The trip back to Zuian District was fleeting, and soon enough they arrived at the Zuian Guild. The guild master, Dion, was their top priority at the moment. The first thing they did after entering the guild building—was to pass through the door to the left of the receptionist that led to the guild master’s office.
"Stop, stop. The guild master is not innnnnn..."
Hu tried to stop them, but his warnings were the least of their concerns—they barged through the wooden door and headed straight towards the guild master’s desk.
Hu chased after them—he abandoned his position and asked his female colleague to take over for him. He didn’t want to risk losing his job or angering the guild master, or both.
Haruki slammed his hands against the desk. Dion sat behind it.
"If I had known you would pull such a trick or had an ulterior motive, I wouldn’t have accepted your offer." He let out a defeated sigh.
"Either way, there was a reason behind the mission, if not? Prove me wrong."
Haruki dropped the lost baby from Toru Village on the desk.
"Hu, you can leave," Dion ordered Hu to let them be.
"Yes, Guild Master." Hu bowed his head and closed the door after him.
Dion’s crimson eyes were immediately fixed on the child. A shallow smile sprouted upon his lips.
"I didn’t foresee that such an outcome would be possible. And yet that’s what disturbs me the most. Haruki Chen is an anomaly. Whether he’s dangerous or not, I will figure out in time."
Dion was quite surprised by the outcome of the cleansing mission in Toru Village—for reasons best known to him, Dion tagged Haruki as an anomaly.
The journey of this abandoned brother and son had just begun, and there was so much he would have to figure out already.
After a brief and unnoticeable delay, Guild Master Dion chose to answer Haruki.
"Lying now will just make me look stupid. Since you have already figured out this much, I might as well tell you the truth."
Dion stood and walked out from behind the desk.
"But first, why don’t you both have a seat?"
He pointed them towards the couch. Ariel picked Luno up from the desk and sat beside Haruki.
"Now that you are properly seated, I suppose I should start by answering the most pressing question."
Dion placed his butt on the desk and composed himself.
"And how could you possibly know the most pressing question on our minds?" Ariel raised a brow—she couldn’t agree to the whole mysterious reveal situation.
"Ehhh, I believe some questions are better left unanswered. Just like I won’t ask you where you came from?" Dion answered with a properly curated reply.
"Tsk..." She let out a defeated sigh.
"First and foremost, no, I did not one hundred percent know that you would find a special child in the village." His eyes fell on Haruki.
"I know you must be thinking I sent you to the village for my gain, that is, to bring the child to me, or should I say, Luno... if I wanted the child, I could easily have done it myself."
He spoke with confidence and left no room for errors that would build up doubt.
’So Luno wasn’t his primary focus? That means...’ Haruki at first thought that Dion simply sent them to the village to collect Luno for his own primary gain.
"About where the child came from...." Dion paused. "As far as I know, he might be the product of a forbidden experiment."
He quickly noticed the sudden change in Ariel’s facial expression.
"That, I am not aware of. Just look at me, do I strike you as the type to dabble in such evil acts?..."
At a fleeting moment of getting no reply, he chose to answer himself.
"Of course not," he said with full confidence.
"Let’s agree for now that you have no connection with the experiment that birthed Luno per se..." Haruki rubbed his temples.
"How about the villagers that were slaughtered—innocent women, men, and children all killed for what?" The annoyance he felt when he saw those dead bodies resurfaced, though minimal.
"You are the Guild Master of Zuian Guild. You can’t tell me that you were so helpless that you couldn’t send proper aid to that village."
Haruki asked the question that ached him the most.
Dion still maintained his calm and collected demeanor before letting out a slight chuckle.
"Even as the guild master, I still have to answer to the Imperium Throne and the Four Great Clans..."
"I’m sure the thought must already have crossed your mind before—" His crimson pupils constricted.
"The Four Great Clans aren’t as great as the masses make them out to be—"
"All I can say—Toru Village simply didn’t benefit them, at least not while it was still in one piece."
Dion leaned back on the desk and crossed his legs.
’This sly fox... he thinks throwing half-piece answers at me seems funny.’ Haruki hissed inwardly.
’Not to mention Ariel has been alerting me about the person that’s watching us from above.’
’Either way they don’t seem hostile. If not, I’m sure Dion would take action—maybe it’s probably an accomplice of his.’
"Thank you for your time, Guild Master. I would like my payment—"
The major bone of contention at the moment for Haruki was his pay. He didn’t have a single dime on him. He was presumed dead by his family—so all his bank accounts were frozen or deactivated.
"And a bank account," he added with a relatively serious look, even though a bank account was not part of the initial agreement.
"Interesting!" Dion laughed inwardly.
"I’ll give you one of the guild’s bank accounts. Don’t worry, it will auto-convert to your name, and you don’t have to provide any details if you don’t want to. Not even your last name. ’Haruki’ will do just fine."
"For the lady also, a bank account will be provided. I’ll email the details. Just give me the address."
Dion handed them one credit card each.
"I suppose you don’t have phones we can borrow or lend to us?" Haruki smiled weirdly.
Dion rolled his eyes—in this time and age, it was quite weird for people not to possess technological devices.
He dragged open a side drawer and dropped two phones on the desk.
"Here you go. I suppose you can operate a phone. Don’t worry about the SIM cards—they are already installed," he sighed.
"You can also stay at one of the guild’s affiliated inns for free—it’s a private suite, by the way." Dion gloated at the fact he was a multi-billionaire.
"Thank you for your generosity, Guild Master Dion," Haruki spoke with an unnervingly sweet tone.
"Huh?!" Ariel was completely dumbfounded.
"What do you want?" Dion tried to contain the outburst he was about to have with a smile.
"Luno.... Can you look after him for now?"
More or less, Dion couldn’t refuse his offer. Haruki was a cleanser; he certainly wouldn’t have time to take care of a child for now.
"Fine..." Dion collected Luno from Haruki’s hands.
"Can we really trust him?" Ariel whispered.
"Do we have a choice?" Haruki took a deep breath.
Just as Haruki and Ariel were about to step through the door, Dion called their attention.
"Haruki and Ariel, your promotion test will be in two weeks’ time—do well to prepare appropriately." He could have told them earlier, but he chose to catch them by surprise.
"Eh-Eh." Haruki stuttered.
"We hear you, little man." Ariel dragged Haruki out the door.
"Dion, you still haven’t changed a bit. Calling a half-truth, the truth, is quite the stretch even for me."
A shadow dropped from the ceiling and spoke with a feminine voice.
