The evacuation checkpoint at the edge of the market district had turned into a makeshift triage zone by the time Haruki reached it, guild healers moving between rows of wounded with the kind of grim efficiency that came from having done this too many times before.
"Over here!" A woman’s voice, raw from screaming, cut through the chaos. "Please, someone, my son—"
Haruki turned toward the sound before he’d consciously decided to. A boy, no older than seven or eight, lay curled against a collapsed stall, one leg bent at an angle that made Haruki’s stomach lurch, dark fissures already creeping up from the wound like ink bleeding into water.
"Move!" He dropped to his knees beside the boy, ignoring the healer already crouched there who opened her mouth to protest. "Copy: Rejuvenation."
Crimson-gold light spread from his palms into the boy’s leg, and for a moment nothing happened — the fissures kept spreading, dark and stubborn, resisting the healing Dao the way a stain resists water.
"It’s not taking," the healer said quietly. "We’ve tried three different restoration techniques already. Whatever’s in that wound, it’s actively fighting anything that isn’t corruption itself."
Haruki’s jaw tightened. He pushed harder, forcing more of his reserves into the technique, and slowly, agonizingly, the black fissures began to recede, the boy’s ragged breathing evening out as color returned to skin gone pale with shock.
"There," Haruki said, sitting back, sweat beading at his temple from the effort. "He’ll live. Keep him still for the next hour, don’t let him walk on that leg."
The boy’s mother sobbed her thanks, but Haruki barely heard her. His attention had already snagged on the wound itself, now closed but leaving behind a faint discoloration in the skin — a pattern of thin, branching lines, almost like frost, almost like veins.
Almost exactly like the marks he’d seen on villagers’ bodies in Toru Village, in the hours before he’d finally put an end to the demon that made them.
"Haruki-sama?" Ariel’s hand found his shoulder. "You’ve gone pale."
"It’s the same," he said quietly, still staring at the fading marks on the boy’s leg. "Not similar. The same pattern, down to the branching angles. I helped bury the people who had marks just like this."
"Corruption doesn’t usually repeat itself with that kind of precision," Ariel said carefully. "Not naturally."
"No." His voice had gone flat, distant, the way it always did when the past reached up and grabbed him by the throat. "It doesn’t."
He stood, and for a moment the noise of the triage zone around him — the moans of the wounded, the shouted names, the crackle of the last stubborn fires — seemed to recede into a dull roar, replaced by an old, familiar memory: his brothers’ faces at the edge of a cliff, the wind screaming past him as he fell, the demons closing in below.
*This is our final gift to you.*
He hadn’t thought about that day in weeks. Now it sat behind his eyes like a splinter, refusing to be ignored.
"Haruki." Nibel’s voice, sharper than usual, cut through the memory. "You’re clenching your fists hard enough to draw blood."
He looked down. She was right — thin crescents of red welled up where his nails had bitten into his palms. He forced his hands open, forced his breathing to slow.
"Sorry." He exhaled shakily. "I’m fine."
"You’re not," Rosalia said bluntly, arms crossed despite the makeshift bandage now wrapped around her shoulder. "And that’s fine. We’re not gonna pretend you are just because it’s easier."
"This isn’t the time—"
"It’s exactly the time." Ariel’s voice was gentle but unyielding, stepping in front of him so he had no choice but to look at her instead of the middle distance. "Haruki-sama. Whatever this is, whatever it’s dredging up — you don’t have to carry it alone. That’s the whole point of us being here."
He stared at her for a long moment, throat tight, the noise of the triage zone slowly bleeding back into his awareness.
"They pushed me off a cliff," he said quietly, the words coming out rougher than he intended, "and told me it was a gift. And now I’m standing in the middle of a slaughtered market, looking at wounds that match the ones that killed an entire village, and some part of me keeps asking why. Why does it always come back to this. Why can’t it just be over."
Nobody answered right away. The wind shifted, carrying smoke and the distant sound of guild officials still shouting orders across the ruined district.
"Because it’s not over," Nibel said finally, quiet but certain. "Not yet. But you’re not standing here alone trying to answer that, Haruki. You’ve got three people, at minimum, who intend to help you find out why — and I suspect, given how this day started, we’re about to gain a few more before it’s finished."
Rosalia snorted, some of her usual bravado creeping back into her voice despite the grim mood. "She’s got a point. Feels like the kind of day the system loves throwing surprises at us."
As if summoned by the words themselves, a familiar cerulean panel flickered to life in the corner of Haruki’s vision.

[The host’s Copy talent has flagged a recurring pattern. Recommend further investigation.]
"Well," Haruki said, some grim humor finally cracking through the weight in his chest, "at least the system agrees with us for once."
"Even a broken clock," Nibel muttered.
A guild official, harried and soot-streaked, jogged up to them before Haruki could respond further. "You’re the cleansers who put down the beast?"
"That’s us," Haruki said, straightening, forcing the old memory back down where it belonged for now — not gone, never quite gone, but manageable.
"The prefecture governor wants to see you immediately. And—" the official hesitated, glancing over his shoulder as though worried about being overheard, "—there’s someone from the Cultivator Guild’s investigative division already here. Says it’s urgent. Says it’s about more than just the beast."
Ariel’s eyes met Haruki’s, some unspoken understanding passing between them.
"Of course it is," Haruki said, and started walking before the official could finish leading the way. Whatever waited for them in Akiou Prefecture was clearly bigger than one corrupted beast — and if the marks on that boy’s leg were any indication, it was a great deal closer to the wound he’d carried since Toru Village than he was ready to admit.
Behind him, Ariel, Nibel, and Rosalia fell into step without a word, and for the first time since the memory of the cliff had resurfaced, some of the tightness in his chest finally began to ease.
