Torren’s map proved accurate down to the smallest detail — three days of careful, covert scouting confirmed every guard rotation, every hidden entrance, every structural weakness he’d sketched from memory alone, and by the fourth day, the group stood at the edge of the disguised mining compound with a plan solid enough that even Thessaly’s exacting scrutiny found little to criticize.
"There’s one detail I haven’t been able to verify," Torren admitted, studying the compound’s distant silhouette with visible unease. "Corvin’s personal vault, where the recovered fragments are stored. I never had clearance to access it directly, even during my years with the organization. I only know its general location from overheard conversations."
"That’s the part that worries me," Sana said, adjusting her instruments to scan the compound from a safe distance. "A vault you can’t verify is a vault that might be exactly what it looks like on paper, or might be an elaborate trap designed to catch exactly the kind of infiltration we’re planning."
"We’ve weighed that risk already," Haruki said. "The question is whether we proceed anyway."
"We proceed," Nibel said flatly, already checking her scythe’s readiness. "Corvin’s compound, Corvin’s vault. I’m not passing up this opportunity regardless of the risk."
The infiltration went smoothly at first — Torren’s intelligence holding true through the outer perimeter, the guard rotations exactly where he’d predicted, allowing the group to slip through the compound’s disguised mining entrance with minimal resistance.
It was the vault itself where things went wrong.
"This isn’t right," Thessaly said, studying the vault door’s unusual, unfamiliar sealing mechanism the moment they reached it. "This construction doesn’t match anything in Torren’s description. This was built recently. Deliberately."
"Meaning?" Haruki asked, already feeling the cold prickle of instinct warning him something had shifted beneath their feet.
"Meaning," a new voice said, cold and amused, from the shadows beyond the vault chamber’s entrance, "that I anticipated Torren’s little crisis of conscience considerably before he acted on it."
Corvin stepped into view, flanked by a dozen armed operatives, his earlier composure replaced by something colder, more triumphant.
"You knew," Nibel said, voice tight with fury. "You knew Torren would defect."
"I encouraged it," Corvin said, almost gleeful. "An old man riddled with guilt makes for excellent bait, provided you feed him just enough real information to seem credible while withholding the details that actually matter. Congratulations, all of you. You’ve walked directly into precisely the trap I hoped you would."
Torren’s face had gone ashen, horror and shame warring across his weathered features. "I didn’t know," he said, voice cracking. "I swear, I had no idea—"
"Of course you didn’t," Corvin said, almost pitying. "That’s rather the point of a well-constructed trap, isn’t it? The bait rarely knows it’s bait."
The vault chamber’s walls, Haruki realized with dawning dread, weren’t simply walls at all — they were lined, floor to ceiling, with the same dark, jagged script he’d seen etched into the original Akiou vault, the entire chamber itself a containment mechanism waiting to be triggered.
"This entire room is a seal," Thessaly said grimly, arriving at the same realization. "We’re not standing in a vault. We’re standing in a cage."
"Clever girl," Corvin said, genuine appreciation in his voice despite the circumstances. "Though I’m afraid recognizing the trap and escaping it are rather different accomplishments."
He raised a hand, and the chamber’s walls flared to sudden, blinding life, dark energy converging inward from every direction at once, compressing the available space with terrifying speed.
"Everyone, together!" Haruki shouted, already gathering every harem member close, crimson Dao flaring in a desperate attempt to shield them all from the converging walls.
The compression hit like a physical wave, and for a horrifying moment, Haruki felt the air itself being crushed from his lungs, Ariel’s grip on his arm the only thing anchoring him against the disorienting, suffocating pressure.
Then, abruptly, a crack split through the compressing walls — not from anything the group had done, but from something else entirely, a sudden surge of violent, chaotic energy erupting from within the seal itself, as though the trap’s own construction had inadvertently disturbed something it was never meant to touch.
The walls shattered outward in a spray of dark, crumbling stone, and standing in the wreckage where the vault’s deepest chamber had been hidden, chains of ceremonial binding already fracturing around her wrists, a woman with sharp, knowing eyes and a smile that promised trouble in the most delightful possible sense surveyed the scene with open, delighted amusement.
"Well," she said, voice like silk poured over broken glass, "this is certainly a more interesting welcome than I expected after all these centuries."
Corvin’s triumphant expression shattered into open alarm. "That’s not supposed to be down here," he said, backing away from the newly revealed figure with genuine, unmistakable fear. "That chamber was sealed separately. It shouldn’t have—"
"Should haves rarely survive contact with reality, darling." The woman’s smile sharpened, dark eyes sweeping across the assembled group with frank, appraising interest before settling, with obvious and immediate delight, on Haruki. "And who do we have here? The one whose reckless little rescue attempt just happened to crack open my prison a few centuries ahead of schedule?"
"That would be me," Haruki managed, still catching his breath from the chamber’s near-collapse. "Sorry for the delay."
"Don’t apologize," she said, stepping closer with unhurried, predatory grace. "I’ve had three royal courts fall for considerably less charm than that. I’m Mireille. And I believe, given the circumstances of my rather dramatic release, that makes me yours now — whether Corvin’s little trap intended it or not."
Corvin, already backing toward the chamber’s exit with his remaining operatives, looked between Mireille and the rest of the group with the expression of a man watching his carefully constructed victory collapse in real time.
"This isn’t over," he snarled, before turning and fleeing entirely, his operatives scattering behind him.
Mireille watched him go with lazy, unbothered amusement. "He always did hate losing," she said, turning her full attention back to Haruki, dark eyes glittering with unmistakable interest. "I have a feeling you and I are going to get along beautifully."
Behind her, half-buried in the wreckage of the collapsed vault chamber, Haruki spotted a fourth fragment of Lougen, pulsing faintly amid the rubble — proof, if any more were needed, that even Corvin’s carefully laid trap had ultimately handed them exactly what they’d come here to find.
