The governor’s estate sat at the far edge of Akiou Prefecture, untouched by the morning’s chaos except for the nervous energy radiating off every guard stationed along its walls. Haruki barely registered the architecture — his mind still turning over the boy’s wound, the branching black marks, the 94% match his system had flagged.
They didn’t make it inside.
Halfway across the estate’s outer courtyard, the ground beneath them cracked open in a spray of shattered cobblestone, and something vast and coiling erupted from underneath — not a beast this time, but a construct of writhing black chains, each link the size of a man’s torso, converging into a single towering shape with no clear head, no clear face, only a churning mass of iron and malice.
"Kargekin," a voice called from the estate’s rooftop, amused and utterly unbothered. A figure in dark, unmarked robes stood at the edge, watching the chain-construct unfold with the casual interest of someone watching rain fall. "Word of advice, cleansers. You really shouldn’t have killed our distraction so quickly. We hadn’t finished setting up yet."
"You’re the ones who sent that thing into the market?" Haruki’s voice came out low, dangerous.
"Sent, unleashed, encouraged — pick whichever verb helps you sleep at night." The figure’s tone stayed light, mocking. "Either way, you’re precisely where we wanted you. Consider this an introduction. My employers call themselves Kargekin. You’ll be hearing that name a great deal more before this is over."
The chain-construct lunged before anyone could respond, a dozen iron limbs converging on the group at once, faster than something that size had any right to move.
"Split!" Nibel barked, already folding a section of space to redirect the nearest strike, but even her fold groaned under the sheer mass bearing down on it, iron links screeching against the edges of the Hollow Between like a blade dragged across stone.
Ariel’s butterflies shredded through one limb, only for two more to lash out from where it had been. Rosalia’s hammer crushed a joint of chain into scrap, and the construct simply reformed the link from the debris scattered around it, patient and endless.
"It’s not alive," Haruki realized, blades forming in both hands as he dodged a crushing blow that cratered the cobblestone where he’d been standing a half-second before. "It’s just... hungry. It’ll keep coming until something actually ends it."
"Wonderful. Inspiring." Rosalia grunted, wrenching her hammer free from a chain link that had nearly swallowed it whole. "Any bright ideas, boss?"
He didn’t have one. Not yet. And that terrified him more than the construct itself — because for the first time since Toru Village, he could feel his own limits creeping up on him in real time, Dao reserves thinning faster than he could safely account for.
A chain limb caught Ariel across the side, sending her skidding into a shattered fountain, and something in Haruki’s chest cracked wide open.
"No—"
Instinct took over before thought could catch up. His hand thrust forward, crimson Dao surging out in a desperate, unrehearsed motion, and the system — which had been eerily silent since its earlier notice — flared to sudden, blinding life.
[EMERGENCY PROTOCOL TRIGGERED]
[Release chances insufficient for standard activation. Overriding via host’s critical Dao expenditure.]
[Double release initiated.]
Two circles bloomed against the cracked courtyard stone, one crimson, one a deep, bruised violet, both spinning faster than any release Haruki had triggered before.
"Haruki-sama, what did you—"
"I don’t know!" he shouted back, honestly, watching the violet circle pulse with an energy that felt distinctly angrier than anything Ariel or Nibel’s release had carried.
The chain-construct lunged again, and this time something intercepted it mid-strike — a blur of motion too fast to properly track, a flash of dark hair and darker eyes, and then the sound of iron shattering like glass.
The construct’s lead limb lay in pieces across the courtyard, and standing in the wreckage, one hand still extended from the strike that had done it, was a woman with a wild, feral grin stretched across her face.
"Oh," she said, voice rich with delight, rolling her shoulders like she was testing muscles she hadn’t used in centuries, "now this is a proper welcome back."
"Who—" Haruki started.
"Lady Vex," she said, not bothering to look at him yet, eyes fixed hungrily on the reforming construct. "Bound for the crime of ending a war a little too thoroughly. They called it a kingdom-ending atrocity. I called it a Tuesday." Her grin widened as the construct lashed out again, and this time she met the strike head-on, catching a chain limb bare-handed and simply tearing it apart with raw, joyful force. "And whoever built this glorified pile of scrap clearly didn’t do their research, because I eat things like this for breakfast."
"Vex!" Haruki called, some instinct telling him this newly freed Transcendent needed at least a little direction before she leveled the entire courtyard. "Left flank! Ariel’s pinned down!"
Vex’s dark eyes flicked toward him for the first time, appraising, delighted. "Giving orders already? Bold." She was moving before she finished speaking, a streak of motion that put her between Ariel and the next crushing strike with time to spare, catching the chain limb and simply ripping it free of the construct’s main body with a sound like a tree being uprooted.
"Thanks," Ariel gasped, scrambling upright, staring at the newcomer with wide, startled eyes.
"Don’t thank me yet, sweetheart. I haven’t decided if I like sharing." Vex’s grin turned sideways, sly and amused, before she pivoted and drove both fists into the construct’s central mass with enough force to send cracks spiderwebbing through what remained of it.
Between Vex’s raw, unrestrained power and the rest of the group finally regaining their footing, the chain-construct’s remaining limbs came apart in short order — Rosalia’s hammer finishing the central mass with one final, decisive blow that scattered iron fragments across the ruined courtyard.
On the rooftop above, the robed Kargekin agent clapped, slow and mocking.
"Well. That’s certainly one way to make an introduction." He inclined his head, almost respectful. "Enjoy your new addition, Haruki Chen. You’ll need every hand you can get."
Before anyone could react, he simply stepped backward off the roof’s edge — and vanished into thin air before he hit the ground, leaving nothing behind but the echo of his laughter and a courtyard full of scattered iron and heavy breathing.
Vex rolled her shoulders again, surveying the wreckage with obvious satisfaction, then finally turned her full attention on Haruki, looking him over with an intensity that made him distinctly aware of how disheveled and exhausted he must look.
"So." She stepped closer, entirely unbothered by personal space, tilting her head as she studied him. "You’re the one reckless enough to trigger an emergency double-release just to save your friend. Audacious." Her grin turned sharp, delighted, something predatory glinting behind her eyes. "I like audacious."
"Glad I could... impress you," Haruki managed, still catching his breath.
"Oh, you’ve done more than that." Vex’s smile widened, and for the first time since the chains had erupted from the ground, genuine amusement crackled through the tension. "You’ve made this a great deal more interesting than I expected waking up to."
Behind her, Nibel and Rosalia exchanged a look — the kind that suggested this newest addition to their ranks was going to complicate things in ways none of them were quite prepared for.
"Welcome to the harem," Rosalia said dryly. "Try not to break anything else before dinner."
Vex laughed, low and delighted, and the sound of it echoed strangely across the ruined courtyard — equal parts warning and promise.
