." I whispered her name between kisses as my voice was thick with need.

She looked up at me, her eyes wide and misty, filled with tears. "Evan," she breathed, her voice trembling but sure.

It seemed she hadn’t expected the kiss— her wide, startled eyes told me she wasn’t ready for it. Realization struck me like a bolt, and guilt clawed at my chest. I tore myself away from her, breathing heavily, trying to regain control.

"Claire..." I said, my voice was shaky as I turned my back to her. "I am not in the right mind at the moment. Please... can you just leave me alone?"

I kept my tone firm yet gentle, not wanting to scare her but only needed her to understand. I couldn’t bear the thought of hurting her in any way— not like this.

She said nothing, but I could feel her hesitation behind me. Her presence lingered, heavy and magnetic, as though she wasn’t ready to walk away. But I couldn’t let her stay, not when the fire raging inside me was growing harder to control and when I could just devour her.
