Claire’s POV

"I’m sorry, Claire. I didn’t know... I didn’t realize..." Evander stammered, trying to piece together the words that felt too late, too empty.

"You didn’t care!" I cut him off, my voice rising sharply, filled with the hurt I had been carrying for so long. "You didn’t care enough to notice, Evander! You didn’t care enough to be there! I was all alone, grieving for the child I lost, while you were with her. Her."

He stood there, his body shaking as he tried to form a response. His eyes, filled with tears now, told a story of regret, but I was too far gone. "I’m sorry," he whispered, his voice barely holding together. "I’m so, so sorry. If I could take it all back, I would. But I can’t... I can’t bring him back... I can’t undo the hurt I caused you."

Hearing him say those words made my chest tighten, but it wasn’t enough. The pain was still raw, still burning inside me. "Sorry isn’t enough," I whispered, though my words were cold. "It will never be enough. Do you even know what it’s like to lose a child, Evander? To lose a part of yourself and have no one there to hold you through it?"

His eyes were red, and he shook his head slowly, his gaze falling to the floor as if ashamed. "No," he admitted softly, his voice hoarse. "I don’t. I don’t know that pain, Claire. But I know I hurt you. I know I failed you when you needed me most. And I’ll carry that regret with me for the rest of my life."

I couldn’t hold it anymore. My legs felt weak, and I sank to the floor, the weight of everything coming back, crashing over me like waves I couldn’t escape. "I can’t do this anymore," I whispered, but it wasn’t just to him—it was to myself, to the universe. "I can’t keep holding on to this pain, to you, to a life that has only ever brought me heartache."

Evander kneeled down in front of me, his face etched with so much despair that it almost broke my heart. Almost. "I’m not asking for forgiveness, Claire," he said, his voice thick with guilt and sadness. "I know I don’t deserve it. But please... let me try to make it right. Let me be here for you now, to do whatever I can to ease your pain."

I looked into his eyes—those eyes that used to make me believe in forever, in something beautiful and hopeful. But now, all I saw was a man broken and shattered, just as I was. "You can’t fix this," I whispered, my voice barely audible as I shook my head. "You can’t bring back what’s gone."

Evander’s shoulders slumped, and he wiped his face with shaking hands, trying to compose himself, but the tears kept coming. "I know," he said softly, his words laced with sorrow. "But I’m not leaving this time. I’m staying. For you. For whatever is left of us."

I shook my head, more tears falling as I spoke, my heart breaking all over again. "There is nothing left, Evander. Nothing." My voice cracked as I spoke the truth I had been hiding from, but deep down, I knew it was real. Our love, our life together—it was gone, buried under the weight of our losses and mistakes.

Evander reached for my hands, but I pulled them away, refusing to let him touch me, refusing to let him in. "You can’t make this right," I said again, standing up slowly, feeling like every step was a struggle. "And I am done waiting for something that will never come."

With those final words, I turned away, leaving Evander kneeling there, his face a mixture of devastation and regret. But I couldn’t look back. I couldn’t turn around. I had suffered too much, lost too much. This was my time to heal—without him.

But even as I walked away, doubt lingered in my mind. Could I really heal without him? Could I ever move on from all the pain? These thoughts haunted me as I left the restaurant, with Sissy following close behind. She carried my bag and quickly booked a taxi for us, sensing the tension in the air.

Just when I thought the day was finally over, I saw her—Susan—walking toward us with that same smug look on her face.

"So, are you happy now?" Susan spat, her voice dripping with venom. "Are you satisfied after ruining everything between us?"

I glared at her, holding back the storm of emotions that was threatening to explode inside me. But I couldn’t let her get to me, not now. One thing was clear to me—Evander had no real relationship with her. It was all in her head, a twisted fantasy she had built up.

"Relationship?" I laughed bitterly, my voice laced with sarcasm. "Did you ever even have one?"

"What are you talking about?" Susan’s eyes widened as she took a step closer. "What did Evan tell you?"

"He doesn’t need to tell me anything," I shot back, my words sharp. "I have seen how he treats you. You are nothing but an office worker who’s trying to sleep her way to the top, using his family’s influence to push yourself into his life."

I didn’t hold back. Why should I? I was done being the weak, broken Claire who let people walk all over her. I was free now—free to speak my mind, free to fight back.

"So what?" Susan sneered, her eyes flashing with malice. "I am still by his side, and you’re not! I tore you two apart in the end!"

Her words were like knives, but I stood tall, refusing to let her see the hurt. She might think she won, but I was no longer the woman who let others define her. This time, I would define myself.
