"Why must I inform you about my marriage?" Evander said icily, his sharp tone cutting through the room. "I am not obliged to explain my personal life to everyone. As long as I know about it, that’s all that matters. I don’t think others need to concern themselves with it."

Jessica raised a brow, unfazed by his coldness. "Really? We used to date back in the day," she said with a smirk. "Didn’t you once tell me that I looked like someone you loved? And if you couldn’t have her, you would marry me instead?"

Evander’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing. "Miss Jessica," he said through gritted teeth as he patted Eliam gently, "do not put words in my mouth. I do not want my wife to misunderstand my relationship with you, and let me make something perfectly clear— it was you who followed me around and irritated me with your unwanted attention."

The room fell silent, the tension thick as Evander turned his gaze to Damian. "If you don’t believe me, I have a witness standing right here."

Damian, who had been quietly observing the scene, cleared his throat and stepped forward with a forced smile. "Jessica, you truly have a sense of humor," he said, his tone light but calculated. "Back in the day, you were quite... persistent. First, you chased after me, and then... young days indeed."

His words hung in the air, leaving Jessica flustered. However, Damian quickly adjusted his tone, clearly aiming to show that it was a joke and to avoid the situation from completely humiliating her. "But we all joke about things like this, don’t we?" he added with a feigned chuckle, as if trying to smooth over the awkwardness.

Jessica’s face flushed, but she quickly plastered on a smile, pretending to laugh along. "Of course, it was all in jest," she said, though her voice betrayed her unease.

Evander’s gaze lingered on her for a moment before he turned away, signaling the end of the conversation as he put Eliam down and held his hand to leave but before that he wanted to look at Claire openly.

"As for the party, I need my wife’s permission. I can’t go anywhere without her approval," Evander pronounced coolly before turning on his heel to leave the room, leaving Claire flustered and speechless.

Why does he always do this? Claire thought, exasperated. I am possessive? Obsessed? And now I am controlling too? This man is single-handedly turning me into the villain and tyrant wife in everyone’s eyes! She rolled her eyes instinctively and decided to confront him clearly.

"Why are you rolling your eyes?" Evander’s voice cut through her thoughts like a whip. He had turned back, his piercing gaze locking onto hers.

Claire froze for a moment, clearly off guard, before quickly responding, "Forgive me, I was being disrespectful." She bit her lip, knowing that in this place, her reputation was already hanging by a thread. If people thought she was a tyrannical wife at home, it was fine, but she had no choice but to endure here to keep her job.

"Is that so?" Evander said, his tone cold and unyielding. He began walking toward her, each step deliberate and filled with an unspoken tension. "Then why did you roll your eyes like that?"

He walked forth as Claire walked back, trailing her slowly to the wall.

"She is done for!"

"Who has the audacity to roll their eyes at Mr. Kensington? She was asking for it!"

"My God, will she even survive this?"

The murmurs around the room filled the air, growing louder as Evander closed the distance between them. Claire heard every word, and her cheeks burned with a mix of embarrassment and anger. But Evander ignored the chatter entirely, as his attention was solely fixed on her.

He stopped just inches away, effectively cornering her against the wall. The closeness between them made her pulse quicken. His voice dropped to a low, softened tone, but there was no mistaking the authority in his words. "Tell me," he demanded, his gaze boring into hers, "why the eye roll?"

Not everyone in the room could detect the subtle shift in his demeanor, but Damian and Claire noticed it immediately. His icy coldness had melted ever so slightly, replaced by something gentler— something only those who truly knew him could see.

The room was suffocatingly silent, everyone holding their breath in anticipation of what would happen next.

"Don’t hurt my Mommy!"

The soft, high-pitched voice shattered the tension like glass. All eyes turned toward the source of the voice, where Eliam stood with his small fists clenched and his little face full of determination.

Claire’s heart skipped a beat as the room collectively gasped in shock. Eliam’s innocent plea had not only broken the tension but also thrown everyone into a state of stunned disbelief.

Evander’s expression softened instantly, the icy exterior melting away as he looked at his son. "Eliam," he said quietly, stepping back from Claire.

The whispers around the room grew louder, and Claire felt her cheeks flush under the weight of their stares. But as Evander turned to pick up his son, the sight of him cradling Eliam in his arms brought an unexpected warmth to the room.

"Mommy is not in trouble," Evander reassured Eliam gently, his earlier coldness nowhere to be seen. He turned back to Claire, his gaze meeting hers with a flicker of something unspoken. "At least, not today. So, let’s meet Mommy at home later."

Evander could sense the storm brewing in Claire’s eyes. He knew this wasn’t the moment for the world to know about their relationship—especially not like this. No matter what, he wouldn’t let anyone harm her, not even with their words.

"I... I am sorry, Daddy!" Eliam’s small voice broke the silence, his wide eyes full of guilt. "I was wrong."

Evander’s expression softened further as he crouched down to Eliam’s level. "It’s okay, you are allowed to make mistakes," he said, his tone warm and comforting as he patted the boy’s head gently. "I am proud of you."

The room seemed to collectively hold its breath again, shocked at the tender side of the otherwise cold and unyielding Evander Kensington.

"My gosh, Evan! Who knew you could be so loving? I didn’t expect this side of you at all," Jessica chimed in, her voice overly cheerful as she stepped closer with an exaggerated smile. "And—"

"It’s Evander! Call me Evander," he cut her off sharply, straightening to his full height and fixing her with a piercing gaze. "Only my wife gets to call me that."

The room went silent once again, and Claire felt the air shift. She stared at Evander in shock, her breath catching in her throat. He is doing it again!

Jessica’s smile faltered, but she quickly recovered, her expression turning into one of forced amusement. "Oh, I see. Well, Evander, you have certainly changed."

"That’s enough," Damian intervened, stepping forward with an easy smile, trying to diffuse the tension. "Jessica, we all know how much you love to joke, but maybe now isn’t the time."

Jessica’s cheeks flushed, and she gave a nervous laugh, but it was clear that the comment had struck a nerve. She glanced between Evander and Claire, her lips pressed into a tight line before she finally stepped back.

Meanwhile, Evander turned back to Claire, his expression unreadable. But in his eyes, she caught a flicker of protection, maybe even affection. He gave Eliam one last pat on the head before addressing the group.

"If there is nothing else, I think this discussion is over," he said firmly, his tone leaving no room for argument. Without another word, he gazed at Claire and asked her to follow him.

"Come with me; I would like to have a chat with you and see how daring you are!" Evander said as he gestured for her to follow him.

The people in the room were stunned but Claire didn’t say anything and followed him outside,

As they walked away, Claire couldn’t help but feel her cheeks flush. She glanced at Evander, who looked as composed as ever. "Why do you keep doing that?" she asked in a hushed tone.

"Doing what?" he asked, feigning innocence but with a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his lips.

"You know what," she muttered, her grip tightening on his hand. "Making me look like some overly possessive wife."

Evander stopped walking and turned to her, his expression softening just slightly. "Because, Claire," he said, his voice low enough for only her to hear, "if they see you as strong, they will think twice before trying to hurt you."

Claire blinked, her heart skipping a beat as his words sank in. He gave her a faint, knowing smile before continuing forward, leaving her both flustered and confused.

"And this way... they will not dare come toward me and bother me," Evander said with a smug tone, his smirk widening as he glanced at Claire.

"Whatever!" Claire huffed, rolling her eyes dramatically. She turned her attention to Eliam, who was looking up at her with his big, innocent eyes. "Let me carry Eliam," she said, her voice softening.

Eliam shook his head vehemently, crossing his little arms in defiance. "No! Mommy can’t carry me!"

Claire raised an eyebrow, surprised at his sudden outburst. "And why not?" she asked, crouching slightly to look him in the eye. "Why can’t I carry you?"
