"Haruki Chen, on behalf of that foolish old man we call father, who refuses to see your uselessness and is instead blinded by his so-called fatherly love for you. Weakest of the weakest, scummiest of scum, we renounce you as our brother. We cast you out like the trash you are... We revoke you, Haruki, for the bastard son that you are."
At the peak of a hill just above a corruption zone, Haruki’s elder twin brothers, Shuten and Ruten, loomed over him. Their faces were filled with irritation and pure hatred for him.
He was too stunned to even speak. The words that came out of Ruten’s mouth were something he found completely unbelievable—he knew they never liked him, but he never stopped to think that they would go this far.
"There’s that disgusting look in your eyes. Always feeling as if you are better than us just because you are daddy’s favourite," the eldest, Shuten, said with annoyance in his voice.
"No-No. I didn’t mean to—" Haruki stepped back to the very edge of the cliff.
"Stop the fucking pretence, little brother. You and I know that you can barely stand our presence. Even though we actually have talents, I don’t see what that old geezer actually sees in you."
"Don’t get me started on all those ladies that swarm you on a daily basis just because of your looks. Well, we are done with that, not to mention that I and big bro Shuten have decided to do you the honour of giving you a horrific death."
Ruten’s voice carried, stabbing like a dagger into the heart.
"But—but, big bro, there’s no need to go this far. I’m sure we can sort this out another way."
"I’m sorry, lil’ bro, but that option has long been exhausted. Don’t blame it on us, blame your weakness. Pathetic son of a bitch."
Ruten looked at him as if he were a piece of trash that had just stained his shoes.
Shuten placed a finger over Haruki’s chest. "This is our final gift to you.... I suggest you enjoy it."
He was pushed over the cliff by his brothers against his own will. The only thought that went through his mind during the fall, which felt like an eternity, was:
’What did I fucking do? I took their bullshit and managed to survive their constant bullying. And yet they chose to do this to me?’
A rhetorical question that he didn’t need an answer to.
Haruki crashed into the ground. His spine cracked, his limbs shattered, and worst of all, he was surrounded by hordes of bloodthirsty demons who were more than happy to devour his flesh and bones.
As he lay before death’s door, he began to reminisce about his life. Born without a talent and possessing useless attributes, he couldn’t even manage to perfect a trait, much less earn a cultivation star.
His father didn’t mind him being weak. In fact, he was his father’s favourite because Haruki was very good at giving him solid advice that none of his other children would bother to give.
His elder brothers soon grew jealous of him and made it their life’s mission to turn his life into a living hell. Haruki also possessed killer looks that made every lady who came across him want to lay in bed with him.
The more he was complimented, the more his jealous elder brothers increased the rate of their bullying. But he still endured with the hope that someday he would amass enough power to fight back.
As long as anyone could remember, this world had been plagued by demonic rot and demons, with the only way to fight back being cultivation. Certain individuals learned how to manipulate their inner Dao and external Dao through cultivating skills called traits.
Traits are skills that are acquired through understanding and constant training.
Later on, the existence of talents was discovered, as certain individuals possessed abilities that could quicken their cultivation of traits.
Every young man wished to be a powerful cultivator, but sadly, some were not allowed that privilege. A gruelling fact that Haruki came to realise.
His family, whom he expected to have his back, had just betrayed him, no less because of their own greed and jealousy. The dream he had always strived to attain had just gone up in flames.
He knew deep inside that he shouldn’t have trusted them, but he foolishly chose to give them the benefit of the doubt, which was about to lead him to his early grave.
Haruki tried to get up from the ground, but his body simply refused to respond. The demons kept getting closer and closer.
He forced himself upwards as a searing pain corroded his entire being. He had two options: either run or wait like a lamb ready to be slaughtered in the lion’s den.
He ran forward, springing his damaged limbs forward, not caring if they detached or not. The demons pursued him with speeds that far outclassed his own. Sooner or later, they were going to reach him.
Haruki stumbled upon a stone rock. He tripped over it, rolling on the ground until he hit his head against a wall. He fractured his skull, and soon blood came gushing out. He could only see blurry glimpses of the demons mid-air, just about to pounce on him.
’I guess this is the end.’
Just as the savage demons were about to pounce on him, a stream of fluttering crimson butterflies shredded the demons into countless pieces. The silhouette of a beautiful woman came into view, surrounded by fluttering crimson-red butterflies.
Her scarlet-red hair fluttered softly in the wind. She tilted her head slightly backwards, her dark crimson eyes looking as though they were peering into his soul.
"Are you the one who freed me?"
