Julian stared up at the Emperor, chin still faintly warm where those fingers had gripped him a second ago, and his mind was racing to catch up with whatever had just shifted in the room.
The Emperor released his chin and straightened back up, folding his hands behind his back, that same faint almost-smile still sitting on his mouth. "here is my offer, Guide Valerian," he said, voice smooth and unhurried, like he already knew exactly how this conversation was going to end. "become my bride."
The room went dead silent. Julian blinked. "...excuse me WHAT?"
"you heard me," the Emperor said. "the Empire’s first SSS-Rank Guide, bound not to a Sentinel, not to a border command, not to some minor noble family’s scheming, but to the throne itself. as my bride. it’s a generous offer. I don’t extend it lightly."
Reid’s jaw tightened so hard Julian could see the muscle from across the room. Jayden, standing frozen near the doorway, looked like someone had just hit him over the head with something heavy.
[Host. Heart rate rising. Recommend calm response.]
’calm response, sure, let me just find one of those lying around somewhere...’
Julian pulled himself straighter against the pillows, forcing steel into his voice even as exhaustion pulled at every part of him. "no," he said flatly.
The Emperor’s eyebrow rose slightly, like the word genuinely hadn’t occurred to him as a possibility. "no."
"no," Julian repeated. "absolutely not. not now, not later, not if you were the last available option in this entire empire. I got engaged and dumped in the same conversation this morning, I fought actual zombies a few hours ago, I nearly died from using every drop of power I had, and now you’re standing in my recovery room asking me to marry you like that’s a completely normal follow-up. it’s not. the answer is no."
"you refused my cousin more gently," the Emperor observed, something sharp and curious flickering behind his composed expression.
"your cousin at least asked instead of announcing," Julian said. "you walked in, grabbed my face, and told me to marry you like you were reading off a grocery list. so if you want to compare how gently I said no, congratulations, you rank lower. much lower."
Jayden made a strangled sound near the door that might have been a laugh he was desperately trying to swallow. Reid’s mouth twitched, just barely, before he smoothed it back into something neutral.
The Emperor, for his part, didn’t look offended so much as genuinely thrown, an expression Julian suspected didn’t cross his face often. "you understand," he said slowly, "that I do not make this offer twice."
"good because I don’t give a damn," Julian said. "saves us both the trouble of me saying no a second time."
Something flickered behind the Emperor’s eyes then, and for just a moment his composed mask slipped, something older and more private passing across his face before he caught it and smoothed it away again.
’what wrong with him now,’ the Emperor thought, studying Julian with a faint frown he didn’t let reach his mouth. ’at first he begged me not to let him leave the academy. now he refuses me just like that, without a second thought.’
He looked at Julian again, longer this time, something calculating settling behind his eyes.
’or was it because he became the Empire’s first SSS-Rank Guide. does he think himself above me now.’
Julian, unaware of the exact shape of whatever thought was turning behind the Emperor’s expression, just held his ground, arms crossed despite the ache still sitting deep in his bones.
The Emperor’s mouth curved slowly into something small and private, not quite a smile, something colder underneath it.
’Julian. whatever you do,’ he thought, eyes lingering on him a moment longer than politeness required, ’I will still have you. no matter what.’
Then the smile widened, just slightly, into something that made the temperature in the room feel like it dropped a few degrees.
The fox, still pressed close against Julian’s side, went rigid, every one of its nine tails standing straight up, ears flat against its skull.
"host," it said, voice dropping low and urgent, meant only for Julian’s ears. "I don’t like that smile. that is a very bad smile. that is the smile of someone who has already decided your no doesn’t actually matter."
’yeah,’ Julian thought, watching the Emperor’s expression settle into something far too pleased for a man who’d just been flatly rejected. ’I’m getting that feeling too.’
"very well," the Emperor said out loud, voice smooth again, all trace of that colder undercurrent tucked neatly away. "I’ll leave you to your recovery, Guide Valerian." He turned toward the door, unhurried, every movement deliberate. "we’ll speak again soon."
"I said no," Julian called after him.
The Emperor paused at the doorway, glancing back over his shoulder, that same small, unsettling smile still in place.
"I heard you," he said. "I simply don’t think it changes anything."
And with that, he was gone, the door clicking shut softly behind him, leaving the room in a silence so heavy even Jayden didn’t seem to know what to say first.
