###Chapter 72: Just Think About a Divorce
Nina felt him embrace her from behind.
His hand rested on her lower abdomen as he whispered, "Help me out... like that time at the resort?"
Nina really didn’t like it, but to avoid arousing Zachary Hawthorne’s suspicion, she nodded. "I’ll take a shower first."
"I’ll join you," Zachary said, sweeping her up into his arms.
Nina clutched his clothes tightly.
Zachary had a pleasant scent, a cool and deeply captivating fragrance that was incredibly alluring.
When they came out of the bathroom, Zachary was still not satisfied. He laid her on the bed, and after lying down flat, he panted, "Nina, I want more..."
Nina had no choice but to continue helping him.
Afterward, a content Zachary pulled her into his arms and kissed her fiercely for a long time before saying in a husky voice, "Nina, let’s be good to each other, what do you say? If you ask me to stay in the future, I’ll never leave."
Nina wanted to believe him.
But the things men said at times like this were all empty promises.
When he was in the heat of the moment, he had told her they would grow old together and even asked her to have his child.
But once morning came and his head cleared, he would ask if she needed to take a pill.
"I’m very tired. I want to sleep," Nina said, nestled in his arms. Her voice was soft, but her throat was also hoarse.
"Nina, don’t you want to?" Zachary asked, pinching her cheek.
Being pregnant actually made it harder for her to endure than usual, but besides bearing it, she had no other choice.
"I was out walking all day today. I’m too tired to even think about it," Nina replied.
Zachary chuckled softly. "Couldn’t find a job?"
"Mhm," Nina’s voice held a hint of bewilderment.
Zachary held her tightly. "When you’ve thought it through, just tell Silas Sinclair."
Nina just grunted in response.
Nestled in his arms, she was soon breathing softly.
She was truly exhausted, and being pregnant only made her more fatigued. She had wanted to rest while job hunting during the day, but for the sake of her future, she had to grit her teeth and keep searching everywhere.
Zachary pulled up the covers, but just as he was about to rest, his phone started vibrating.
He silenced the vibration and held Nina tighter.
Nina vaguely heard the buzzing, but she quickly fell back into a deeper sleep.
「The next morning.」
After finishing breakfast, Zachary saw that Nina was still asleep and called Silas Sinclair.
"Follow her today and see what she’s up to. If there’s a suitable position for her, talk to the people in charge and get her the job." Seeing how exhausted she was last night, Zachary ultimately didn’t have the heart to let her keep searching aimlessly.
"Understood."
After Silas’s response, he hung up the phone.
When Nina came downstairs, she saw him sitting in the living room, drinking tea.
Sunlight streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, casting a warm glow on him.
"You haven’t left for work yet?" Nina asked casually.
"Are you disappointed I haven’t left for work?" The moment Zachary heard her, he felt like she was trying to rush him out.
Nina ignored him and walked toward the dining table.
Zachary stood up, adjusted his tie, and was about to say something to her when his phone vibrated again.
He took it out, saw it was Luna Sterling calling, and answered. "I’m about to head out. What is it?"
Nina glanced at him and sat down at the table.
She tried to tell herself she didn’t care, but she still found herself minding every time he received a call.
He hadn’t changed the ringtone, but he had switched it to vibrate.
Zachary noticed her watching him but kept his reply short. "Mhm."
After hanging up, he put his phone away and asked, "What are you looking at?"
"Was that Luna Sterling?" Nina asked.
Zachary gazed at her profile, a smile playing on his lips. "I changed it to vibrate. How did you know it was her?"
’Intuition, I guess,’ Nina thought.
She didn’t reply, instead picking up the soup beside her and taking a small sip. It was quite good, so she took two more sips.
Zachary sat down next to her, pressing, "How did you know?"
"Why? You want to know so you can be more careful next time?" Nina asked with a cold smile.
Zachary propped his chin on his hand, his gaze fixed on her. "Nina, you’re not secretly gathering evidence to sue for divorce, are you?"
Nina’s brow furrowed involuntarily. "If you’re suspicious, you can investigate. You don’t have to ask me."
"It’s just that you’re a little too perceptive. It was indeed Luna Sterling just now. She called me last night too, saying she was in pain, but I didn’t go." After he spoke, he stared intently at Nina.
Nina knew he was waiting for her to praise him.
"She’s in pain, so she calls you, and the pain just goes away? Since when did you become an anesthesiologist?" Nina asked coolly while sipping her soup.
Zachary couldn’t help but laugh out loud. "Are you telling a joke?"
Nina couldn’t be bothered to reply.
Luna Sterling paid lip service to being sorry and feeling guilty toward her.
But as soon as night fell, she would call Zachary. Her words and her actions were two completely different things.
"Alright, I’m going to go check on her," Zachary said, standing up and reaching out to stroke her hair.
Nina forced herself not to care, but she couldn’t stop the words from tumbling out. "What if I asked you not to go?"
"She hurt her hand while taking you out to relax. You don’t like her and don’t want to go, so I’ll go in your place. Stop making a scene. Be good." With that, Zachary walked toward the entryway without a second glance back.
Nina knew it.
What was the use of asking him to stay? Zachary had a million excuses.
She suddenly felt like such a fool for actually taking what he said last night seriously.
Just as Zachary reached the entryway, he turned to glance at her, then finally walked back. He leaned down and kissed her cheek. "I’m just going to check on her, don’t overthink it. We can only ever be friends, nothing more."
Nina’s hand, holding the spoon, tightened unconsciously.
’Really just friends? Then what about the child in her belly?’
’If she didn’t say anything, Zachary would just take her for a fool and plan to hide it until the end of time.’
A heavy feeling settled in Nina’s chest, and she lost her appetite for breakfast.
Seeing her sullen, silent face, Zachary continued to coax her in a low voice, "Nina, once she’s recovered, I’ll stop taking her calls and have nothing more to do with her. How about that?"
"Forget it. If you want to go, then go. I’m in no position to tell you who you can be friends with," Nina said, her tone indifferent.
Right now, she was a lot like Zachary—just taking things one step at a time.
Zachary stood up and stroked her hair. "If you don’t like it, I’ll just see her less once she’s better. Okay?"
’If he had said that earlier,’ Nina thought, ’I wouldn’t have fallen into such despair. I wouldn’t be at the point where I have zero expectations of him.’
"Go on, do what you need to do. I’m going to eat my breakfast," Nina said evenly.
A flicker of disappointment rose in Zachary’s heart, but he quickly returned to normal. With a hint of displeasure in his voice, he asked, "You’re not responding. Are you still thinking about divorcing me?" 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖
"If you really cared about me, even a little, you’d consider the divorce I mentioned. I wasn’t joking. From the moment I said it, my mind was made up," Nina replied coolly.
