Claire’s POV

With a heavy heart, I made my way to the cemetery. The sun hung high in the sky, casting a gloomy glow over the rows of gravestones, but all I could focus on was the empty grave waiting for me. It felt surreal that there was a spot of earth reserved for my child—my baby, who never had the chance to see the world.

As I approached, tears filled my eyes, blurring my vision. "I am so sorry," I whispered, my voice shaking. I kneeled before the grave, the cool earth contrasting sharply with the warmth of my grief. "I wanted you so much."

My heart ached with a mix of love and sadness. I had dreamed of holding my baby in my arms, of laughter and joy, but all I had now was this empty space that showed what could have been. The pain of loss wrapped around me like a heavy blanket, squeezing tighter with each drop of my tears.

"You were so loved, even before you were born," I murmured, placing a hand on the grave as if trying to reach out to my child. I imagined the tiny fingers that would never wrap around mine, the little giggles that would never fill my home. The silence of the cemetery felt loud, echoing the silence in my heart. "And I know your father would have loved you as well!"

I wasn’t sure if I was convincing myself or the nonexistent baby of mine. But my grief brushed off that thought.

"I wish I could have held you just once," I cried, feeling the weight of my sadness crash over me like a wave. "I wish things were different." In that moment, I let the tears flow freely, grieving not only for my child but for the future we would never have. I felt utterly alone, lost in a world that kept moving while I remained stuck in this painful moment.

But as I got there, I realized that even though my child was gone, their memory would always be a part of me. I vowed to carry that love with me, to honor the life that could have been, even in the face of my deep sorrow.

"Who are you crying for?"

Sissy’s voice came from behind, pulling me out of my sorrow. I hadn’t even noticed her coming. She hugged me from behind without asking, her usual playful tone gone, replaced with concern. But she didn’t know— she couldn’t have known why I was here.

I didn’t answer right away, my body trembling with the weight of my grief. She turned me around to face her as her eyes were filled with confusion. "Claire, what’s going on?" she asked, her voice shaky. She had already sensed why I was there after seeing the grave in front of me.

I swallowed hard, trying to get the words out, but they stuck in my throat. Instead, I gestured to the grave— the empty grave meant for the child I never got to hold. Sissy’s eyes followed my gaze, and when she realized, her expression shifted from confusion to pure shock as I told her everything in brief.

"Oh my God... you lost a baby?" Her voice cracked. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

I couldn’t even nod; I just broke down. The sobs came uncontrollably, like a dam bursting, and I crumbled into her arms. "I never told you... I couldn’t," I managed to choke out between sobs.

Sissy froze for a moment, the news hitting her hard. She wasn’t prepared for this, for the weight of my secret pain. Then, without a word, she hugged me tighter, as if trying to take on some of the hurt I had been carrying alone for so long. Her own tears started to fall, and soon she was crying with me, sharing in my grief without even needing to fully understand it.

"I had no idea... Claire, I am so sorry," she whispered through her tears, her voice breaking just as much as mine. She wasn’t just shocked—she was devastated for me, for what I had been through, for the child who never had a chance.

We stood there, wrapped in each other’s arms, both crying for the life that was lost, the dreams that had been shattered, and the pain that had been hidden for far too long. Time blurred as we cried together, the sorrow binding us in a way that words never could.

After about an hour, Sissy led me to the nearest restaurant. It was quiet and cozy—the kind of place where no one would disturb us. The cemetery where my baby rested wasn’t far, located in a tranquil, posh area. I had wanted my child to be buried in the Kensington family plot, to be part of their legacy. But no one cared enough to know his existence. So, I found the most peaceful place I could, a place I hoped my baby could rest in peace, away from the coldness of that family.

We sat in silence for a while, the air heavy with everything unspoken. Then Sissy broke the silence. "I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have followed you... I had no idea!" she said softly, her eyes full of regret. Then she asked, "Is that why you came back? Because of this? Is this why you rejected the work and plan to leave again?"

I didn’t say much. My throat still ached from crying, and my voice was raw. So I just nodded, not trusting myself to speak.

Sissy let out a heavy sigh, looking frustrated. "I am sorry to say this, Claire, but you are such a coward!" Her words stung, but before I could react, she continued, her eyes blazing with anger. "I mean, really? You let them walk all over you then, and you are ready to let them do it again? You have survived so much—don’t you dare run away now!"

I stared at her, confused and still emotionally drained. "What are you talking about?" I croaked.

She leaned closer, her voice dropping. "Some woman, Susan, came up to me and said—actually, she had the audacity to say—’If I could throw Claire out of Evander’s life five years ago, I can do it again.’"
