Haruki scrambled up through the last of the collapsing passage with Thessaly close behind, emerging into the upper chamber just in time to see the Kargekin agent’s barrier finally shatter under a combined assault from Ariel’s butterflies, Rosalia’s hammer, and Vex’s bare-fisted fury.
"You’re outnumbered," Ariel said, breathing hard but standing firm, crimson essence still swirling around her staff. "And out of tricks, from the look of it."
"Outnumbered, perhaps." The agent straightened, dusting off his robes with an unbothered calm that made Haruki’s skin crawl. "Out of tricks is a bold assumption." His gaze flicked toward Haruki as he emerged, toward the fragment secured against his chest, and something like satisfaction crossed his expression despite the beating he’d just taken. "Ah. There it is. Thank you for retrieving that. Saves us the trouble."
"You’re not getting anywhere near it," Haruki said, closing the distance with the fragment held protectively behind him.
"I don’t need to touch it myself." The agent smiled, thin and unsettling. "I only needed it disturbed. Which, courtesy of your little expedition downward, it very much has been."
The chamber’s ancient script, still glowing faintly from the vault’s activation, suddenly flared bright, every etched line along the walls igniting in sequence like a fuse racing toward some inevitable conclusion.
"That’s not good," Sana said, backing away from the nearest wall as the glow intensified. "That’s really not good. This wasn’t in any of the resonance patterns I mapped—"
"Because you were mapping the seal meant to keep it in," the agent said, already retreating toward the exit shaft with unhurried steps, entirely unbothered by the escalating light show around them. "Not the ward meant to punish anyone foolish enough to remove a fragment without properly closing the seal behind them."
"Then close it!" Rosalia shouted.
"I’m afraid that’s rather the opposite of what my employers want." The agent paused at the shaft’s edge, glancing back with something almost like genuine amusement. "Consider this a parting gift, Haruki Chen. A taste of what’s coming, free of charge. Do try to survive it — Kargekin would find it terribly disappointing if you died before we’re finished with you."
He stepped backward into the shaft and vanished the same way his courtyard counterpart had, leaving the chamber’s glow building toward some unmistakable crescendo.
"Thessaly!" Haruki turned toward the newly freed Transcendent, who was already studying the escalating script with sharp, clinical focus despite the mounting danger. "What is this? What’s it doing?"
"Punitive ward," Thessaly said crisply, already moving toward the nearest wall to examine the glowing runes more closely. "Designed to inflict a proportional consequence for the seal’s violation. Given the scale of the etching and the speed of its activation, I’d estimate we have perhaps ninety seconds before it fully triggers."
"Triggers into what?" Ariel demanded.
"I don’t know yet. Give me a moment to actually read it instead of shouting questions at me." Thessaly’s tone carried no heat, only clipped, focused urgency, her eyes tracing symbol after symbol with inhuman speed. "...Ah. There it is. A localized corruption surge. Whatever remains of this vault’s original purpose, it’s designed to flood this chamber and everything connected to it with concentrated corrupted mana the moment the ward completes."
"How concentrated?" Nibel asked, already scanning the chamber for the fastest route back to the surface.
"Concentrated enough," Thessaly said, "that I would not recommend still being inside this structure when it happens."
"Then we run," Haruki said, already moving toward the exit, Sana’s arm looped over his shoulder to help her keep pace, the fragment still clutched tight against his chest. "Everyone, now!"
They sprinted back through the passage they’d descended hours earlier, the glow behind them building into a roar, the very air growing thick and acrid with the unmistakable taste of corruption gathering strength. Vex brought up the rear, glancing back more than once with an expression that suggested she was seriously considering whether outrunning this particular ward was even possible.
They burst back into the mural chamber just as the roar behind them crescendoed into a deafening crack, and Haruki didn’t dare look back to see what had happened to the ruins they’d just fled — he simply kept running, kept pulling Sana along, kept counting the steps back toward the surface stairwell until finally, finally, they broke out into the governor’s estate’s service corridor, lungs burning, ears ringing.
Behind them, muffled by layers of stone and distance, the ward’s activation finally ran its course — a deep, resonant shudder passing through the entire estate, dust sifting down from the ceiling, and then, gradually, silence.
For a long moment, nobody spoke, all of them simply breathing, taking stock of themselves and each other in the aftermath.
"Everyone accounted for?" Haruki finally managed, still catching his breath.
A chorus of tired affirmations answered him — Ariel leaning against the corridor wall, Rosalia rubbing at a fresh bruise along her forearm, Nibel already composing herself back into cool, unbothered stillness, Vex prowling in a tight circle like a caged animal working off leftover adrenaline, and Thessaly standing perfectly still, arms crossed, studying the sealed passage behind them with an expression of grim, calculating focus.
"That," Sana finally said, sliding down the corridor wall to sit heavily on the floor, "was significantly worse than anything my two years of research prepared me for."
"Welcome to the deep end," Rosalia said, managing a weak, exhausted grin despite everything.
Thessaly turned toward Haruki, her earlier clinical detachment giving way, just slightly, to something more serious.
"You should understand," she said quietly, "that what just happened was not the worst version of that ward. It was, in fact, a relatively contained response, given the scale of what Lougen’s fragments are actually capable of once reassembled. If Kargekin succeeds in gathering all of them, and someone triggers a ward on that scale—"
"It won’t be contained to one chamber," Haruki finished grimly.
"No," Thessaly agreed. "It won’t be contained to one prefecture, either."
The weight of that settled over the corridor like a physical thing, and Haruki found himself staring down at the fragment still clutched in his hand — small, dark, deceptively simple-looking for something capable of ending far more than just a village.
Somewhere beyond the estate’s walls, Akiou Prefecture carried on with its slow, exhausted recovery from the morning’s chaos, entirely unaware of how much closer to true catastrophe it had just come — and how much further the danger still had to climb before this was over.
