### Chapter 65: I’m Not Leaving You Behind
"What do I need to explain to you?" Zachary Hawthorne asked, his voice devoid of warmth.
Mrs. Sterling was left speechless. After a moment of silence, her tone softened. "My daughter went through something like this, and Nina Wainwright just watched and did nothing. Doesn’t she have anything to say for herself?"
"Why should she have anything to say?" Zachary Hawthorne said coolly. "She and Luna were never close to begin with."
Mrs. Sterling was taken aback, her voice tinged with frustration. "Zach, my Luna has known you since you were kids... She has feelings for you. If she didn’t like you, she wouldn’t have tried to get on Nina Wainwright’s good side, and this never would have happened."
"She was the one who begged me, time and again, to be friends with Nina, but Nina didn’t like her. You can’t blame Nina for this," Zachary Hawthorne told her calmly.
Mrs. Sterling remembered that he hadn’t married Nina Wainwright out of love.
She had heard it was because Luna hadn’t listened to his advice, insisting on going abroad to further her career, which angered him right when he was about to propose. In a fit of anger, he married Nina Wainwright instead.
Mrs. Sterling had even thought that he and Nina Wainwright wouldn’t last. After all, he hadn’t even been willing to make their marriage public—only a few people in their social circle knew. But to her surprise, they had somehow managed to have a stable marriage for three years.
"Then our family—"
"What happened to her was because of one of my business rivals. I’ll find out who it was and get justice for her." With that, Zachary Hawthorne hung up.
Zachary Hawthorne didn’t come home all night.
Nina Wainwright woke up early. After getting ready, she walked out of Avelon Residence. Gazing at the sun, she felt a slight sense of relief.
She touched her lower abdomen and decided to go to a small clinic for a check-up first.
When Catherine Grant drove over to pick her up, she noticed how pale Nina’s face was. "You don’t look well," she couldn’t help but say. "Did Zachary Hawthorne do something awful again?"
Nina Wainwright smiled at her. "I was just too happy last night, so I didn’t sleep well."
Catherine Grant frowned. "Don’t scare me. If you were so happy, why couldn’t you sleep?"
"Zachary Hawthorne isn’t paying much attention to me anymore." Nina Wainwright leaned back against the seat, her tone light. "I can start looking for a job now, but... it’ll have to be something low-stress until the baby is born."
Catherine Grant’s expression turned serious as she looked at her. "Are you really okay? If he’s not paying attention to you anymore, doesn’t that mean he doesn’t care about you at all?"
"It’s better if he doesn’t care. Otherwise, this baby inside me wouldn’t survive," Nina Wainwright said faintly.
The moment the baby was mentioned, Catherine Grant stopped defending Zachary Hawthorne. Once Nina was settled in, she started the engine. "Dr. Pemberton is waiting for you at the clinic. After their doctor finishes your exam, they’ll erase your records."
"Will this get him into trouble? If so, we should just tell him not to bother," Nina Wainwright said, her voice laced with worry.
"He said things are already bad enough for him, so he’s not afraid of them getting worse," Catherine Grant comforted her. "What would really upset Dr. Pemberton is going to all this trouble and still not being able to save your baby."
Nina Wainwright sighed and said no more.
They arrived at a private clinic. While Catherine Grant went to park, Nina headed inside first.
Adrian Pemberton was sitting inside the clinic. He stood up the moment he saw her enter. "How are you? My grandmother said you had an episode of bleeding. Is the fetus stable?"
"I haven’t had a check-up since I got back, so I’m not sure," Nina Wainwright said, reaching out to take both his hands and lift them up.
His right wrist was wrapped in gauze. Nina Wainwright stared at it for a moment, then looked up at him, her eyes welling up. "This is my fault."
"It’s not about fault. Get your check-up first," Adrian Pemberton said, pulling his hands back. "I’ve already spoken to the people at this clinic. They won’t keep any records of your visits, so you can rest assured."
He didn’t want Nina Wainwright to feel guilty. ’Besides... I still can’t be sure if the attacker was one of Zachary Hawthorne’s people.’
’Based on my gut feeling about Zachary Hawthorne, I really don’t think the man would stoop to such dirty tricks.’
’So, the one who was really after me must be someone else.’
"Please come with me. I won’t ask for your name. Once the exam is finished, I’ll give you the results directly," a woman in a white coat said as she walked out of the OB/GYN room.
Nina Wainwright nodded, glanced at Adrian Pemberton, and then followed the woman into the room.
When Catherine Grant came in, she found Adrian Pemberton standing outside the OB/GYN room, staring blankly at the door.
"Dr. Pemberton," Catherine Grant called out softly.
’She could tell that Adrian Pemberton really liked Nina Wainwright. His affection was subtle and deeply hidden.’
Adrian Pemberton snapped out of his trance, turning to smile at her. "An acquaintance of mine owns this place. Next time you bring her, just be careful and make sure you aren’t followed."
"I know... but are you really leaving?" Catherine Grant really wished he could stay longer; Nina Wainwright desperately needed help.
’It’s obvious Zachary Hawthorne is going to divorce her; it’s just a matter of time. Once Adrian leaves, Nina will be completely on her own.’
"My hand needs treatment. Delaying won’t do me any good," Adrian Pemberton sighed softly. "Besides, my family wants me to return home immediately. If I don’t, they’ll send people to drag me back."
’If this hadn’t happened, I could have stayed by Nina Wainwright’s side.’
"Alright, then," Catherine Grant said sincerely. "I hope your hand makes a full recovery."
"Thank you." Adrian Pemberton gave a faint smile.
Nina Wainwright’s test results were good; the pregnancy was gradually stabilizing. The female doctor looked at the ultrasound for a moment before speaking. "You need to avoid emotional turmoil, especially anger. You’ve been getting sick often and have had continuous bleeding. Even if you don’t miscarry, the child will be difficult to raise. They could end up frail, smaller than their peers—all sorts of complications are possible."
Her words made Nina Wainwright’s entire body go tense.
"I understand..." For her child’s health, she had to keep her emotions in check, no matter what.
"Also, try to stay in good spirits. Your mood can have a big impact on the baby." The doctor seemed to want to say more, but knowing the circumstances, she just sighed. "Eat well. You need to build up strength for both yourself and the child."
"Okay," Nina Wainwright replied immediately.
The doctor looked at Adrian Pemberton. "Don’t worry, I’ll keep her information completely confidential. You can leave with peace of mind."
Hearing this, Nina Wainwright subconsciously looked toward Adrian Pemberton.
Shock flickered in her eyes, but then she remembered his hand and understood.
When the doctor left to attend to other matters, Nina Wainwright couldn’t help but ask, "Did you quit your job at the hospital?"
"Yes. I resigned after my hand was injured and I could no longer perform surgery. I’ve just been recovering lately... I’m not leaving you behind. I’m going for treatment. Once I’m better, I’ll come back for you. If you run into any financial trouble, remember to call me." Adrian Pemberton was very reluctant to leave her.
’But if I stayed here now, there wasn’t much I could do to help her.’
’Besides, I know I’ve been wrong.’
’Staying by her side in my current, powerless state wouldn’t help her in the slightest.’*****
