###Chapter 41: The Test
Zachary Hawthorne hadn’t been home for a few days.
Adrian Pemberton, however, would message her from time to time to update her on Zachary Hawthorne’s condition at the hospital. For the past three days, Luna Sterling had been the one taking care of him.
It wasn’t actually that serious, but Luna Sterling had insisted he be hospitalized, so he had no choice but to comply.
Nina Wainwright couldn’t walk for the first two days, but on the third day, once the pain had subsided, she started getting out of bed and no longer needed to rely on the maids.
By now, she could move around freely, as long as she avoided any major movements.
In the evening, she was sitting in the living room watching TV out of sheer boredom when she heard a car horn honk at the gate.
Nina Wainwright paid it no mind and continued watching her show.
A moment later, Silas Sinclair came in and said respectfully to Nina Wainwright, "Mr. Hawthorne is in the car, waiting for you to join him for dinner."
"I’ve already eaten. Tell him to go by himself," Nina Wainwright replied gently. "Tell him I’m watching a show and won’t be going."
Silas Sinclair looked troubled, but after a moment’s hesitation, he turned and went back outside.
It wasn’t long before Zachary Hawthorne walked in.
Seeing Nina Wainwright engrossed in the TV, he walked over, sat down beside her, wrapped an arm around her waist, and kissed her on the cheek. "What’s wrong? Are you angry I haven’t been back?"
"This isn’t the first time you haven’t come back," Nina Wainwright said flatly, her eyes still fixed on the television.
Zachary Hawthorne’s hand moved slowly from her waist to her shoulder. His warm fingertips gently pinched her cheek. "Angry?"
Nina Wainwright turned her head to look at him. "You haven’t done anything, so why would you think I’m angry?"
Her words clearly implied he had a guilty conscience.
Zachary Hawthorne chuckled and showed her his injured hand. "I’ve been gone for days. Weren’t you worried about me?"
In all that time, Nina Wainwright hadn’t called him once.
Zachary Hawthorne had originally hoped she would call him, or ask Silas Sinclair to bring her to the hospital to see him.
But in five whole days, she hadn’t made a single call.
"You didn’t call me either," Nina Wainwright said calmly.
Zachary Hawthorne didn’t dwell on the topic. He deliberately showed Nina Wainwright his stitched-up hand.
If Nina Wainwright didn’t know he’d been injured because of Luna Sterling, she would certainly feel sorry for him right now. But unfortunately... he had been hurt in a fight for another woman, and Nina Wainwright felt not a shred of sympathy for him.
"Have you eaten?" she asked.
Zachary Hawthorne shook his head. "I wouldn’t have asked you to join me if I had. Since you’ve already eaten, I’ll just have something here at home."
Nina Wainwright just said, "Oh." "Tell the kitchen staff yourself. I’m watching my show."
She showed no concern for his injured hand, which made Zachary Hawthorne uncomfortable. He couldn’t help but ask, "My hand is injured. Didn’t you see?"
Nina Wainwright turned her head to look at him. "How did you get hurt?"
Now that she asked, Zachary Hawthorne found it difficult to answer. He cleared his throat. "Uh, that night... Luna was being harassed. You should know about it. That’s when I got hurt."
Nina Wainwright’s lips twisted into a smirk. "Getting hurt for another woman, then coming back to me to play the victim. You really know how to open my eyes."
"Nina, are you jealous or angry?" Zachary Hawthorne asked, a smile playing on his lips.
Nina Wainwright looked at him with perfectly calm eyes. "I’m not angry, nor am I jealous. I don’t have the right. I’m well aware of my place."
Zachary Hawthorne was rendered speechless. He stood up and said flatly, "Fine. I’ll go out to eat, then. You stay here and watch your TV."
Nina Wainwright ignored him.
Zachary Hawthorne walked to the door and realized she truly didn’t care. Frowning, he left.
Once she heard the sound of the car driving away, Nina Wainwright lost all interest in watching TV.
She sat numbly on the sofa for a long while before finally letting out a quiet sigh. Then she turned off the TV and went upstairs.
She sat alone until the sky gradually darkened. Only then did she take a shower. Afterward, she lay in bed, listlessly scrolling through her phone.
She didn’t know when she fell asleep.
A shrill ringtone jolted her awake. Seeing it was a call from Silas Sinclair, Nina Wainwright pressed the answer key, her tone indifferent. "What is it?"
"You need to come to the hospital. Something’s happened to Mr. Hawthorne!" Silas Sinclair’s voice was grave.
Nina Wainwright was about to get out of bed, but she quickly sat back down. "It’s enough if Miss Sterling is there."
"Miss Wainwright, Mr. Hawthorne will definitely want to see you when he wakes up," Silas Sinclair said, his tone firm.
Nina Wainwright frowned. Before she could say anything, she heard Silas Sinclair continue, "Miss Wainwright, I’m on my way. I’ll be at the residence soon. Please get ready."
The call ended. Nina Wainwright had no choice but to get up and change her clothes.
The night was dark. As Nina Wainwright followed Silas Sinclair to the hospital, she didn’t say a word the entire way, nor did she ask what had happened.
As they neared the hospital, Silas Sinclair finally spoke. "Miss Wainwright, Mr. Hawthorne was targeted for revenge this time. He’s seriously injured."
When they were leaving the hotel, Silas had gone to get the car. Zachary was hit by another vehicle. The other party claimed it was an accident, but Silas later discovered it was people hired by the same group that had harassed Luna Sterling, looking for revenge.
Nina Wainwright just hummed in response, gazing nonchalantly out the window as if whether he was injured or not had nothing to do with her.
Silas Sinclair, who was filled with worry, suddenly felt his own anxiety deflate when faced with her indifference.
He said nothing more.
The car stopped at the hospital, and Silas Sinclair led her to Zachary Hawthorne’s room.
Zachary Hawthorne was still unconscious. His head, hand, and leg were all wrapped in bandages.
An oxygen tube was in his nose.
It seemed his injuries were indeed severe.
Nina Wainwright sat down to one side and asked Silas Sinclair, "So I just need to stay here and watch him?"
"Uh, if Mr. Hawthorne wakes up in the middle of the night and says he’s in pain, you need to find a doctor to give him a painkiller shot," Silas Sinclair said softly.
Nina Wainwright nodded.
But she had only been sitting in the room for a short while when a woman in a white haute couture dress burst in, followed by several young men and women.
Nina Wainwright was immediately pushed aside.
She stood silently in a corner.
"Silas, what happened to him? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?!" Luna Sterling asked, her voice choked with tears as she gripped Zachary Hawthorne’s uninjured hand.
Nina Wainwright heard her say, "Why didn’t you tell me sooner?"
’So, Silas informed both of us.’
Nina Wainwright found it laughable. ’If he already notified Luna Sterling, why bother notifying me?’
Silas Sinclair looked a bit embarrassed. "Mr. Hawthorne’s intention was to have Miss Wainwright come and take care of him."
Only then did the group seem to notice there was another person in the room.
They all turned to look at Nina Wainwright.
Nina Wainwright was dressed plainly, but she was tall and slender with fair, delicate skin. Even without makeup, her looks were on par with Luna Sterling’s.
A girl with short hair sized her up, then sneered, "That’s right. I hear Miss Wainwright is very good at taking care of people. Luna, you’re a pampered young lady, after all. Taking care of people isn’t really your thing."
"Exactly," a baby-faced man added with a smile.
Silas Sinclair glanced surreptitiously at Nina Wainwright.
