Claire’s POV

I finally saw it in his eyes— Evander really thought he could win me back, that he could erase three years of silence and pain just because he had decided he wanted me again. His words, his promises, felt like they were years too late.

He was right in front of me, so close I could feel the warmth radiating from him. And yet, it felt like he was a thousand miles away. When he said he still loved me and that he had never stopped, I wanted so badly to believe him. I wanted to let down the walls I had built around my heart and just fall back into his arms. But I couldn’t. Not after everything I had been through.

I remember those days, how I used to sit by his side, just hoping for a smile, a kind word, anything to show he cared about me. But he only ever looked at me with that cold, distant stare, as if I were a stranger, a burden he couldn’t wait to be rid of. Every time I reached out, he pulled away. I felt like I was screaming into a void, hoping he would hear me, he would turn around and actually see me. But he never did.

So, I did the only thing I could— I left. I walked away, convinced that I had to let him go before I lost myself completely. I tried to move on, to forget him, but he haunted me. I saw him in my dreams, in every quiet moment, in every place where we had never been together. Even after I walked away, I was still chained to him and hoped that maybe someday he would finally understand how much he had meant to me.

And now, here he was, telling me he had searched for me and that he had been lost without me. But where was this love when I needed it? Where was he when I was sitting alone, hoping he would come home early or say something when he couldn’t! And to make me feel like I wasn’t just a shadow in his life?

He said he had seen me smiling and happy with someone else, and it stopped him from coming to me. That smile he saw... I wanted him to know that I faked it, that it was just a mask I wore to get through the day, to pretend that I was okay. But I couldn’t bring myself to say it. I was afraid that if he knew the truth, he would see through all my defenses and that I would be vulnerable again. And I wasn’t sure I could survive another heartbreak from him.

He reached out to me, his hand gently cupping my cheek, and I felt myself wanting to lean into his touch, wanting to believe in this new version of him who claimed to have never stopped loving me. But I was scared, scared that it was just words, that he would go back to that same distant, cold man he was once.

"Do you really think I would ever force you into something against your will?" he asked, his voice soft. "You told me you wanted out, and I let you go. Not because I didn’t love you— but because I loved you too much to hold you back."

I blinked as I was totally taken aback. I had never thought of it that way. For so long, I believed he hadn’t cared at all and that I was nothing to him. But hearing this, I felt a flicker of something inside me that I thought had died a long time ago.

But just as quickly the doubt came, it rushed back in. "And what about all the times I needed you? All the times I tried to reach you but you were nowhere to be found... and now you just looked right through me? You say you loved me, but where was that love when I sat alone, waiting for you to notice me?"

He was silent, and I could see the regret in his eyes. But regret wasn’t enough to erase the scars.

"Mr. Kensington," I began, my voice firm but tired, "I have said this over and over, and I am so exhausted from repeating myself. This is the last time I will say this, so listen carefully... I am done with you and with this marriage. I can’t do it anymore."

I took a deep breath, steadying myself. "Even if we are still technically married, it doesn’t mean we need to stay this way. There is nothing left here, and I don’t see a reason to continue this charade. I want you to get the divorce papers ready, just like you did back then."

I knew he probably wasn’t the one who had left those papers sitting in his study back then, but I was willing to use it against him if it meant he would finally let me go. If he could end things so easily before, he could do it again now.

"Do I really need to die for you to believe I wasn’t the one who left those papers?" Evander’s voice was raw as he let go of my face. "If divorce is what you really want, then fine... I will give you that. But first, you need to make up for the last three years."

He took a step back, his eyes dark with a mixture of hurt and anger. "You might have felt free, thinking that you had divorced me, maybe even happy with whoever you thought you loved. But while you were moving on, I was trapped, burning in a hell you left me in."

"Excuse me?" I blinked, genuinely confused. "What exactly do you want from me? How am I supposed to make up for anything?"
