Three days passed before Kargekin made their next move — three days the group spent recovering, fortifying the governor’s estate against further incursions, and listening to Thessaly methodically catalog everything she knew about Lougen’s fragmented history.
"Seven fragments total, as far as the old records I have access to indicate," Thessaly explained, spreading a hand-drawn diagram across the war room table Sana had commandeered for their planning sessions. "We’ve secured one. Kargekin’s activity pattern over the past two years suggests they’ve already gathered at least two others, possibly three."
"So we’re behind," Rosalia summarized, arms crossed.
"Considerably." Thessaly didn’t soften the assessment. "Which means our approach needs to shift from reactive to proactive. I’ve cross-referenced known corruption incident locations against ley line convergence points across the Yuxian continent. There are four other likely fragment locations within a week’s travel of Akiou Prefecture."
"Four," Haruki repeated. "And Kargekin’s had two years’ head start on all of them."
"Yes." Thessaly’s tone remained crisp, unbothered by the grim math. "Which is why I’d recommend moving on the nearest one immediately, rather than continuing to wait for them to come to us."
The nearest location, according to Thessaly’s diagram, was a half-collapsed watchtower on Akiou Prefecture’s northern border — abandoned for decades, officially attributed to a landslide, though the resonance pattern Sana’s instruments picked up from a distance suggested otherwise.
They arrived at dusk, the watchtower’s silhouette jagged and broken against a bruised orange sky, and the moment they crossed its threshold, Nibel went rigid.
"Nibel?" Ariel’s hand found her shoulder, concerned. "What is it?"
"I know this place." Nibel’s voice had lost its usual dry, unbothered edge, replaced by something tighter, older. "Or I know what used to be here, before it collapsed. This was a Kargekin holding site. Centuries ago."
"You’ve been here before?" Haruki asked carefully.
"Not here, exactly." Nibel’s gaze swept the ruined interior, purple eyes distant, tracking memories rather than the physical space in front of her. "But sites like it. Before I was sealed away, I ran with people who thought Kargekin’s predecessors were an acceptable price to pay for power. I was one of them, for a time. Longer than I’d like to admit."
The confession landed heavy in the ruined tower, and for a moment nobody spoke.
"You were part of Kargekin?" Rosalia asked, careful, not accusatory.
"Part of what would become them, eventually. Under a different name, different leadership." Nibel’s jaw tightened. "I left when I realized what they actually wanted the fragments for. That decision is the entire reason I ended up imprisoned in the first place — my former associates made certain the Prison World’s gatekeepers heard a very convincing story about how dangerous and untrustworthy I’d become."
"They set you up," Haruki said slowly.
"They removed a liability," Nibel corrected, flat and precise. "I knew too much, and refused to keep quiet about where the fragments were being taken. Centuries of imprisonment was their solution to that problem."
A voice, smooth and mocking, answered from the tower’s shadowed upper level before anyone could respond further.
"Nibel. It really has been a long time."
A figure descended the tower’s broken stairs unhurried, cloaked in the same dark, unmarked robes as the prior Kargekin agents, though this one moved with an unmistakable familiarity toward Nibel specifically — the posture of an old colleague rather than a stranger.
"Corvin," Nibel said, and the single syllable carried more venom than Haruki had ever heard from her.
"You remember me. I’m flattered." The man — Corvin — descended the last few steps, studying the group with lazy, unbothered interest before his gaze settled back on Nibel. "You look well, for someone who spent centuries in a cage. I always did wonder if the isolation would break that famous composure of yours."
"It didn’t." Nibel’s scythe materialized in her grip, dark and humming. "But I’m sure you’re about to give me a reason to test whether yours holds up better."
"Ever the dramatist." Corvin’s smile didn’t waver, though his eyes flicked, briefly, toward the fragment secured in Haruki’s satchel. "I’m not here to relitigate old grievances, Nibel. I’m here for the same reason I imagine you are — this tower’s fragment. Though I confess, finding you attached to this particular group is an unexpected bonus."
"You’re the one who orchestrated my imprisonment," Nibel said, voice gone dangerously flat. "That’s not a grievance. That’s a debt. And I intend to collect."
"If you insist on framing it that way." Corvin spread his hands, unbothered, dark energy already coiling around his fingers. "Though I should warn you, I’ve had several centuries to refine my methods since our falling out. I doubt you’ll find me quite so easy to outmaneuver this time."
"We’ll see."
Nibel moved before he finished speaking, scythe carving a vicious arc meant to end the confrontation before it properly began — but Corvin’s dark energy solidified into a barrier at the last possible instant, deflecting the strike with practiced ease.
"Careful," he said, almost gently, as the rest of the group fell into position around them, weapons ready. "Anger makes you predictable. You used to know that better than anyone."
"And you used to have the decency to fight your own battles," Nibel shot back, already pressing forward with a second strike, "instead of hiding behind fabricated evidence and a Prison World’s bureaucracy."
Haruki watched the exchange with growing unease, recognizing in Nibel’s controlled fury something he understood intimately — the particular, corrosive rage of betrayal by people who were supposed to know better, supposed to matter.
"Ariel, Rosalia, Vex — perimeter," he said quietly, already moving to back Nibel up rather than let her face this alone. "This one’s ours to finish."
Vex’s grin turned sharp and eager despite the tension in the room. "Finally. I was starting to think this trip was all diagrams and no fighting."
Corvin’s gaze flicked toward the reinforcements, and for the first time, something like genuine calculation crossed his previously unbothered expression.
"How many Transcendents have you managed to collect, exactly?" he asked, backing a step despite himself. "I was under the impression Kargekin’s intelligence on you was current."
"Guess your intelligence needs an update," Haruki said, twin blades forming in his hands as he closed the distance alongside Nibel. "Feel free to relay that back to whoever’s actually in charge. Assuming you survive long enough to."
Corvin’s smile finally faltered, just slightly, dark energy gathering thicker around him as he realized, perhaps for the first time, exactly how outmatched his position had become.
"We’ll finish this conversation another time, then," he said, already backing toward the tower’s shadowed depths. "Nibel. It really has been good to see you again."
"Don’t you dare run," Nibel snarled, lunging after him — but the shadows swallowed him whole a half-second before her scythe could connect, leaving nothing behind but empty air and the fading echo of his voice.
The tower fell silent, broken only by Nibel’s ragged, furious breathing.
"He’s gone," Rosalia said quietly, lowering her hammer. "Nibel—"
"I heard you." Nibel’s scythe dissolved back into shadow, her composure visibly, deliberately reassembling itself even as her hands trembled at her sides. "I’m fine."
Ariel’s eyes met Haruki’s over Nibel’s shoulder, both of them silently agreeing on the same unspoken thought — that whatever debt Nibel intended to collect from Corvin, it was far from settled, and far from over.
The fragment, at least, remained secure, tucked beneath a collapsed section of the tower’s foundation, waiting for them to finish retrieving it once the tension in the room finally allowed for it.
