[KATYA]
The moment Anya stepped out the door, Svetlana relaxed and got off her friend. It was almost like she had noticed the danger was gone, and she could have a proper conversation with Katya.
He expected it, honestly, seeing as they were here instead of at their workplaces. And Katya felt bad for them because his life was fucking theirs over, but would they even complain about it?
"Don’t even think about it, Romanov," Svet said, and Katya turned to look at her.
She was now seated on the side with Andre, like she was trying to understand what had happened or even the hows and whys.
"What..."
"It wasn’t your fault. None of this was your fault," Svet said calmly, and Katya sighed.
It was honestly easy to think like that because he hadn’t done anything wrong. He had simply panicked because of Sergei, and it was a valid reaction to everything that he had been put through with Anya, but still, it didn’t make it any easier.
Because at the end of the day, there was never going to be a chance at anything better anymore.
Or maybe this was truly the end of the road for them because what else would Katya ever say to explain that he had crazy friends who didn’t think twice about wanting to strangle Sergei for him?
"You got pulled out of work because of me. I am not at work because I freaked out and got stupid. We need to get back out there. We need to keep doing our normal," Katya said as he pulled the covers off of him.
He was tired and felt like he was about to go nuts, but he couldn’t stay here.
There were still so many stakes for him.
He appreciated his friends being here, because frankly, he didn’t know what he would have done if he woke up and the first face he saw was Sergei Moskowsky.
He would probably have played dead until the man left.
But there wasn’t a need for that anymore, now, was there?
"Work?" Andre asked, like that was the most incredulous thing he had ever heard.
"Yes... Life must go on. You can’t just stop living your lives just because a pathetic omega isn’t strong enough to face his captor. You do know that this place is a prison and out there is the only chance I get, even if it’s another prison, right?" Katya asked calmly.
Svet gritted her teeth before she began pacing. She had always known what the Moskowskys had done and had stripped away her feisty friend.
Katya was never one to take shit for anyone, ever. He always fought back with his mouth. He always made remarks, and he was never one to just stand by and watch everything on the side like he was a spectator in his own life.
And that right there pissed off Svet so badly because even she knew that the damage was too much.
"I’ll kill that cheating bastard first. Then I’ll kill his father," Svet said, before she grabbed her purse and walked out.
If it were Andre, Katya would have just said that the man was being dramatic.
But not Svet.
Never Svet.
That woman had a thousand and one loose screws, and if she was going after Yaroslav, there was no stopping her.
Katya knew it was an insane reality that Svet was considering, but a part of him wanted to see Yaroslav suffer for cheating him.
For ruining their marriage.
For triggering his miscarriage.
He had finally had the one chance to have a baby, and now, there was even a possibility. Sure, he hadn’t seen any doctor in the room, but Katya wasn’t stupid.
It was easy like that because waking up and seeing anyone was the confirmation he needed to know that he would only ever be useful for one thing.
His heart.
"No, Svet, wait," Katya begged, but Svet was not listening.
She was already outside, walking away. She looked pissed, and Katya looked at Andre, who just nodded softly before stepping out to go after Svetlana.
That woman was not in her right mind to be facing a Moskowsky, not after everything that had happened so far, anyway.
"You can’t be serious, Andre. Didn’t you hear him? He’s even pretending the miscarriage didn’t happen! What kind of fuckery is this supposed to be? I am going to kill him!" Katya heard Svet shout in rage.
"He needs time to process it, Svet. You know how hard everything has been for him. We can’t be the reason he gets stressed again," Andre tried to reason.
"You cannot ask that of me. Did you look at him? Did you really see him? How scared he was? He still talks about going to work in that darn place when he is not even healed. If they were going to force him to work, surely letting him breathe was not too much to ask, right?
"They are the Moskowskys. They don’t have to be there for their company to run. So why in all fucks was Romanov forced to work, right from the hospital, without so much as a care about what happened to him?!" Svet demanded in rage
She didn’t understand, and even if someone tried to explain it to her, she wouldn’t be able to understand it still. Because there was never going to be justification enough for Katya’s suffering.
"We need to let him process this the way he knows how, Svet. You can’t go starting fires again," Andre insisted.
"I am not going to start a fire. You know, if maybe they had gotten him to actually heal first, to come to terms with the fact that he lost the most precious thing to him, before they shoved that shit in his face, I would understand.
"He was excited, Andre. You saw it too. He was looking forward to finally having his pup. And that fucking Moskowsky brat took it from him. I am going to kill him for it. If he kills me, good for him.
"If he doesn’t kill me, then I will make it my life’s mission to burn that shit to the ground for Romanov," Svet argued angrily.
She was done.
I’m done with everything that was happening. All she wanted was to see her friend happy, yet happiness was obviously the one thing that had evaded him.
Maybe this was his karma.
"His family... You know he is doing this for them," Andre reminded.
"You think I don’t know that? I was there too, member? When he cried himself to sleep beside his mother every thirty minutes that dark hellhole gave him in the name of a break. I was there.
"Romanov didn’t even grieve for his baby. He didn’t even get to process the fact that they had taken everything from him. You think money and wealth are going to fix that emptiness? Yaroslav took a life, and I will take his.
"You can try stopping me, but I assure you, Andre, you will lose," Svet said before heels were heard strutting away again.
Katya had heard them.
The way Svet was so angry, and for a moment, he wondered if he was too lost in his reality that he had not gotten the chance to think of his lost pup.
He had wanted that child.
He had been so ready that he had finally had the chance to live a happy life. To be free from the snide remarks that were spoken in hushed tones. He finally had something to show for his marriage, and it had been taken from him.
He didn’t even get a say in how his life was.
And for the first time in a long while, Katya let himself cry for his child.
For what could have been.
For the reality that had been so close.
He let himself mourn because, honestly, his life was over before he had even started it. It was the most unhinged of this and unfortunate turns for him, and frankly, it haunted him so much.
"What have I become?" Katya cried softly as he went back under the covers, hoping that this would go away.
But would it?
In the security room on the lower floors of the building, the sound of vases hitting the wall was heard.
"What the fuck did I do?" Anya sighed as she slid against the wall in shame.
