###Chapter 96: The Death of Raymond Wainwright
"If there was nothing between you, why would she be pregnant with your child?!" Nina Wainwright shrieked. "If there was nothing going on, why would the Sterling Family trick my parents into taking out a thirty-million-dollar loan just to come after my baby?! Zachary Hawthorne, you could have investigated all of this. Why didn’t you? Is it because you’re afraid you can’t face the truth?!"
After she finished shouting, a wave of dizziness washed over her.
"You need evidence to back up your claims," Zachary Hawthorne retorted. "Just because you think the Sterling Family did it, I’m supposed to take your word for it and go after them? Besides, when did she get pregnant?"
Nina Wainwright looked at him, her eyes filled with hatred. "The two of you can just keep up your act. Treat me like an idiot. You think that just because I don’t have power or connections, I wouldn’t find out about your dirty deeds... Zachary Hawthorne, the biggest regret of my life is falling for you and marrying you! I utterly wasted three years of my life."
Zachary Hawthorne’s eyes turned icy. After a moment, he gave a self-deprecating laugh. "Wasted three years of your time? When the Wainwright Family married you off to me for money, why didn’t you say you regretted it? You’re only regretting it now?"
Nina Wainwright grabbed a nearby pillow and threw it at him with all her might. "Yes, so what?! I’m just that despicable! The entire Wainwright Family was just after the Hawthorne Family’s money! Is that what you want to hear?! Get out! Get out right now!"
’He never believed she married him—a man who didn’t even like her—out of love.’
’She had naively thought she could melt his cold heart, but she never imagined it would all end like this.’
’Her parents were saddled with a thirty-million-dollar loan out of nowhere, and she didn’t even know where her father was... Her mother didn’t even have a place to stay.’
Nina Wainwright could only hate herself. She hated that she had married a man like this for the sake of her so-called love.
Zachary Hawthorne took the pillow’s impact, suppressing his anger. "Calm down," he said in a low voice.
He understood that Nina was emotionally unstable after losing the baby. ’It was already difficult for her to conceive; this child must have been her everything... Of course she’s in agony now that the baby is gone.’
Nina Wainwright sat on the bed. After a moment of silence, she erupted into heart-wrenching sobs.
’Her baby was gone... Even though she had tried so desperately to protect her child, it had still come to this.’
The thought that she would never have her baby made Nina Wainwright’s heart feel like it was being sliced by a knife.
Zachary Hawthorne came forward and held her tightly in his arms. "We can have another child... Nina, we can have another one."
Nina Wainwright just kept crying.
Silas Sinclair found a doctor to give Nina Wainwright a sedative.
Zachary Hawthorne’s eyes were bloodshot.
’He didn’t understand why Nina hadn’t told him she was pregnant.’
’If she had told him, there’s no way the baby would have been lost.’
"Did you find out what I asked you to investigate?" Zachary Hawthorne asked, sitting by the bed and holding Nina Wainwright’s hand.
Silas Sinclair lowered his head, flustered. "I’ve sorted out the situation with the bank, but I haven’t been able to locate Nina Wainwright’s father yet."
A harsh glint appeared in Zachary Hawthorne’s eyes. "Then what are you still doing here?!"
Silas Sinclair hurried out.
When Nina Wainwright woke again, it was morning. Zachary Hawthorne wasn’t in the hospital room.
She got out of bed. Her lower body ached terribly, but she endured the pain, determined to leave.
The moment she opened the door, she saw Catherine Grant and Adrian Pemberton standing in the doorway.
Catherine Grant froze for a second when she saw her, then immediately pulled her into a hug. "Nina... I have some bad news."
Nina Wainwright leaned into her embrace, her voice faint. "What is it?"
Adrian Pemberton took a deep breath. "Your father... he passed away."
A roar filled Nina Wainwright’s head. She pushed Catherine Grant away in disbelief. "You’re joking, right? He was in perfect health..."
"He was kidnapped. He managed to escape on his own, but it was too dark out. He lost his footing and fell from a mountain. By the time someone found him... he was already gone," Adrian Pemberton said softly.
They had only found out from the news that morning.
Nina Wainwright stumbled back two steps, lost her balance, and collapsed onto the floor.
Her face was a mask of disbelief. She sat on the floor in a daze for a long moment before looking up at Catherine Grant and Adrian Pemberton. "You’re lying to me, right? My father... he was perfectly fine just a few days ago."
With her eyes red, Catherine Grant came forward and pulled her into an embrace. "Nina... We wish it weren’t true, but Dr. Pemberton and I went to the police station. It really was him. Your mother is there too..."
Nina Wainwright clutched at Catherine’s clothes, enunciating each word. "Take me to the police station."
Adrian Pemberton went to her side and helped her up from the floor.
The three of them got into the car.
Strangely, Nina Wainwright had become calm.
"My investigation shows that your father was indeed kidnapped by people sent by the Sterling Family, but we don’t have conclusive evidence. Even if we catch the culprits, they can just take the fall for the Sterlings and deny they were involved," Adrian Pemberton said, sitting beside Nina Wainwright with a grave tone.
"Are you sure it was the Sterling Family?" Nina Wainwright asked, her eyes filled with hatred.
"Yes. We just lack the evidence. But don’t worry. As long as they did it, we’ll find proof sooner or later," Adrian Pemberton reassured her.
Nina Wainwright nodded. "Good... As long as we’re sure it was them, the evidence can wait... I will make them pay for everything, old and new!"
At the police station, Nina Wainwright gritted her teeth against the pain and finally saw Raymond Wainwright.
Raymond Wainwright had been badly injured in the fall. He had multiple wounds, and the torn flesh had already turned a deathly white.
One glance was all it took for Nina Wainwright to nearly faint.
Catherine Grant and Adrian Pemberton caught her, holding her firmly.
When Mrs. Wainwright saw her, she immediately began to rail at her. "What are you doing here?! Weren’t you going to wash your hands of us? Well, now you don’t have to worry about a thing!"
"Mom..."
"You’re no daughter of mine! Don’t you dare come to your father’s funeral! The Wainwright Family has no daughter like you!" Mrs. Wainwright roared.
Crying, Nina Wainwright moved forward and knelt before her mother. "Mom, I did go... I never thought things would turn out this way... I was wrong..."
Mrs. Wainwright slapped her across the face. "What good are you?! Go on, cling to your precious pride! I told you to beg Zachary Hawthorne, but you wouldn’t listen! What good are you now?!"
The slap sent Nina Wainwright sprawling to the floor. She lay there, her voice choked with anguished sobs. "Mom, I did go... I begged him... It was no use... He wouldn’t help me. He said he had to go on a business trip and just left me..."
"The Wainwright Family has no daughter like you, and I have no daughter like you! You are not to come to your father’s funeral! I forbid it!" Mrs. Wainwright shrieked.
Catherine Grant couldn’t bear it any longer and stepped forward to defend Nina Wainwright. "She did go to Zachary Hawthorne! What was she supposed to do when he wouldn’t help? She even lost her own child! Do you think she isn’t suffering?!"
"She had the nerve to get pregnant with Zachary Hawthorne’s child?! Zachary Hawthorne doesn’t even love her, and she was carrying his baby! Has she no shame?!" Mrs. Wainwright cursed viciously.
Nina Wainwright collapsed into Catherine Grant’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
"Get out of my sight! I don’t want to see you!" Mrs. Wainwright shrieked before turning back to cradle Raymond Wainwright’s body, her cries resuming.*****
