Word of the vault beneath Akiou Prefecture reached the Four Great Clans faster than anyone could have anticipated, and with it came a delegation Haruki hadn’t expected to deal with quite so soon.
"Lord Haruki Chen." The woman who swept into the governor’s war room wore the deep violet robes of the Argil Clan, her escort of six armored attendants filling the doorway behind her with quiet, deliberate menace. "I am Consul Meiying Argil, representing His Majesty’s interests in this prefecture. I trust you understand why I’m here."
"I can guess." Haruki didn’t rise from his seat at the war table, a small act of defiance that clearly registered on the consul’s carefully neutral face. "The vault. And whatever’s inside it."
"Precisely." Meiying’s eyes swept the room, cataloging the assembled group with obvious calculation — Thessaly’s diagrams still spread across the table, Sana’s instruments humming quietly in the corner, and the harem members arranged around the room in postures that made it very clear this was not a delegation anyone here intended to be intimidated by. "Two sacred fragments of an artifact predating guild records, discovered within a single prefecture in the span of a week. I’m sure you can appreciate why His Majesty’s court finds that... noteworthy."
"Noteworthy," Sana repeated flatly. "That’s certainly one word for a discovery that’s already gotten cleansers killed and nearly cost us two fragments to a hostile organization actively hunting them down."
"Which is precisely why the Imperium Throne believes this matter is better handled with proper resources and oversight," Meiying said smoothly, "rather than left to an unranked ’No Name’ sect operating without official sanction or accountability."
The insult landed exactly as intended, and Haruki felt the temperature in the room drop several degrees despite nobody moving.
"Careful," Vex said, arms crossed, her earlier feral energy simmering just beneath a thin veneer of civility. "Some of us don’t respond well to being talked down to."
"I meant no disrespect," Meiying said, though her tone suggested otherwise. "Merely an observation of fact. Your group has no official standing, no guild rank commensurate with the scale of what you’ve stumbled into, and frankly, no jurisdiction to be conducting this investigation at all."
"We didn’t stumble into anything." Haruki finally stood, meeting the consul’s gaze directly. "We were sent here by Guild Master Dion on an official cleansing mission, which escalated the moment Kargekin decided to announce themselves with a corrupted beast in the middle of a market district. Everything since then has been us cleaning up a mess that was already here before we arrived."
"A mess that now includes two fragments of an artifact capable of reassembling into something with the power to reshape entire regions." Meiying’s composure didn’t crack, but something sharper flickered behind her eyes. "The Imperium Throne cannot, in good conscience, allow such a dangerous asset to remain in the custody of an unsanctioned group, regardless of how capable you may have proven yourselves in the field."
"So what are you proposing?" Thessaly asked, her clinical tone cutting through the mounting tension with characteristic bluntness. "That we simply hand over both fragments and walk away, trusting the Imperium Throne to succeed where we’ve already made significant progress?"
"I’m proposing a formal transfer of custody, yes." Meiying’s gaze flicked toward Thessaly, assessing this newest, unfamiliar face with open curiosity before returning to Haruki. "Along with an official commendation for your assistance thus far, and appropriate compensation for your trouble."
"Compensation." Rosalia’s laugh held no humor at all. "That’s rich, considering we’re the ones who actually bled for those fragments."
"The offer stands regardless of your feelings on the matter." Meiying’s tone hardened, finally, the diplomatic veneer thinning to reveal something colder underneath. "I’d strongly recommend accepting it graciously. The alternative involves considerably less pleasant conversations with people who outrank both of us considerably."
The threat hung in the air, unmistakable despite its polite phrasing, and Haruki found himself weighing the situation with a clarity that surprised him — not fear, but calculation, the same cold focus that had carried him through every crisis since the cliff.
"Here’s my counter-offer," he said finally, voice level despite the tension coiling through the room. "We keep the fragments, because we’re the ones who’ve actually been tracking Kargekin’s movements and understand what we’re dealing with. In exchange, we share intelligence with the Imperium Throne — everything we know about Kargekin’s operations, their apparent goals, their known operatives. You get the information you need to protect your interests. We get to keep operating without interference from people who’ve shown up two years late to a problem we’re already solving."
Meiying’s expression remained carefully neutral, though the calculation behind her eyes was unmistakable.
"That’s a significant deviation from what I was authorized to negotiate," she said slowly.
"Then I suggest you send word back to whoever authorized you and get updated instructions," Haruki said, "because that’s the only offer on the table. We’re not handing over fragments to an organization that’s shown zero interest in this problem until two artifacts surfaced worth fighting over."
The room held its breath for a long, tense moment, Meiying’s gaze locked with Haruki’s in a silent contest neither seemed willing to concede first.
"I’ll relay your counter-proposal," she said finally, tone clipped, controlled. "Though I should warn you, Lord Haruki Chen, that patience for unsanctioned groups operating outside official channels tends to run thin among certain factions of the court. I’d advise resolving this Kargekin matter quickly, before someone with less patience than myself decides a more... direct approach is warranted."
"Duly noted," Haruki said, unmoved.
Meiying turned to leave, her escort falling into step behind her, but paused at the war room’s threshold, glancing back with an expression that had shifted, subtly, from cold calculation into something almost like grudging respect.
"For what it’s worth," she said, "the reports of your conduct during the market district incident were... impressive. It’s a pity you’ve chosen to spend that goodwill sparring with the Imperium Throne instead of leveraging it."
"I’m not spending goodwill," Haruki said quietly. "I’m protecting people who’ve already bled enough for a cause the Throne only just noticed."
Something flickered across Meiying’s face — not quite agreement, but not quite disagreement either — before she turned and swept out of the room, her attendants trailing silently behind her.
The war room exhaled collectively once the door closed, tension bleeding out of the assembled group in a ragged wave.
"That," Sana said, sinking into a chair, "was either the boldest or the stupidest thing I’ve watched someone do in front of an Imperium Consul."
"Bit of both, probably," Rosalia said, though her grin suggested genuine admiration rather than concern.
Thessaly studied Haruki for a long moment, her expression unreadable behind its usual clinical mask, before offering the barest hint of a nod.
"That was, tactically speaking, a reasonably sound gambit," she said. "Provided the Imperium Throne doesn’t call your bluff."
"It wasn’t a bluff," Haruki said quietly, sitting back down at the war table, the weight of what he’d just done to a Great Clan’s official representative settling heavily across his shoulders. "I meant every word of it. We’ve come too far to hand this off to people who’ll bury the truth about Toru Village the same way that governor tried to bury the vault."
Ariel’s hand found his shoulder, steady and reassuring. "Then we’d better make sure Kargekin doesn’t get the chance to prove her right about needing a ’more direct approach,’" she said quietly.
Outside the war room’s windows, Akiou Prefecture’s afternoon light slanted gold across rooftops still scarred from the market district’s destruction — and somewhere beyond the horizon, Haruki knew, both Kargekin and the Imperium Throne were already recalculating their next moves in response to what had just happened in this room.
