The voice belonged to a man who stepped out of the chamber’s shadows with the unhurried confidence of someone who considered the entire situation already decided in his favor — tall, dressed in the same unmarked dark robes as the courtyard agent from the day before, though this one carried himself with far more restraint, far more calculation.
"Kargekin," Haruki said, crimson Dao flaring brighter in his palm. "You’ve got about three seconds to explain why I shouldn’t end this conversation before it starts."
"Direct. I appreciate that in a man who’s clearly exhausted." The agent’s gaze flicked, almost lazily, toward the pulsing fragment on its pedestal. "But you misunderstand the situation. I’m not here to fight you. I’m here to collect what’s mine, and I’d genuinely prefer to do that without further bloodshed today."
"Funny," Rosalia said, hammer already reforming in her grip, "given yesterday’s opening pitch was a rampaging corrupted boar and a construct made of angry chains."
"Yesterday was a demonstration," the agent said simply. "Today is a negotiation. Or it would be, if negotiation were actually on the table — which, regrettably, it isn’t." His hand moved, almost casually, toward the fragment’s pedestal.
Sana’s instruments screamed a warning half a second before the chamber’s floor buckled beneath them, a second seal — hidden, layered beneath the first — activating in response to the agent’s proximity to the fragment.
"He’s triggering something!" Sana shouted, scrambling backward as cracks split across the ancient stone in jagged, spreading lines.
"Then let’s make sure he doesn’t get the chance to finish," Haruki snapped, already moving, twin blades forming as he closed the distance toward the agent and the pedestal both.
The agent didn’t retreat. He simply raised one hand, and a barrier of dense, shimmering black energy snapped into place between himself and Haruki’s charging blades, absorbing the impact with barely a shudder.
"You’ll want to be careful," the agent said, almost gently, as the chamber’s cracks widened further, dust and debris raining down from a ceiling Haruki still couldn’t see the top of. "This vault wasn’t built to be entered lightly. Every disturbance triggers deeper wards. I’d hoped to retrieve the fragment before any of that became relevant, but since you’ve forced my hand—"
The floor gave way entirely beneath the pedestal, and both the fragment and a section of ancient stone dropped away into a newly revealed shaft descending even further into darkness.
"No!" Sana lunged toward the collapsing floor, too late, watching in real time as weeks of careful theory threatened to disappear into the dark along with the fragment itself.
Haruki didn’t hesitate. He dove after it, crimson Dao wrapping around his limbs to slow the fall, chasing the tumbling fragment down through churning dust and collapsing rubble.
The second chamber he landed in was smaller, older, its walls lined not with murals this time but with row upon row of sealed stone tablets, each one radiating the same faint, unsettling resonance as the fragment now skidding to a stop a few feet from where he’d landed.
He reached for it — and a voice, cold and precise, cut through the settling dust before his fingers closed around the metal.
"I would not touch that if I were you. Not without understanding what it’s attached to first."
Haruki froze, hand hovering an inch from the fragment, and turned toward the voice’s source.
A woman stood among the rows of sealed tablets, pale and still as though she’d been carved from the same stone surrounding her, dark hair falling in a severe, precise line around a face that radiated cold, exacting intelligence even in complete stillness. Thin chains, ceremonial rather than restraining, wrapped loosely around her wrists and throat — the unmistakable mark of another Transcendent, bound and waiting.
"You’re one of them," Haruki said slowly. "One of the imprisoned Transcendents."
"Correct assessment, though hardly a difficult one to reach." Her voice carried the flat, unimpressed cadence of someone permanently, mildly disappointed in the intelligence of everyone around her. "I am Thessaly. I have been sealed in this chamber for reasons that, ironically, are directly relevant to the object you were about to grab without any apparent understanding of its function."
Above them, the sound of the ongoing confrontation between the Kargekin agent and the rest of the group filtered down faintly through the collapsed ceiling — Rosalia’s furious shout, the crackle of Ariel’s Dao, Vex’s delighted, feral laugh.
"I don’t have time for a lecture," Haruki said, though something in Thessaly’s exacting stillness made him hesitate anyway. "That fragment is called Lougen, and an organization called Kargekin wants it badly enough to level a village to find pieces of it."
"Obviously." Thessaly’s dark eyes flicked toward the fragment with something that might have been contempt, might have been old, buried grief. "Lougen was never meant to exist as fragments in the first place. It was broken deliberately, by people wiser and more frightened than either of us, because whole, it functions as a key capable of locating anyone bound by a specific bloodline resonance."
Haruki’s blood ran cold.
"Locating," he repeated carefully, "or reassembled, will it work as a weapon too?"
"A key is rarely just a key," Thessaly said, studying him now with something sharper, more assessing, as though she’d caught the flicker of fear crossing his expression and filed it away for later analysis. "Whoever Kargekin is hunting, whatever bloodline they’re chasing, I’d advise you find them and protect them before Lougen’s fragments finish reassembling. Because once that happens, distance will no longer be a defense."
The ceiling above them groaned, another section of stone giving way, and Haruki made his decision in the span of a single heartbeat.
"System," he said quietly, though he already suspected what answer he’d get. "Can I release her?"
[Release chances: 0. Reset timer: active.]
[However — critical proximity detected. Emergency override available at severe Dao cost.]
"Do it."
The crimson and violet circles bloomed again beneath his feet, faster and hungrier than either of his prior releases, and Thessaly’s chains dissolved into drifting motes of pale light the instant the technique completed, her expression shifting from cold assessment to something almost, faintly, surprised.
"Well." She flexed her freed wrists, studying them with clinical curiosity rather than any visible joy. "That was considerably less ceremony than I expected for an unbinding. You didn’t even ask my opinion on the matter."
"Did you want me to leave you down here?" Haruki asked, already moving to help her toward the collapsing exit as the chamber continued groaning around them.
"No," Thessaly admitted, falling into step beside him with brisk, efficient strides despite centuries of imprisonment weighing behind her every movement. "But I do appreciate being consulted before decisions that reshape my entire existence. I’ll allow it this once, given the circumstances." Her gaze cut sideways toward him, sharp and evaluating. "You’re going to need someone who actually understands what Lougen does and why Kargekin wants it badly enough to slaughter villages. Fortunately for you, that happens to be precisely my area of expertise."
Above them, the fighting had reached some kind of crescendo — and as Haruki scrambled back up through the ruined chambers with Thessaly at his side, Lougen’s fragment secured against his chest, he found himself hoping, fiercely, that whatever was happening up there hadn’t already gone catastrophically wrong.
