The gray patch on the fallen Sentinel’s arm shrank back on its own the moment Reid spoke, corruption retreating like something had simply decided the demonstration was over, color rushing back into the man’s skin without a single additional pulse of light from the fake Julian’s hands.
"he’s healing," someone in the crowd murmured, relieved, and the tension that had been building around Reid’s accusation dissolved almost instantly, uncertain murmurs shifting back into cautious approval.
The Emperor’s jaw tightened, eyes narrowing at the suspiciously convenient timing, but there was nothing left to point to now, no visible proof, nothing but a feeling neither he nor Reid could act on in front of a hall full of witnesses.
"rest," the Emperor said finally, voice clipped, and the fake Julian was led away, careful and unhurried, leaving both Reid and the Emperor standing in the wreckage of a suspicion they couldn’t yet prove.
"that recovery was too clean," Reid muttered once the crowd had thinned. "corruption doesn’t just retreat on its own."
"no," the Emperor agreed quietly. "it doesn’t. someone pulled it back deliberately. which means someone out there is still controlling whatever that thing is, and controlling it well enough to cover its mistakes in real time."
Mika, deflated at the sudden recovery, muttered something sour under his breath and slunk off with his friends trailing behind him, already looking for someone else to complain to.
---
Julian didn’t know any of that had happened. All he knew was the mark on his neck had burned hot and strange an hour ago, then gone cold and quiet again just as fast, and now he sat curled against the wall of his room with the fox pressed close beside him, furious in a way that had nowhere left to go.
"I hate this," Julian said, voice low and rough, fists clenched tight against his knees. "I hate this place, I hate him, I hate that I died once already and apparently that wasn’t enough, apparently the universe looked at everything I went through and thought, you know what this guy needs? more. more monsters. more crowns. more psychopaths who think ’no’ is just a suggestion."
"I don’t blame you for being angry," the fox said quietly, no longer bothering with its old formal phrasing, just speaking plain and steady beside him. "you’ve earned the right to be furious."
"I’m not surrendering," Julian said, jaw tight. "I don’t care how many warnings the System gives me. I don’t care what happens if I push too hard. I refuse to just sit here and let him win by doing nothing."
"I know," the fox said. "I’m not asking you to surrender. I’m just asking you to stay alive long enough to actually win. those aren’t the same thing, even if they feel like it right now."
Julian let out a long, exhausted breath, some of the fire in his chest cooling into something colder and more tired instead. "yeah," he muttered. "yeah, okay. I hear you."
He leaned his head back against the wall, staring up at a ceiling that wasn’t his, in a room that wasn’t his, in a life that felt less and less like anything he’d ever agreed to live. Three years of holding a gate shut with his bare hands, and somehow this... waiting, cornered, powerless in a way he’d never let himself be even at his weakest... felt worse than any single night on that wall ever had.
"I keep thinking there has to be a way out I haven’t found yet," Julian said quietly. "some angle. some weakness. something."
"we’ll keep looking," the fox said. "we haven’t run out of options. we’ve just run out of easy ones."
The door opened without warning. Xavier stepped inside, unhurried as always, closing it behind him with a soft, deliberate click, gaze sweeping the room before settling on Julian with that same patient, possessive interest, like he’d walked in expecting to find exactly this... Julian tired, worn thin, still defiant despite everything.
"do you like it here," Xavier asked, voice mild, almost conversational, like he was asking about the weather instead of the room he’d trapped Julian in for over a week now.
Julian looked up at him, exhaustion burning away into something sharper. "I’d rather set myself on fire."
Something flickered behind Xavier’s eyes at that, amusement thin over something colder underneath. "still fighting," he said. "still charming, even now. it’s one of the things I like most about you, if I’m honest."
"good thing I don’t care what you like," Julian said.
"you know," Xavier said, stepping closer, voice dropping lower, losing some of its usual practiced patience, "I’ve been remarkably restrained with you. more than you realize. more than you deserve, given how little gratitude you’ve shown for any of it."
"gratitude," Julian repeated, disbelief sharpening his voice, pushing himself up off the floor to meet him properly instead of staying small against the wall. "for what. kidnapping me? poisoning me? marking me like I’m property? forgive me if I don’t send a thank-you card."
"I gave you a place where nothing could touch you," Xavier said, something raw cracking briefly through his composure. "no crown scheming for your bloodline. no prince using you for politics. no commander who’ll eventually put duty above whatever he feels for you. just me. and you’d rather spend every hour of it hating me instead of even considering..."
"considering what," Julian cut in, voice hard. "that you’re somehow better than the people who at least ask before they try to claim me? you don’t get points for kidnapping me more politely than an Emperor."
Something in Xavier’s face went tight, the last of his patience finally cracking visibly across his features, something dark and possessive surging up underneath the calm he usually wore so carefully. "you keep testing exactly how far you can push me," he said, voice low and hard now. "I’d stop, if I were you."
"or what," Julian snapped, refusing to back down even as every instinct screamed at him to. "you’ll drag me somewhere worse? mark me somewhere else? I’m running out of things you can actually threaten me with, Xavier."
Something in Xavier’s face went cold and final. "you asked for it," he said quietly.
Before Julian could process what that meant, Xavier crossed the remaining distance in a single fast, furious stride, catching Julian by the shoulders and pinning him hard against the wall, the breath knocked clean out of his lungs, the sudden violence of it leaving no room to brace.
"Xavier..." Julian started, fury and sudden alarm colliding, hands already coming up to shove him back.
He didn’t get the chance to finish the word. Xavier’s mouth crashed against his, hard and possessive, cutting off everything Julian might have thrown at him, and for one frozen, furious second Julian’s whole body went rigid with shock, mind blanking out entirely except for the roar of *no, no, not like this* screaming through every nerve he had.
Julian shoved him back with everything he had, hard enough that Xavier actually staggered a step, and the second there was space between them Julian’s fist connected with his jaw, wild and furious and shaking.
"don’t you EVER," Julian snarled, chest heaving, backing away fast until his shoulder blades hit the far wall, putting every inch of distance the small room allowed between them, "do that again."
Xavier straightened slowly, wiping at the corner of his mouth, something unreadable flickering behind his eyes... not quite anger, not quite regret, something colder and more calculating settling in underneath whatever had driven him to it in the first place.
"noted," he said quietly, voice flat now, all the earlier warmth gone from it entirely.
He turned and left without another word, the door sealing shut behind him, and Julian stood there shaking, furious and shaken and sick to his stomach all at once, the fox pressed frantic and small against his ankle.
"I’m sorry," the fox said, voice tight with something close to helpless fury of its own. "I couldn’t stop that. I couldn’t do anything..."
"it’s not your fault," Julian said, voice rough, sliding down the wall until he was sitting again, arms wrapped tight around his knees. "it’s not... I’m fine. I’m fine."
He wasn’t, not really, but saying it out loud felt like the only thing keeping the shaking in his hands from turning into something worse.
"we need a way out," Julian said finally, voice hardening even through the tremor still running under it. "now. today. I’m not staying here one more day longer than I have to."
