### Chapter 46: Possible Pregnancy
"Are you that reluctant to stay and take care of me?" Zachary Hawthorne’s eyes locked onto her, an arctic chill within them.
Nina Wainwright sighed. "No matter how I explain it, you’re always like this. You’re exhausting me."
"If you’re so exhausted, then don’t come! Do you think no one else can take care of me if you’re not here?!" Zachary snapped impatiently.
Nina didn’t leave. Instead, she sat on the edge of the bed and stared blankly out the window.
Zachary turned away, ignoring her.
His head was injured, too. After venting his anger at Nina, it started throbbing.
A moment later, he lay back down and immediately fell asleep.
As Nina sat beside him, she soon felt drowsy as well. She felt exceptionally tired today, and a cramp was starting in her lower abdomen again.
Just then, her cell phone rang.
Worried about disturbing Zachary, Nina immediately got up and stepped outside the hospital room. She answered the call. "Teacher, what is it?"
Come to think of it, Sandra Walsh hadn’t called her in a long time.
"Nina, I’m in a difficult situation, and I’m afraid you’re the only one who can help," Sandra Walsh’s voice was filled with worry.
"What’s the matter?" Nina asked, though she already had a feeling she knew. ’It’s probably about dancing, but Zach will never agree.’
"My lead dancer was injured at the last minute. We promised a TV station we’d do a Mid-Autumn Festival program, and without her, we can’t deliver. Could you talk to Mr. Hawthorne? We just need to borrow you for a month, only two hours of rehearsal a day." Sandra Walsh’s tone was pleading.
Nina really wanted to go.
’A TV program... The lead dancer is always center stage. As long as you dance well, it’s easy to make a name for yourself.’
"I’ll ask him." She decided to give it a try anyway.
’Two hours a day isn’t that long. Besides... it’s for a TV station, not some ordinary training class.’
"I’m sorry to trouble you, then. I only thought of you because I truly had no other options," Sandra Walsh said, her voice apologetic.
"It’s okay. I’m happy that you thought of me, Teacher," Nina said in a low voice.
Sandra Walsh sighed. Just as she was about to ask about Nina’s situation with Zachary, Nina’s phone was suddenly knocked out of her hand.
With a sharp CLACK, the phone hit the ground, and the call was immediately disconnected.
Nina looked at the baby-faced man who had slapped her phone away and frowned. "What the hell do you want?!"
"Me? I didn’t do anything. My hand slipped, sorry about that." The baby-faced man gave a malicious smile, turned to walk around her, and deliberately stepped on her phone.
After stepping on it, he looked down and said with a mock-apologetic expression, "Oops, my bad. I’m nearsighted and didn’t see your phone there. You should pick it up and wipe it off. It’s probably not broken, right? If it is, come to Luna’s room tomorrow—"
SLAP!
Before he could finish, Nina had slapped him across the face.
’Does he really think I’m a pushover just because I have a gentle personality?’
The baby-faced man froze for a second, then immediately grabbed Nina by the collar, about to slap her back. Just then, Silas Sinclair, who had gone to buy sanitary pads, returned and shouted, "Caleb Ford! What are you doing!"
The next second, Silas pulled Nina behind him, shielding her.
Nina knelt to pick up her phone, but the man named Caleb Ford shoved her hard on the shoulder.
She fell, landing hard on the ground.
A sharp, dragging pain shot through Nina’s lower abdomen. She instinctively clutched her stomach... and her phone fell to the ground again.
Silas saw the color drain from her face and immediately knelt to help her. "What’s wrong?"
"My abdomen hurts..." Nina’s face was pale.
Silas knew she was on her period. He helped her up at once and turned to Caleb. "If you lay another hand on her, Mr. Hawthorne will deal with you!"
"I laid a hand on her? She’s the one who hit me! Didn’t you see this slap mark on my face?!" Caleb Ford’s eyes widened in fury.
’In his eyes, Nina was just a worthless bitch. A woman like that should tuck her tail between her legs when she sees a rich man like him. How dare she use her connection to Zach to slap him?!’
Silas couldn’t be bothered to argue with him.
He helped Nina back into the room.
Nina’s lower abdomen was hurting badly.
Because of the sedative effects of his medication, Zachary hadn’t woken up despite all the commotion outside the room.
Seeing Nina clutching her lower abdomen, Silas said, "I’ll get a doctor to check on you."
"Give them to me." Nina could feel that she was bleeding rather quickly.
’She didn’t know if it was because she had taken too many birth control pills, but her period pains this time were especially severe, and the bleeding was heavy.’
Nina went into the bathroom.
Only then did Silas turn to Caleb. "The hospital corridors have security cameras. You know what you did. She’s always been good-natured. She wouldn’t have hit you if you hadn’t been bullying her!"
"What’s the matter, feeling sorry for her? Feeling a pang of sympathy seeing her so pathetic? But what about Luna? Who knows how much pain Luna was in during her most difficult time, when she heard this woman had slept her way into marrying Zach? She’s been depressed for the past three years, been on medication for so long, and nearly died several times!" Caleb roared.
"Keep your voice down!" Silas hissed, glancing at Zachary on the bed.
"You have no idea how much Luna has suffered because of him! That’s why you sympathize with this opportunistic bitch!" Caleb continued to curse.
"Who are you cursing?" Zachary said suddenly.
Caleb jumped, startled, and immediately turned to look at him. "Zach."
"Who gave you permission to talk about her affairs here?" A chilling coldness glinted in Zachary’s eyes.
Caleb pressed his lips together and said nothing more.
Just then, the bathroom door opened, and Nina walked out, her face pale. She spoke weakly to Zachary, "I’m not feeling well... Have Silas take care of you tonight."
After saying that, she walked weakly toward the exit.
Zachary noticed a spot of blood on the hem of her clothes and said, "Nina, get yourself checked out here at the hospital."
He was well aware that Nina had taken a lot of birth control pills, which were extremely damaging to one’s health. That was why she sometimes suffered terribly during her period.
"There’s no need," Nina said with a frown.
She left the room. As she turned, her vision went black, and she nearly fainted.
A hand caught her.
Adrian Pemberton, who happened to be passing by, saw how terribly pale she was and said with concern, "What’s wrong? You don’t look well."
"Help me to the OB/GYN department. I need to get checked." When Nina was in the bathroom and saw that the bleeding wouldn’t stop, coupled with the severe abdominal pain, she realized that it might not be an irregular period—she might be pregnant.
The last time Zachary had humiliated her in the car, he hadn’t used any protection.
Adrian Pemberton’s eyes flickered, and his hand trembled slightly. He pressed his lips together tightly, a profound sadness welling up in his eyes, but he quickly concealed it. "Alright..."
The two of them went to the Obstetrics and Gynecology department.
Adrian sat outside, waiting.
He lowered his gaze, looking at his own hands. After a long moment, he gave a self-deprecating laugh.
’He knew he never stood a chance, but hearing that she might actually be pregnant... he still couldn’t accept it.’*****
