Morning light hadn’t yet reached the underground chamber when Haruki returned to it, though he doubted the sun ever properly touched this place at all — the mural’s painted war seemed to swallow whatever light the lanterns offered, leaving the chained figure at its center perpetually half-shrouded in shadow.
"You’re up early," Sana observed, not looking up from the array of instruments she’d set around the sealed door’s perimeter overnight. "Or you didn’t sleep."
"Bit of both," Haruki admitted, though the truth was closer to the latter. Ariel’s company the night before had steadied him more than he’d expected, but the vault’s presence lingered at the edge of his thoughts regardless, a low hum of wrongness he couldn’t quite shake.
"I’ve been running comparative analysis against the guild’s oldest archived seals since dawn." Sana gestured at the scattered instruments, each one connected by thin threads of glowing mana to the door’s etched surface. "This script isn’t just old. It predates the earliest guild founding records by at least three centuries, possibly more."
"So who built it?" Ariel asked, arriving with Nibel and Rosalia close behind, Vex trailing at the rear with the loose, prowling gait of someone still testing the boundaries of a body she hadn’t used freely in a very long time.
"That’s the question keeping me up at night, historically speaking." Sana straightened, rubbing at tired eyes behind her spectacles. "Whoever sealed this vault had resources and knowledge that predate the Four Great Clans’ rise to power entirely. Which raises an uncomfortable possibility."
"That Kargekin didn’t create whatever’s down here," Nibel finished grimly. "They just found it. Same as us."
"Precisely. And if they’ve been searching prefecture after prefecture for two years," Sana continued, "it’s not unreasonable to assume they’re hunting for more seals like this one — pieces of something larger, scattered deliberately to keep it from ever being reassembled."
Vex went very still.
"Pieces," she repeated quietly, and something dangerous flickered behind her dark eyes. "You said the word pieces."
"Does that mean something to you?" Haruki asked.
Vex didn’t answer immediately, her gaze fixed on the mural’s central figure — the chained, towering shape wreathed in painted lightning.
"Before I was locked away," she said finally, voice quieter than Haruki had yet heard from her, "there was a rumor. Whispered among the handful of us powerful enough to actually threaten the old order. A weapon, or a key, or a curse — no one ever agreed on which — deliberately broken into fragments and scattered across the world so no single force could ever wield the whole of it again."
"And you think this vault is one of those fragments," Sana said.
"I think," Vex said slowly, "that if it is, then whatever Kargekin is really after isn’t just some artifact. It’s reassembly. Every fragment they collect brings them one step closer to something none of us are prepared to face."
The chamber fell into uneasy silence, broken only by the faint hum of Sana’s instruments feeding mana into the sealed door.
"There’s a way to test the theory," Sana said eventually, crouching back down beside her equipment. "If this door responds to a specific resonance frequency rather than brute unsealing force, I might be able to trigger it safely rather than forcing it open blind."
"Might," Rosalia repeated dubiously. "That’s a comforting word to use about an ancient seal built by forces we don’t understand."
"It’s the best option available," Sana said flatly. "Unless someone here has a better idea."
Nobody did.
Sana adjusted the mana threads with careful, practiced hands, murmuring calculations under her breath, and slowly, the concentric rings etched into the door’s surface began to glow — faint at first, then brighter, pulsing in a rhythm that made Haruki’s teeth ache.
"It’s responding," Sana breathed, equal parts triumph and dread. "Everyone stand back. I don’t know what happens once it fully opens."
The door’s rings spun faster, faster, until with a groan of ancient stone finally giving way, the entire structure split open along its center seam, revealing a shaft descending into absolute darkness.
Cold air rushed up from below, carrying with it a smell like old copper and older dust, and beneath it, faint but unmistakable, the same acrid tang of corruption Haruki had smelled in Toru Village’s ruins.
"Well," Vex said, peering down into the darkness with an expression caught somewhere between wariness and grim anticipation, "that answers whether this place is connected to whatever’s hunting your survivor."
"Everyone stays close," Haruki said, crimson Dao already gathering in his palm to light the way down. "Whatever’s down there, we go in together, and we come back out together. No exceptions."
Ariel’s hand found his free one, steady and warm despite the chill air rising from the shaft. "Together," she echoed quietly.
One by one, they descended into the dark — Haruki first, Dao-light casting long shadows against walls carved with the same unsettling script, Sana close behind with her instruments still humming faintly, Nibel and Rosalia flanking the rear, and Vex prowling silently at the edges, every sense clearly straining for the first hint of danger.
The shaft opened, after what felt like an impossibly long descent, into a vast chamber far larger than the mural room above — its ceiling lost somewhere in shadow beyond the reach of Haruki’s light, and at its center, resting atop a cracked stone pedestal, a single object that made every hair on his arms stand on end the moment his light fell across it.
A fragment of dark, jagged metal, no larger than a dagger’s blade, etched with the same chain-and-lightning motif as the mural above — and pulsing, faintly but unmistakably, with a heartbeat of its own.
"That’s it," Sana whispered, her instruments practically screaming with resonance readings. "That has to be it. The first piece."
"Lougen," a new voice said from the shadows beyond Haruki’s light, calm, amused, entirely unbothered by the six armed cultivators suddenly turning toward the sound. "I was wondering how long it would take you to find your way down here. Congratulations. You’ve saved my associates a great deal of digging."
