[SERGEI]
[Two years ago]
"You cannot seriously consider this. What the hell is going on with you?" a frustrated Anya asked as she looked at a stubborn Sergei who had been pacing for the past thirty minutes.
For a man who commanded the city and had everyone bending to his will, within this penthouse’s walls, he was not the devil of Frolo, but just a man with his family.
"He is cheating on him. I know it," Sergei said, not once stopping.
"That is NONE of your business. He is your son. You married his father. You promised Vitya you would take care of him," Anya reminded.
Sergei paused.
Like that was a memory he had not been ready to let go of.
"I kept my promise, Anya. I am still keeping my promise. Don’t you ever question that?" Sergei said stiffly, you would think he had just been burned by the words that Anya had spoken.
"Then forget about the boy. You can’t do this, Sergei. He is married to your son. It’s only been what? Three years since they got married?" Anya asked.
Sergei just stared.
He had no defense for that.
His memory of the wedding hit him so hard that he had to remind himself that he was the father of the cheater.
Maybe that was the problem.
Or maybe the problem was the omega his son had married.
The innocent omega who smiled too brightly, as if the world were filled with stars.
The omega who lit every room he walked into, even without having to try so hard.
The omega who had captured Sergei’s heart from the moment Yaroslav had introduced them.
Of course, the family back then had started pondering, asking questions that didn’t make Katya’s life easy, but Yaroslav had been firm and proven his love for the omega.
Then he cheated.
And for Sergei, that was the worst thing anyone could do to the pretty and bubbly omega everyone knew as Yaroslav’s partner.
"You can ask anything of me, Anya. Anything, even my life, I’ll give it without question. But please... Please don’t ask me to give him up," Sergei said quietly.
He knew this was wrong.
He knew there had been limits for a reason.
They were related, for fucks sake, but Sergei’s mind and sanity couldn’t take it. Not when Katya was the most beautiful thing he had set his eyes on.
Hell, Sergei had never thought he would find someone he wanted more than he had wanted Vitya, but the omega had overturned that. He had made the devil change his mind.
And while it felt like betrayal, Vitya had told Sergei on his deathbed to be happy.
Perhaps he hadn’t known at the time that happiness, for Sergei, would come in the form of a devastatingly beautiful omega.
An omega that their son had married.
"Sergei..." Anya warned, even though there wasn’t any bite to her words.
"I won’t do anything. I’ll keep my distance. I’ll watch from afar... if... if Yaro changes... if he stops cheating, I swear on my Vitya I will forget about Sonlyshka," Sergei said, pleading even with Anya.
He sounded desperate, like a part of him wanted the mega and the other rational bit of him understood that this was impossible.
That the sun and stars would bend to his will.
Katya deserved happiness, and if Yaro gave that to him, then Sergei would stay away.
But it was a lie.
They both knew it.
Even if neither said anything else.
"You processed divorce papers already, Sergei. Does that sound like you giving up?" Anya scolded as she grabbed the tin of pills on the table and popped some.
This man would definitely be the reason she lost her mind this early. Even old age hadn’t done that to her yet. She wasn’t even that old yet, right?
"It’s nothing. It’s just a piece of paper..."
"A piece of paper that makes sure Katya inherits everything that was meant for Yaroslav? Are you Katya’s father, or Yaroslav’s father, Sergei?" Anya asked defeatedly, her head in her hands as she tried to process the devil of Frolo’s line of thinking.
But no matter how hard she tried, no matter what she said, she should have been ready for this. Yet even now, as Sergei stood there, rolled sleeves, ragged composure that screamed insanity, she knew that this was not a man giving up.
"It’s not like that..." Sergei trailed off.
"Then enlighten me like I’m three years old, Sergei. What is it like? You want your son’s omega. You are giving the omega everything as if he were your—"
Anya paused.
Got up.
Walked to the window, head still in her hands like this was one of those realizations that she had never ever been prepared for.
She had to be wrong.
That was the look on her face.
Because there was just no fucking way.
There was no way what she was thinking was real.
"Anya, I can explain," Sergei said as he walked towards her, only for Anya to grab her walking stick and put some distance between them.
"No. Stay there. Do not take another step, or this will split that head on your neck countless times," Anya warned, the disappointment in her voice and the disbelief so haunting that Sergei knew he couldn’t say much anymore.
Did he even have to, when the signs were all there?
When this was something that could only ever happen once in a crazy season, and that had Anya staring as she had just discovered the reason why the deities stayed way too far from their creation?
"Anya, I l—" Sergei began, and Anya glared at him.
"Don’t finish that sentence, Sergei Vladimirovich Moskowsky. Do Not."
"You have to understand me, Anya," Sergei sighed quietly.
What was there to understand, though?
What else had Aya missed in the years of servitude to the devil of Frollo?
What were the lines that had been blurred, and she had turned a blind eye to them because Sergei was Sergei?
Would she turn a blind eye to this, too?
"You drafting the divorce papers was already crazy enough when those kids hadn’t even been married for five years. But the motivation behind it? What the fuck, Sergei?" Anya screeched, staggering for a moment.
Sergei was on her before she could fall to the ground.
"I can walk by myself," Anya grumbled.
"I’m sorry... I just... I haven’t felt this way before," Sergei defended as he helped Anya to the nearest seat.
He knew there would be too much trouble.
He understood the stakes a little too well, but his desire was a stubborn thing, and his obsession was the one thing that could burn down the kingdom.
He should have listened to Anya.
Should have stayed away.
How was he supposed to now?
"You said... If that son of yours doesn’t cheat... you will let Katya go," Anya said, breathing in and out like she was already so done with life and wanted her creator to take her;
...Instead of leaving her to deal with this stubborn barbarian who didn’t understand the first thing about lines that shouldn’t have been crossed.
Or even the forbidden aspects of life and common society.
"Yes. I will. I will forget about him, and teach my h— teach myself to let him go," Sergei said carefully.
"Okay. Get out," Anya dismissed.
"But you’re n—"
"Boy, I said leave," Anya insisted.
Sergei begrudgingly began heading out, intentionally dragging his feet.
"Sergei," the woman called out before Sergei reached the door.
Sergei turned quietly.
"If you don’t keep your word, you’ll never see me again."
Sergei stilled, swallowing thickly and horror plastered across his face.
