### Chapter 70: It’s Not Like He’s Short Twenty Million
"Are you trying to mock her on purpose?" Zachary Hawthorne asked, his expression dark. "If you’re unhappy with her, fine, but there’s no need to say things like that."
Nina Wainwright immediately changed her tune. "I was just asking casually. I didn’t mean anything by it."
Zachary Hawthorne stood up, suppressing the anger on his face. "Well, I’m heading to the hospital. As for the job, if you don’t want it, I’m not going to bother with you anymore."
"Okay," Nina Wainwright said, lowering her gaze and avoiding his eyes.
Zachary Hawthorne left without a moment’s hesitation.
’If he had just once refused Luna Sterling for my sake,’ Nina thought, ’maybe I would have wavered in my resolve. But he never did.’
She didn’t sleep well again that night.
Over the next few days, she continued her job search but still came up empty.
Sitting alone on a street corner, Nina sighed helplessly. It wasn’t that she was unwilling to lower her standards and take a low-paying job, but she couldn’t find anything suitable for her current physical condition...
Her hand went to her belly as she murmured, "Oh, baby, when will Mommy be able to find a job?"
All of her hopes now rested on the child in her womb.
As long as she thought about the baby in her belly, the pain and frustration of rejection didn’t feel so bad.
After sitting for a while, she decided to head back to Avelon Residence.
Just as she got on the bus, she received a call from Mrs. Wainwright. She pressed the answer key and asked calmly, "What is it?"
"You haven’t been to the hospital to see your father in a long time," Mrs. Wainwright said softly.
"Is there something you need?" Nina didn’t answer her question, instead pressing on with her own.
Mrs. Wainwright paused for a moment before asking tentatively, "How are things with you and Zachary Hawthorne? Are you still fighting?"
"What is it you really want to say?" Nina asked, her brows furrowing.
"Well, it’s like this. Your father said there’s a new mall being built in a pretty good location. The person in charge knows your dad, and they said if we invest twenty million, we could get two hundred million back. Could you talk to your son-in-law and ask him to lend us twenty million for the investment—?"
"Twenty million?" Nina couldn’t help but laugh coldly. "Two million was enough to drive us to the brink of jumping off a building, and you’re talking about twenty million?"
"No, really, this one’s a sure thing..."
"If you want to borrow it, ask him yourselves. I absolutely will not. And another thing—don’t call me unless it’s important." With that, Nina hung up the phone.
She just felt miserable... ’My relationship with Zachary is already at this point, and Mom must know it. But she hasn’t said a single word of concern this whole time. Every time she calls, it’s about money.’
’It’s as if I’m just an ATM to her.’
Zachary Hawthorne got back before she did.
Exhausted, Nina was about to go upstairs to take a shower when she heard him say from the sofa, "Your mother said you helped her ask me for a twenty-million-dollar investment. When did this happen? How come I don’t know anything about it?"
"Whatever she said, you can just treat it like a fart," Nina replied, her tone impatient.
Her mother hadn’t dared to say it was her own idea, so she’d pushed Nina out to take the blame.
"I believe they are *your* relatives, and you have an obligation to rein them in. Don’t let them call and waste my time when I’m working," Zachary said, his tone laced with disgust.
Nina knew he despised her parents, but he made no effort to hide it, which inevitably made her feel a pang of sadness.
"I can’t seem to get through to them either. I’m sorry," she said softly.
Her parents had no boundaries and were always calling to bother him, which she also found deeply embarrassing.
"If you were firmer with them, would they still be doing this? You can’t handle it yourself, so you just dump the problem on me," Zachary said coldly.
Nina took a deep breath. "I’ll call my mom right now."
"Let me make this perfectly clear: the Wainwright Family will not get a single cent from me. You can spend my money, but you spend it on yourself. I will not allow you to give it to them." After speaking, Zachary picked up his coat from the sofa.
It looked like he was about to leave again.
Nina walked up and blocked his path, then pulled the phone from his pocket.
Zachary stood before her, letting her take his hand and use it to unlock the phone.
She blocked both Mrs. Wainwright’s and Raymond Wainwright’s phone numbers and WeChat accounts, then handed the phone back to Zachary. "Is that good enough?"
Zachary put the phone back in his pocket and looked down at her. "I don’t recall giving you permission to touch my phone."
"You said last time that I could change your ringtone. I guess that was just a joke too," Nina said before turning to walk up the stairs.
A hint of a smile touched Zachary’s eyes. "I’ll be back later for dinner."
"Okay, I’ll tell the kitchen to prepare your meal," Nina replied.
After Zachary left, she called Mrs. Wainwright.
As soon as the call connected, she asked directly, "Did you call Zachary Hawthorne?"
"Well, I just thought I’d ask... But what’s going on with you two? It’s not like he’s short twenty million. Why is he suddenly being so harsh with you?" Mrs. Wainwright saw absolutely nothing wrong with having asked Zachary for money.
"I’m at Avelon Residence. You and Dad have never once come to visit us, but whenever you call, it’s always to ask for money. Do you and Dad really think that’s an acceptable way to behave?" Nina’s tone was mild.
She was pregnant now and had no desire to argue with Mrs. Wainwright.
"We just didn’t want to bother you two," Mrs. Wainwright replied, her voice lacking conviction.
Nina paused for a moment before saying, "He’s not going to give you the money. If you and Dad have any dignity left, you’ll stop calling him. Has Dad been moved to a regular ward now?"
"Yes, they said he can be discharged in a week. The money you gave me last time isn’t enough for food anymore. Can you transfer me another two thousand?" Mrs. Wainwright’s voice was tinged with embarrassment.
Sometimes, Nina truly found them pathetic.
They were at their age, and Zachary had already given them over fifty million, yet now in their later years, they didn’t even have money for food.
"I’ll come over and we can talk then." Nina felt a mix of resignation and frustration at their inability to improve.
She was trying her best not to get angry.
Mrs. Wainwright just grunted in acknowledgment.
If Zachary was coming home tonight, she wouldn’t be staying there.
Nina was afraid he would want to have sex with her again... It would be hard to explain her refusal, and it would just lead to another argument.
After showering, she told the kitchen staff that Zachary would be dining alone that evening, and then she left.
The hospital was bustling with people.
Nina found Raymond Wainwright’s room and pushed the door open to enter.
The moment Mrs. Wainwright saw her, she stood up. "Nina, your father and I haven’t eaten yet."
Raymond Wainwright was on his phone, playing cards. When he saw her arrive, he said with some dissatisfaction, "It’s that hard for you to get twenty million from Zachary Hawthorne for the investment...? What are you even doing here?"
"So if I don’t have money, I don’t have the right to see you, is that it?" Nina walked to the side and placed her bag on the table.
"That’s not what your father meant. His friend is in a hurry to secure investors, and he guaranteed this investment is a hundred percent sure to make money. Why don’t you talk to Zachary again?" Mrs. Wainwright quickly chimed in, trying to smooth things over.
Nina looked out the window, at a complete loss for words.
