The rising water forced the fight into a different shape entirely — no longer a contained skirmish in a flooded chamber, but a scrambling, chaotic scramble for footing as the altar’s reaction sent waves crashing against the cave walls with increasing violence.
"Fall back toward the entrance!" Haruki shouted, cutting down another operative as the water climbed past his waist. "If this whole chamber floods—"
A section of the ceiling gave way behind them with a groan of collapsing stone, sealing off the passage they’d entered through and separating Rosalia, mid-swing against two operatives, from the rest of the group in the span of a single heartbeat.
"Rosalia!" Ariel’s voice cracked with alarm.
"I’m fine, just—" Rosalia’s response cut off as a third operative emerged from the churning water directly behind her, weapon already descending toward an opening she hadn’t accounted for.
She twisted at the last second, catching the blow across her forearm instead of her spine, but the impact sent her stumbling backward against the chamber’s far wall, boots losing purchase on the rapidly shifting, water-slicked floor.
"Careful now." A new voice, calm and assured, cut through the chaos — a Kargekin operative distinct from the others, his armor marked with insignia the rest lacked, clearly the one directing this ambush from the shadows until now. "The others are little more than a delay tactic. I’m the one you should be worried about."
He moved with a speed that belied his heavier build, closing the distance before Rosalia could fully recover her footing, and the strike that followed cracked against her raised hammer with enough force to send visible fractures spidering through the weapon’s condensed Dao structure.
"That’s—" Rosalia grunted, absorbing the blow’s shock through her whole body, "—new."
"Dao-nullifying enchantment," the operative said, almost conversationally, pressing his advantage with a second strike that Rosalia barely deflected in time. "Standard Kargekin field equipment for engagements against cultivators relying too heavily on condensed techniques. You’d be amazed how many powerful opponents fall apart the moment their favorite weapon stops cooperating."
Rosalia’s hammer, already weakened, shattered entirely under the third strike, scattering into harmless pink motes that dissolved uselessly into the rising water around them.
"Rosalia!" Haruki’s voice, distant now, muffled by the collapsed passage separating them, carried unmistakable panic.
"I’m handling it!" she shouted back, though the confidence in her voice rang hollow even to her own ears as the Kargekin operative closed in, weapon raised for what was clearly meant to be a decisive follow-up.
She caught the blow bare-handed instead, the enchanted blade’s edge biting shallow but real into her palm, and for the first time since joining Haruki’s harem, genuine fear flickered behind her usual reckless bravado.
*This isn’t working. Whatever’s in that blade, it’s not just nullifying my Dao. It’s cutting through defenses I’ve never had tested before.*
The operative pressed the advantage, driving her back against the chamber wall with a relentless series of strikes, each one testing a different angle, probing for the moment her improvised defense finally broke down entirely.
"You fight well for someone whose primary tool just got taken away," he observed, almost admiring, as Rosalia ducked beneath a strike aimed at her throat. "Kargekin’s intelligence undersold you considerably. Pity that won’t matter in the end."
A final strike caught her across the ribs, sending her sprawling into the rising water, breath knocked from her lungs entirely as the operative loomed over her, weapon raised for what was unmistakably meant to be the finishing blow.
"Nothing personal," he said, almost gently. "Just business."
The blow never landed.
A blur of dark, furious motion slammed into the operative from the side, iron-hard fists driving into his chestplate with enough force to send him skidding backward across the flooded chamber floor, armor crumpling like paper under the impact.
"Touch her again," Isolde said, voice a low, dangerous growl as she rose from the crouch she’d landed in, dark hair plastered against her face, eyes blazing with a fury that hadn’t cooled in what was apparently several centuries of imprisonment, "and I promise you, business will be the last thing on your mind."
The operative scrambled upright, visibly shaken by the sudden, overwhelming force of the newcomer’s arrival. "Who—what—"
"Doesn’t matter who I am." Isolde’s grin was all teeth, feral and utterly without mercy. "What matters is you hurt someone I apparently already like, and I haven’t had a proper fight in longer than you can possibly comprehend."
She didn’t wait for a response. She simply attacked, and the sheer, relentless ferocity of her assault left the operative no room to recover, no room to reposition his Dao-nullifying blade for another calculated strike — only room to retreat, block, and eventually, inevitably, fall.
Rosalia watched, still catching her breath in the shallow water, as Isolde finished the operative with a final, brutal strike that ended the fight decisively.
"You okay?" Isolde asked, turning toward her, some of the battle-fury already draining from her expression into something closer to genuine concern.
"Better, now." Rosalia managed a weak grin despite the pain radiating through her ribs. "You’re new."
"Apparently." Isolde extended a hand, hauling Rosalia upright with easy strength. "Some idiot triggered an emergency release trying to save you, if the fragments of memory I’ve got are accurate. I woke up mid-air, already falling toward this fight."
"That idiot’s my Haruki-sama," Ariel’s voice called out, relief evident as the collapsed passage finally gave way under Nibel’s scythe, the rest of the group flooding back into the chamber. "And I’d say his timing worked out rather well."
Haruki reached Rosalia’s side in seconds, checking her over with visible, unhidden worry despite the ongoing chaos around them. "You’re hurt."
"I’ll live." Rosalia managed a tired but genuine smile. "Wouldn’t be the first time. Probably won’t be the last."
Isolde studied Haruki for a long moment, sizing him up with the same unrestrained directness she’d shown the fallen operative, before her mouth curved into something almost like approval.
"You’re the one who triggered the release," she said. It wasn’t a question.
"I am."
"Good instincts." She rolled her shoulders, testing the freedom of movement after so long bound. "I was starting to think I’d wake up to a war that had already ended without me. Glad to see that’s not the case."
Behind them, the chamber’s water finally began to recede as the altar’s reaction settled, the second Lougen fragment still pulsing steadily at its center, waiting to be claimed now that the immediate danger had passed.
"Welcome to the fight," Haruki said, offering Isolde a tired but genuine nod of acknowledgment. "I have a feeling we’re going to need every bit of that fury you’ve got saved up."
Isolde’s grin sharpened, feral and eager, and for the first time since the ambush began, something in the chamber’s tension finally, cautiously eased.
