The governor’s estate slept under a bruised sky. Most of the lanterns had been extinguished hours ago, but the moon still bled silver across the curved tiles of the western balcony. Haruki stood at the stone railing, forearms braced, head bowed. The night wind tugged at the loose black silk of his shirt, doing nothing to cool the fever in his blood.
Every time he closed his eyes he saw the same things: Shuten and Ruten’s faces at the edge of that cliff, the contempt in their voices as they called his own death a gift. Then the deeper dread — Sana’s careful, probing questions in the mural chamber, the way she’d asked, gently but pointedly, where the Toru Village survivor was being kept safe now. He hadn’t told her. He wouldn’t. But the fact that she’d already pieced together enough to ask meant Kargekin might not be far behind in reaching the same conclusion. And beneath all of it, the sealed vault door they’d found that morning, its rings of ancient script still humming faintly behind his eyes, a reminder that whatever Kargekin was actually chasing might be considerably closer to the surface than any of them wanted to believe.
He didn’t hear Ariel approach. Bare feet on cool stone, the soft rustle of her thin robe. Only when her scent—jasmine, warm skin, and the faint trace of ozone from her last technique—wrapped around him did his shoulders loosen a fraction.
She stopped just behind him. Close enough that he could feel the heat of her body against the night chill.
"You’re carrying the whole mountain again," she said quietly.
Haruki exhaled a laugh that held no humor. "Feels that way."
Ariel stepped forward and slid her arms around his waist from behind, pressing her cheek between his shoulder blades. The simple contact made something inside his chest crack open. He gripped the railing harder.
"I keep replaying it," he admitted, voice low. "My brothers, on that cliff. And now Sana asking questions I can’t fully answer, about someone I can’t afford to let Kargekin ever find. Every time I breathe I feel that vault sitting under this whole prefecture, waiting. Like whatever’s sealed down there already knows we’re coming for it."
Ariel’s arms tightened. She didn’t offer empty reassurances. Instead she kissed the back of his neck, slow and deliberate, lips warm against the tension coiled there.
"Then let me remind you what’s real right now," she whispered against his skin.
Haruki turned in her embrace. The moment their eyes met, the storm in his chest quieted—just enough. Ariel’s gaze was steady, luminous in the moonlight, full of something fierce and gentle at the same time. She reached up, cupped his jaw, and pulled him down into a kiss.
It started tender. A soft press of mouths, a shared breath. Then her tongue traced his lower lip and he opened for her with a broken sound. The kiss deepened, still unhurried, like she was pouring calm directly into his veins. Haruki’s hands found her waist, fingers curling into the thin silk of her robe. He could feel the heat of her through the fabric, the steady beat of her heart against his chest.
When they finally parted, Ariel rested her forehead against his.
"You’re not alone on that mountain anymore," she said. "Not tonight."
She took his hand and led him back from the railing to the wide wooden bench tucked against the estate wall. Moonlight spilled across it like liquid pearl. Ariel sat first, then guided him down so he was between her legs, back to her chest. She wrapped her arms around him again, one hand slipping beneath the open collar of his shirt to rest over his heart.
"Feel that?" she murmured, lips brushing the shell of his ear. "That’s yours. That rhythm. That life. Whatever Kargekin’s after, whatever’s behind that door, it doesn’t get to take this from you. Not while I’m here."
Haruki closed his eyes and leaned into her. The steady thump of her heartbeat against his back, the warmth of her thighs bracketing his hips, the gentle circles her thumb traced over his sternum—it all began to pull him out of the spiral.
Ariel’s free hand slid lower, fingertips tracing the hard lines of his abdomen through the silk. Not demanding. Just present. Reminding. She kissed the side of his neck again, then scraped her teeth lightly over the same spot, drawing a low groan from him.
"I want to feel you here with me," she whispered. "Not in your head. Right here."
Haruki turned his head, capturing her mouth again. This kiss was deeper, slower, laced with the ache he’d been carrying. Ariel met every stroke of his tongue, every sigh, giving him an anchor to hold onto. Her hand slipped further down until her palm pressed over the growing hardness beneath his pants. She didn’t stroke him yet—just held him, warm and steady, letting him feel how safe he was in her hands.
"Talk to me," she breathed between kisses. "Tell me what you need tonight."
"You," he answered, voice rough. "Just... you. Like this. Don’t let me disappear into it again."
Ariel made a soft, understanding sound. She coaxed him to shift until he was half-reclined against her, head tipped back on her shoulder. With patient fingers she untied the sash of his shirt and pushed the silk open, exposing his chest and the ink that curled over his ribs. She traced every line with her fingertips like she was memorizing him, then leaned down to follow the same path with her mouth.
Each kiss landed like a promise. Over his collarbone. Down the center of his chest. Across the tight plane of his stomach. When she reached the waistband of his pants she looked up at him, eyes dark with want and something far softer.
"May I?" she asked.
Haruki nodded, throat tight. "Please."
She freed him with gentle hands. His cock sprang heavy and flushed into the cool night air. Ariel wrapped her fingers around him—not stroking hard, just holding, grounding him with touch. She pressed an open-mouthed kiss to the underside of his length, then another, working her way up until her lips closed over the head.
The wet heat of her mouth pulled a shuddering breath from him. Ariel took him deeper, slow and reverent, tongue swirling lazily. There was no rush. Every movement was designed to keep him here, in this moment, with her. One of her hands stroked the inside of his thigh while the other pumped what her mouth couldn’t reach, steady and loving.
Haruki’s fingers threaded through her hair, not guiding, just holding on. The pleasure was intense but secondary to the safety blooming in his chest. Every time his thoughts tried to drift back to the cliff, to the vault, to the shadow of Kargekin, Ariel would hum around him or squeeze his thigh, pulling him back.
When she finally drew off with a soft pop, her lips were glossy and her eyes shone with emotion. She climbed up his body, straddling his hips, robe falling open to reveal smooth skin and the soft curve of her breasts. Haruki sat up enough to pull her fully against him, burying his face between her neck and shoulder.
"I’m scared, Ariel," he whispered against her skin—the words finally breaking free. "If Kargekin finds out what I’m protecting... if that vault holds even a fraction of what Sana thinks it does... I don’t know if I’m strong enough to keep everyone safe. To keep *you* safe."
She cradled the back of his head, rocking them gently.
"You don’t have to be strong enough alone," she answered, voice thick. "We face whatever’s down there together. All of us. And right now, you’re safe with me. Feel it."
Ariel reached between them, positioned him at her entrance, and sank down slowly. The tight, slick heat of her enveloping him drew a broken moan from both of them. She stilled once he was fully seated, letting them both adjust, foreheads pressed together.
They stayed like that for long moments—connected, breathing each other in. Then Ariel began to move. Not frantic. Not feral. Just deep, rolling rocks of her hips that dragged him against every sensitive place inside her. Haruki’s hands slid under her open robe, palms mapping the curve of her spine, the dip of her waist, the swell of her ass as he helped guide her.
Every thrust was accompanied by soft words.
"I’ve got you."
"You’re here."
"I’m not going anywhere."
The pleasure built gradually, a warm tide rather than a storm. Ariel’s breath hitched each time he filled her completely. Haruki kissed her throat, her jaw, her mouth—pouring every ounce of gratitude and fear and love into each press of lips. When her movements grew a little more desperate he slipped a hand between them and circled her clit with tender precision, matching the rhythm she needed.
Her climax rolled through her first—quiet, trembling, her inner walls pulsing around him in long, powerful waves. She gasped his name like a prayer, clinging to him. The sight and feel of her coming undone because of him, because she ’chose’ him, shattered the last of Haruki’s restraint. He followed her over with a low groan, spilling deep inside her as pleasure and relief crashed through every nerve.
They stayed locked together afterward, Ariel draped over his chest, his arms wrapped tight around her. The night air cooled the sweat on their skin. Haruki pressed lazy kisses to her temple, her hair, anywhere he could reach.
After a long silence, a faint blue window shimmered into existence at the edge of his vision—visible only to him.

He smiled faintly against her hair and let the notifications fade. The dread about Kargekin hadn’t vanished. The weight of what waited behind that sealed vault door still sat heavy in his gut. But for the first time since Sana’s questions in the mural chamber, Haruki felt grounded. Anchored.
Ariel lifted her head just enough to meet his eyes. Her voice was soft, a little husky.
"Still with me?"
Haruki brushed a strand of hair from her cheek, thumb tracing her lower lip.
"Yeah," he murmured. "I’m here. Thanks to you."
She kissed him once more, soft and unhurried, and for a while longer, the night held nothing but the two of them.
