###Chapter 99: Losing All Her Family
The moment Mrs. Wainwright saw Zachary Hawthorne, she immediately averted her gaze. She clutched her clothes tightly, tears streaming uncontrollably down her face.
Talia Talbot walked up to Zachary Hawthorne, her voice laced with disgust. "I told you not to come. The Wainwrights are just unreasonable. Is there anything they won’t do for money?!" 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
Caleb Ford said blandly, "They’re poor. It’s not surprising they’d do things for money."
Zachary Hawthorne glanced at the wretched Mrs. Wainwright, his expression dark. His voice was ice-cold. "The Wainwrights’ affairs are none of your business. Silas, take her to the hospital."
Silas Sinclair led Luna Sterling away, and Talia Talbot hurried after them.
Caleb Ford stayed behind. Once the others were at a distance, he lowered his voice. "The Wainwrights’ business has nothing to do with you, and nothing to do with Luna. I think the Wainwrights were just trying to pull a stunt for your money, and it backfired."
Zachary Hawthorne’s face was grim. "I’ll investigate this myself. That’s enough out of you."
Caleb Ford sighed and walked around him to leave.
Only Mrs. Wainwright and a staff member were left in the morgue.
Zachary Hawthorne walked toward Mrs. Wainwright.
He had always despised her and Raymond Wainwright. They were two insatiably greedy people who hid behind Nina, using all sorts of tactics to pressure her into asking him for money, time and time again.
It wasn’t that Zachary Hawthorne cared about the money, but he was no fool. In all these years, every investment Raymond Wainwright made had failed, losing up to fifty million, yet they never learned their lesson. They even took out a joint loan with someone else.
With Raymond Wainwright’s death, no one knew the truth about that thirty million.
"I know everyone in the Wainwright family thinks I’m the one who caused your family to be ruined and torn apart because I wouldn’t give you the thirty million. I can’t be bothered to explain, and I certainly don’t need to explain anything to you." Zachary Hawthorne stared at the bowed head of Mrs. Wainwright, his tone utterly ruthless.
Mrs. Wainwright may have been harsh toward Luna Sterling, but in front of Zachary Hawthorne, she didn’t dare breathe a word.
’She knew she had lived a pathetic life. Her husband was dead, her married daughter couldn’t take care of her, and she couldn’t even afford the funeral expenses.’
"I’ll have someone arrange the funeral for you. As for the thirty million you want, the answer is no." Zachary Hawthorne didn’t care whether Raymond Wainwright was dead or not; he’d never had any feelings for the man. Handling the Wainwrights’ funeral was already a concession for Nina’s sake.
Mrs. Wainwright clutched her clothes tightly and said nothing.
"If you have any self-awareness, you’ll stop telling everyone I’m the Wainwrights’ son-in-law. Otherwise, the next one to die will be you... or Nina." After speaking this cold sentence, he left without a backward glance.
「The night deepened.」
Nina Wainwright woke from a dream with a start. For some unknown reason, she felt a strange sense of panic.
Picking up her phone, she discovered her mother had sent her many messages.
She unlocked it and tapped on the messages.
"I know you blame me. You blame me for being useless, for always taking money from you. I know I’m useless... To live to my age and be so humiliated without even a chance to talk back... Nina, I know you see us as a burden, that we’ve caused you so much trouble. That won’t happen anymore. In the days to come, when Mom and Dad are gone, you have to take good care of yourself."
On and on, in fragmented messages, Mrs. Wainwright said many things, all of them apologies.
It was because of their endless demands for money from Zachary Hawthorne that her marriage had reached this point.
After reading the messages, Nina Wainwright was filled with a terrible premonition.
She scrambled out of bed, left her hospital room, and ran for the stairs.
As she ran, she called for a car.
When she reached the hospital entrance, in her haste, she fell down the stairs. Ignoring the pain, she scrambled back to her feet and whispered, "Mom..."
She ran all the way out of the hospital and waited for a while before the car pulled up in front of her.
Nina Wainwright got into the car and told the driver, "To the crematorium."
Although the driver found the destination inauspicious, he saw her panicked face and started the engine without a word.
Nina Wainwright clutched her phone tightly and dialed her mother’s number.
The call went through, but no one answered.
Nina Wainwright bit her lip, tears falling endlessly.
Arriving at the crematorium, she ran all the way to the morgue, stumbling and falling several times along the way. Once inside, she searched frantically until she finally found Mrs. Wainwright in a corner, her wrists slit.
"Mom!" She ran over and fell to her knees before Mrs. Wainwright with a thud.
She grabbed her mother’s shoulders and shook her forcefully.
Her mother’s body was cold, and the floor was pooled with her blood. Nina Wainwright cried as she dialed for an ambulance. In the end, she dropped her phone and let out a gut-wrenching, grief-stricken shriek that startled the night attendant.
By the time the ambulance arrived, Nina Wainwright was already in a catatonic state.
Nina Wainwright didn’t know how she got to the hospital. The stark white fluorescent lights shone on her face, illuminating the tear tracks on her cheeks.
When Catherine Grant and Adrian Pemberton arrived, they saw her looking completely lifeless, and their hearts ached for her.
"Nina..." Catherine Grant called out softly.
Nina Wainwright didn’t respond.
She just stared stubbornly at the light above the operating room door.
’Deep down, Nina knew her mother couldn’t be saved.’
’Her mother’s body was already cold when she arrived.’
Adrian Pemberton stood to the side, making a call to the crematorium. After getting the details, he couldn’t help but glance at Nina Wainwright.
After the light on the operating room turned green, the doctors walked out.
Seeing Nina Wainwright, they shook their heads gently. "Our condolences."
The last thread of Nina Wainwright’s composure snapped. She became so unsteady on her feet that she nearly collapsed.
"Nina..." Catherine Grant’s voice was thick with tears.
In just a few short days, she had lost all her family, including the baby in her womb.
Nina Wainwright couldn’t even cry anymore. Her eyes were vacant. She watched as her mother was wheeled out of the operating room, her mouth opening and closing, before her vision went black and she fainted.
’If this was the price for marrying Zachary Hawthorne... I admit it, I was wrong... ’
Adrian Pemberton stepped forward and caught Nina Wainwright. His own eyes were red-rimmed, and his voice was choked with emotion as he said, "Let’s help take care of her parents’ funerals. I don’t think she’ll be able to recover from this anytime soon."
"I know," Catherine Grant said, her voice trembling.
Adrian Pemberton carried Nina Wainwright to a hospital room and said to Catherine Grant, "I asked the people at the crematorium. They said Luna Sterling and Zachary Hawthorne were both there this afternoon. After they left, Mrs. Wainwright wasn’t acting right, and then tonight... she slit her wrists."
Catherine Grant looked at Adrian Pemberton with red eyes. "They must have provoked Mrs. Wainwright."
"I don’t know if we should tell Nina about this," Adrian Pemberton said with a frown, his expression grave.
"After everything that’s happened, what’s the point of hiding it? Nina has to divorce Zachary Hawthorne. He’s bound to protect Luna Sterling. The Hawthorne and Sterling families have always been close. Even if he doesn’t help Luna, the Hawthornes will." Catherine Grant’s disgust for Zachary was particularly strong now.
Even if Mrs. Wainwright and Raymond Wainwright were in the wrong, they didn’t deserve to end up like this.
Raymond Wainwright had just died, and they went over there as a group to provoke Mrs. Wainwright. It’s simply inhuman.
"Let’s wait until she wakes up," Adrian Pemberton said, then turned to leave and handle the arrangements for Mrs. Wainwright’s body.
