###Chapter 55: They’re After Her
The owner of the resort was Adrian Pemberton’s grandfather.
Nina Wainwright reasonably suspected that the guest who found a bug in their food was either Caleb Ford or Talia Talbot.
"A bug in the food?" A look of disgust crossed Zachary Hawthorne’s face as he took Nina Wainwright’s hand. "Don’t go. I’ll have Silas Sinclair bring breakfast to us."
Nina wanted to find out what was happening, but she couldn’t show it in front of Zachary. She could only murmur her assent and follow him back to the room.
After Zachary Hawthorne messaged Silas Sinclair, he tossed his phone onto the bed. Just as he was about to suggest to Nina that they go somewhere else, there was a knock at the door.
Nina didn’t move.
Zachary walked over and opened the door, a look of impatience on his face.
When he saw it was Luna Sterling, he immediately composed himself and asked calmly, "What’s wrong?"
"Caleb Ford is arguing with someone. You should come. The other party is an old man, and he’s refusing to admit there was a bug in the breakfast. Caleb is furious... I’m afraid something might happen." As Luna Sterling spoke, she glanced at Nina, who was walking over. "What’s more, the old man is Dr. Pemberton’s grandfather, and Dr. Pemberton is Miss Wainwright’s friend... This is a tricky situation."
Zachary turned his head, his gaze unreadable as he asked Nina, "Do you want to go see?"
Nina knew full well whether there was a bug in the food or not; it would be useless for her to go. She had been staying here for two days and hadn’t seen a single issue with the food. The fact that a problem arose the moment Caleb Ford and his group arrived made it hard for her not to suspect they were targeting an old man just to get at her.
They were just that vile.
They would do anything, as long as it disgusted her.
A rich young master like Caleb Ford wouldn’t even consider how serious a food safety issue like this was for a resort.
Of course, this was all just her speculation for now.
"My going won’t solve the problem," Nina replied, turning to sit back down on the window seat.
"It’s still good to go take a look." A smile touched Zachary’s lips as he turned, walked back to her side, and took her hand.
Nina was forcefully dragged to Caleb Ford’s room.
Luna Sterling stood to the side, watching with a frown.
Talia Talbot was holding Caleb Ford back, but he was still cursing, "I found it in the food you served me! You’re saying I caught a fly and put it in there myself? Why don’t you try catching one and show me how!"
Grandpa Pemberton had a fiery temper as well. He retorted, "Fine, call the police! You think this resort doesn’t have security cameras? Go on, call them! Let the police pull the footage and see where you were this morning."
Nina glanced at the breakfast on the table and saw that it wasn’t a fly at all, but a small bee...
"I don’t need to call the police. I’ve already recorded a video. Once I leave, I’ll post it online and let everyone judge." Caleb Ford tilted his head back, his attitude brazenly self-righteous. "I’m going to ruin your resort’s reputation. What about it? Go on, call the police."
Just as Grandpa Pemberton was about to say more, Nina quickly stepped forward to stop him. "How much is the bowl of noodles? Grandpa, just compensate him."
Caleb Ford’s family was rich. If he had a video, he would definitely pay to boost its traffic. Soon, the video would be everywhere, the resort’s reputation would be destroyed, and no more guests would come.
Nina understood all too well the destructive power of online rumors these days.
Grandpa Pemberton looked at her. "Tell me, how can this young man be so unreasonable? He grabs a bee and calls it a fly. It’s hard to even find bees this time of year... Isn’t he just blatantly bullying me?"
"Grandpa..." Nina said in a low voice, signaling him with her eyes to stop talking.
’Adrian Pemberton’s hand was injured, and they couldn’t even find out who did it.’
Nina was well aware that Caleb Ford was deliberately framing the resort simply because he had a problem with her.
Seeing how protective she was of Grandpa Pemberton, Zachary Hawthorne stepped forward. He glanced at the noodles in the bowl and said in a cold voice, "Is compensating for one bowl of noodles enough? This is a resort halfway up a mountain, with mountains in front and water behind. It’s normal for a bee or two to fly in."
He took a closer look. "The bee is cooked."
This meant the bee had been in the pot.
Nina suppressed the fury inside her, but she still asked, "Then what do you want?"
"Call the health department, of course. Have them come inspect the sanitary conditions here. If it doesn’t pass, it should be shut down for rectification," Zachary said coolly.
Nina took a deep breath.
Grandpa Pemberton stared at him for a moment before speaking. "Then go ahead and make the call."
A slow smile crept onto Caleb Ford’s lips. "I gave you a chance just now. I said an apology and two hundred yuan would be enough, but you just had to take it this far."
Seeing his expression, Nina immediately went to Zachary’s side and grabbed his hand. "Is this really necessary?"
"What’s wrong? Are you afraid we’ve bribed the health department?" Zachary looked at her coldly.
A tightness seized Nina’s chest.
"Make the call," Zachary said to Caleb, his eyes on Nina’s pale face. 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Caleb Ford immediately made the call.
’If they pursue this, the health department definitely won’t use their usual standards. Besides, they were just looking for trouble in the first place... If it weren’t for me, Grandpa Pemberton’s resort wouldn’t be facing this.’
She was overwhelmed with sadness and a sense of utter powerlessness against these wealthy people who could do whatever they pleased.
"Then go ahead and call someone. I’m not feeling well," Nina said, turning to leave.
"Aren’t you close with Adrian Pemberton? What’s the matter, you feel like we’re bullying his grandfather? You should stay here and wait for the results. You can’t be unfair about me finding a bug in my food just because you hate me. I’m the victim here," Caleb’s voice dripped with sarcasm.
Luna Sterling looked at Nina with a worried expression.
Nina turned to face Caleb. "Everyone here knows who the real victim is. Do you think we’ll just take your word for it?"
"What are you trying to say?" Talia Talbot immediately stepped forward to defend Caleb. "Are you implying that Caleb is slandering an old man?"
"I didn’t mean that," Nina replied calmly.
"Isn’t that exactly what you meant?! Oh, and speaking of which, you haven’t told the old man that Adrian Pemberton’s hand is injured and he can’t hold a scalpel anymore, have you? Why not? Afraid to say it? Could it have something to do with you?" Talia asked mockingly, an eyebrow raised.
"What are you talking about?" Grandpa Pemberton immediately asked.
Talia Talbot quickly took two steps back, feigning an apologetic look. "Oh, I’m so sorry. I got carried away in the heat of the argument. An old man like you shouldn’t have to hear such terrible news."
"Nina, tell me, is what she said true?!" Grandpa Pemberton’s voice rose, his chest heaving.
Nina understood now. They had caused this whole scene just to lure her over and reveal Adrian’s injury.
It wasn’t enough to just cause harm; they had to be cruel and twist the knife.
"Adrian Pemberton’s hand was indeed injured..." Nina said.
"To the point that he can’t hold a scalpel anymore," Talia Talbot emphasized.
With tears welling in her eyes, Nina stared at her. "That’s enough!"
