###Chapter 97: I Won’t Believe a Single Word You Say
Nina Wainwright’s heart felt like it was being sliced apart as she listened to Mrs. Wainwright’s words.
Tears streamed down her face, soaking her cheeks. When her mother wanted money from Zachary Hawthorne, Nina was expected to coax it out of him. But when he refused to handle the Wainwright Family’s affairs, even carrying his child was considered shameless.
Catherine Grant hugged Nina Wainwright tightly, unable to stop herself from sobbing aloud.
She felt so wronged on Nina’s behalf.
She had lost her own child in an attempt to save Raymond Wainwright, yet no one understood. Even her own mother was hurting her with such words.
Adrian Pemberton stepped in front of Nina, frowning at Mrs. Wainwright. "Others might say such things about her, but you’re her mother. How could you? She just became a mother, just lost her child, and now her father. The pain in her heart is no less than yours."
Mrs. Wainwright sobbed, her eyes red as she glared at Nina. "She doesn’t care about us at all..." she snapped.
"If she didn’t care, would she have offered herself up in the exchange?" Catherine countered, her own eyes red. "You lost a husband, and she lost a father. Do you really think she’s feeling any better than you are?"
"Don’t you two stand there defending her! All you’re doing is trying to absolve her of guilt, trying to say she did nothing wrong!" Mrs. Wainwright refused to listen to a word they said.
Nina stopped Catherine, who was about to say more.
’If everything I say is wrong, it’s better to say nothing at all.’
Catherine’s chest heaved with anger. In that moment, she was truly grateful she had asked Adrian Pemberton to come with her. Otherwise, how heartbroken would Nina have been, facing all this alone?
Adrian Pemberton helped her up.
Nina’s mother was beyond reason now. There was no point in saying anything else. The best they could do was take Nina back to the hospital so she could rest and recover.
"Let’s go back to the hospital, Nina," Catherine said softly.
Nina glanced at Mrs. Wainwright.
With a cold expression, Mrs. Wainwright ignored her completely.
A wave of sorrow washed over Nina. She averted her gaze and let Catherine help her away.
Adrian had always thought Mrs. Wainwright was selfish, but now he was experiencing her self-centeredness firsthand and up close.
He had been following this situation ever since Catherine called him. The Wainwrights had taken out loans behind Nina’s back, borrowing whatever amount was offered without a second thought and without ever breathing a word of it to Nina.
The last two-million-dollar incident hadn’t taught them a lesson. They still dared to take money from such a dubious source.
Even someone as good-tempered as Adrian was filled with rage.
"What else do you have to say?" Mrs. Wainwright asked, her face impassive.
Adrian studied her. "I can understand when parents with many children don’t dote on every single one. It’s natural to favor the one or two who are more obedient and neglect the others. But you only have Nina. She’s obedient and gentle-natured, yet I can’t see a shred of love from either of you for her."
Mrs. Wainwright didn’t answer, avoiding Adrian’s gaze instead.
"That time with the two million, Zachary refused to pay up, and she was forced to scramble for a job. What did you do then? You two create one mess after another and always leave it for her to clean up. You call her shameless for carrying Zachary’s child, but you forcing her to beg Zachary for money over and over again—is that supposed to be honorable?" Adrian pressed on.
"Stop it!" Mrs. Wainwright shrieked.
"Without her, you wouldn’t even have money for the funeral. If you want to cut ties, then cut them completely. Don’t use a single cent of her money." With that, Adrian turned and walked away.
Only then did Mrs. Wainwright realize she only had a few hundred dollars on her.
It was from the two thousand dollars Nina had given her for living expenses last time.
After Adrian left, she let out a choked sob as tears streamed down her face.
When Nina returned to the hospital, she was in a terrible state. No matter what Catherine said, she would only nod without speaking a word.
Seeing her like this, Adrian’s face filled with sympathy. He sat by her bed and said gently, "Nina, you can’t blame yourself for what happened to your dad. It’s very likely they never intended to let him go from the very beginning."
Nina looked at him, her eyes rimmed with red. "If you’re certain the Sterling Family was involved in this, then that’s all I need to know."
She repeated this, and both Adrian and Catherine knew she wanted revenge.
"Nina..." Catherine stepped forward and hugged her, choking back sobs. "No matter what you decide to do, I’ll support you."
"Okay..." Nina whispered. ’Right now, what I need to do is divorce Zachary.’
’I can’t blame Zachary for Raymond Wainwright’s death; after all, he had no reason to get involved in the Wainwright Family’s affairs. But it was his infidelity, his getting Luna Sterling pregnant, that led the Sterling Family to target my parents... and my child.’
Nina knew it was time for her to wake up.
’Marrying Zachary was a waste of three years. Now I’ve lost my father, lost my child... My family is destroyed.’
’What else would it take to wake me up?’
By the time Zachary Hawthorne arrived, he had already heard that Raymond Wainwright was dead.
He stood before the door to Nina’s hospital room, hesitating to knock.
Silas Sinclair stood beside him, watching. He understood that with a death in the Wainwright Family, the marriage between Nina and Zachary was no longer sustainable.
’If only he had trusted Nina just a little,’ Silas thought, ’Raymond Wainwright wouldn’t have died.’
’Money is a small matter. A person, once dead, cannot be brought back to life.’
The sound of Zachary knocking on the door pulled Silas from his thoughts.
From inside the room, Nina gave no answer.
Zachary pushed the door open and walked in, his expression grim.
Nina, lying on the bed, was staring out the window, paying him no mind at all.
"Nina," Zachary couldn’t help but call out softly.
Nina didn’t answer him.
Zachary walked over to her, blocking her view. "I’ll have Silas Sinclair investigate your family’s matter thoroughly."
Nina lifted her gaze to his, her eyes cold as ice. "I won’t believe a single word of your investigation. I’ll find out the truth myself. Even if it takes the rest of my life, I will not let the Sterling Family get away with this!"
"The current evidence doesn’t prove the Sterling Family did it. You need to calm down." Zachary sat on the edge of the bed.
Hearing this, Nina couldn’t help but laugh coldly. She glared at Zachary. "I knew you’d make excuses for the Sterling Family. For your precious Luna, is there anything you wouldn’t do?"
"I told you, there’s nothing between me and her—"
"Nothing between you? Then how could she be pregnant with your child?!" Nina cut him off, her voice filled with hatred. "You defend her time and again, hiding her behind you while telling me there’s nothing going on... If there’s nothing going on, how did she get pregnant?"
"I’ll call her over right now. We can confront this head-on. When did I ever get her pregnant?" The veins on Zachary’s temples throbbed with anger.
"You’re on the same side. You think I’d believe a word either of you say?! Luna Sterling has always been fooling me with her friendly act, and that’s how she can still have you protecting her after destroying my family! Zachary, if you don’t grant me a divorce, I will sue for one!" Nina’s tone was resolute.
She would never believe Zachary again.
The Wainwright Family had lost a life, and she had lost her child.
If she didn’t get revenge for this, Nina would be failing her lost child and the late Raymond Wainwright.
